Description

Branch 251 takes you to the heart of the world’s first criminal trial dealing with atrocity crimes committed by Syrian officials. Now also in Arabic!

Prosecutors in the German city of Koblenz accuse two alleged henchmen of the Syrian government of crimes against humanity committed at ‘Branch 251’ detention center near Damascus.

Branch 251 gives you a biweekly update on the trial. With portraits of the main protagonists. Commentary, analysis, and testimony from the courtroom. Especially from victims and their families looking for justice. But will a German court in a city few people have heard of be able to deliver? Or are there too many obstacles looming on the horizon?

We’re back today for a short but important update: The German Federal Court rejected Eyad A.’s appeal arguments following his conviction in February 2021. In this bonus episode, Fritz summarizes the appeals court’s decision and relates it to the wider significance of the Al-Khatib Trial. What does the decision mean for Eyad A. himself, and the time he will still have to spend in prison? And what does it mean for the overall struggle for justice and accountability for Syria, especially in these times of the so-called ‘normalization’ of the Assad regime? It's here. The verdict in the case of Anwar R. It took almost two years and more than 100 hearings with 80 witnesses who appeared in court. The worldwide first criminal trial against former Syrian regime officials was long and complex, with ups and downs, praise and criticism. And at the end of all this, Anwar R. was handed a life sentence for his co-perpetration of murder, torture, sexualized violence and rape, and severe deprivation of liberty as a crime against humanity.  In today’s final episode of this podcast we take you along on our last trip to Koblenz, to the courtroom, to the judgment. We want to thank everyone who spoke to us in Koblenz, and everyone who has spoken to us throughout the production of this podcast. Sometimes, people without a German passport end up behind bars in Germany. But depending on their status, their punishment doesn't end as they walk out of prison. In this episode, Fritz and Naya explore how free ex-convicts without a passport really are. And with the help of Thomas Oberhäuser, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Working Group on Migration Law in the German Bar Association, we discuss what could happen to Anwar R. and Eyad A. if they were indeed finally convicted for what they are accused of: crimes against humanity. For more information and regular updates on the trial, follow us on Twitter.More on Thomas OberhäuserThe Bar Association Thomas Oberhäuser chairsECCHR trial reportsSyria Justice and Accountability Centre's monitoring of the trialLogo design by laurenshebly.nl -- Photo by James Lawler Duggan/AFP/Getty Images.Music by Kevin McLeod and via Blue Dot SessionsSupport for our podcast comes from German Federal Foreign Office funds that are provided by the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen IFA's zivik Funding Programme.

When you think of dictatorial regimes, you might think of state-controlled media, or of the army on the side of the state- but what about the healthcare sector? Do they side with the regime? And what does that even look like? Since the uprising in Syria began, regime-aligned doctors have played a powerful role within Assad's torture apparatus. In this episode, we're taking a first look at the darker side of medicine within the context of war-torn Syria. In this court update, Hannah and Fritz discuss the most recent testimonies, the court's puzzling decision to block the recording of the final pleas as well as a motion to label the charge of enforced disappearance as a crime against humanity. Like many times before, the seemingly dry, bureaucratic legal questions that the Koblenz court grapples with during this trial, raise fundamental questions about international law, universal jurisdiction and justice itself. In this episode, we’ll be talking about how power, security and fear interrelate and co-produce militarized cityscapes, or security cities. In particular, we will talk about Syria, the kingdom of silence, where walls have ears, and buildings have eyes, and everyone looks around them before talking. Cities where everyone is being watched and considered as a threat to be eliminated if they tried to speak up and reclaim their rights against those in power.
