Autism Spectrum Recovery | Team ConnectionsThere are things known and there are things unknown, and in between are the doors of perception. ~ Aldous HuxleyBuilding The Autism Spectrum Team To Manage Recovery VariablesDr. Debra Moore is a retired psychologist who now devotes her time to writing and sharing information on understanding, treating and managing autism. Years ago she founded and directed a psychotherapy center in Sacramento, California where she taught and mentored therapists in training to manage autism spectrum challenges.Remember to always think in autism spectrum terminology to honor the deeper, evolving understanding of the multiplicity of underlying factors discussed by many experts here at CBJ listed below. [We’ll add more on this page as they report findings here.]Debra As An Autism Spectrum ResourceOver the years she developed a specialty in autism spectrum disorders and following retirement from direct clinical work coauthored The Loving Push – How Parents and Professionals Can Help Spectrum Kids Become Successful Adults, with Dr. Temple Grandin, an internationally acclaimed expert who herself has suffered from ASD – Autism Spectrum Disorder – challenges. Now living in Washington, DC, Debra contributors to Autism Parenting Magazine and Autism Asperger’s Digest, facilitates LinkedIn Groups Autism Spectrum Across the Lifespan, and Autism HELPING HANDS Mentors and contributed chapters to The Nine Degrees of Autism and Internet Addiction in Children and Adolescents. Debra’s insightful comments here at CBJ/153, about ABA – Applied Behavior Analysis – and team play in work with ASD individuals, provide a helpful perspective even for the most informed parents and therapists.Dr. Moore’s Website & Book:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/drdebramoore/The Loving Push – How Parents and Professionals Can Help Spectrum Kids Become Successful Adults by Moore & Grandin – Amazon Global Link – Yes, Temple Grandin———-Recommended Training Programs For Both Professionals and The PublicParents & Public – Autism Global Summit – Experts Discuss Multiple Treatment Details:  http://corebrainjournal.com/autismglobalsummitProfessionals – Autism Recovery Training – Dr. Kurt Woeller & International Experts: http://corepsych.com/autism————-It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see. ~ Henry David Thoreau————-My Contribution to The Autism Global Summit– Please take a moment to Like and Leave a...
Boredom As An Important Marker For ActionParadoxically, without self-control you can’t be free. – Russell A BarkleyMeasure Brain Function To Improve Outcomes – Boredom Matters  Jeff Copper is an ADHD Coach and national thought leader who likes to use obstacles as teaching tools. He likes to measure. Here he measures, yes, boredom. At first, boredom looks like it’s obvious, but Jeff takes this interesting boredom discussion to a different level.Jeff is, quite simply, a man for all seasons, as he reflects, reports, and recommends on the remarkable changes in “ADHD” – Executive Function – mind science. His international reputation for asking important questions, for providing an interesting forum to discuss the vagaries of ADD/ADHD diagnosis and treatment, is nothing less than exemplary – especially in these halcyon years of ADHD medication confusion, public distrust, and pervasive medical quandary. It’s dicey out there, and Jeff sets out to correct the guessing game with details that work.Photo by Maxim Smith on UnsplashStraight Talk: Thinking About Boredom & FunctionDon’t forget, if the targets and treatments remain imprecise who can blame the public for a pervasive lack of confidence in the ADHD treatment system? The good news, label guesswork is out [hyperactive vs inattentive??], and detailed, functional measurement, both brain and biomedical, is now more decidedly, irrevocably in.No, I’m not diving into the deep waters of controversy over functional vs traditional medicine. The function I’m addressing here at CBJ is at once complex and simple: brain function and biomedical function from a comprehensive medical perspective are increasingly translatable, understandable, and applicable down at the street level.PerspectiveMy perspective remains the same: Comprehensive perceptions are inclusive, not polarized in either of the warring medical camps [traditional or functional] and are in the best interest of the most advanced, most precise, most predictable patient care.Let’s get past binary thinking – it’s boring. The good thing about science is that it’s true whether or not you believe in it. ~ Neil deGrasse TysonJeff’s Outstanding ContributionIn just a few short years Jeff has interviewed almost everyone in the ADHD community from thought leaders such as Hallowell and Barkley to the living experiences of coaches and clients. He connects researchers with Main Street experiences, always chasing data that works in the real world. We’re on the same Path.Ed Note: On My Good Times With JeffAt first, Jeff and I simply bumped into each other at various meetings, from CHADD to the National ADHD Coaches Organization. I still remember very well how much we both appreciated Dr. Russell Barkley’s remarks years ago when Russ added Brain Executive Function insights to the previous appearance-based diagnostic criteria still used as the standard of care today. We all know that ‘Hyperactive,’ ‘Inattentive,’ and ‘Combined,’ simply don’t cover the complexity of executive function challenges. Brain function measures mark the essential...
Dissociative Identity Disorder – Fusion Through ‘As If’Unexpressed emotions will never die. They are buried alive and will come forth later in uglier ways. ~ Signund FreudDr. Earl W. Flora provides therapy in Williamsburg, VA, for all ages with a wide range of individual mental health issues, family, work, and related issues. His specialty is treating Dissociative Identity Disorder, and here he adds this interesting perspective to reintegration/fusion.Along with a full range of psychological issues, Dr. Flora utilizes a well-publicized but seldom used a single sentence to quickly assess & identify DID clients. In addition, he has developed an abbreviated technique for working with clients suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder by avoiding the use of abreaction to bring the personas together, without forcing them to relive the negative effects of the event that caused their separation in the first place. It’s about time… time to recover.Only after spending 27 years developing and validating the technique has he published his book titled Then They Were One – Fusion Without Abreaction, in which he describes his technique in great detail. Additional DetailsSince you’re interested here do listen to the two ART – Accelerated Resolution Therapy – Interviews below as they bring together additional practice recommendations/applications.Photo by Riccardo Annandale on Unsplash————Book and Additional ReferencesWebsite: https://ewfasifnow.com/Book: Then They Were “ONE” Fusion Without Abreaction: Via The “AS IF” Technique In 60 Seconds Or Less An Innovative Approach To The Diagnosis Of Dissociative Identity Disorder – 2015 – Flora – Global Amazon Link Endorsed by Beverly Searle, a Guest at CBJ/165 noted below: “For us working in the field to have more tools to add to our therapy practice so as we can assist in the healing of these people who have had tremendous abuse in childhood is greatly needed.”————CBJ Expert Insights On Dissociative Identity Disorder & Similar InterventionsAnorexia, Dissociation & Depression Revisited – Searle – http://corebrainjournal.com/157Dissociative Identity Disorder Update – Searle – http://corebrainjournal.com/165EMDR for DID – Lobenstine – https://corebrainjournal.com/166Dissociative Identity Disorder – Client Reports – Davis – http://corebrainjournal.com/144Sexual Healing After Childhood Trauma – Carson – http://corebrainjournal.com/219Accelerated Resolution Therapy – ART – Kip – http://corebrainjournal.com/201Accelerated Resolution Therapy – More Options – Breeding –
Testing For Mycotoxins From Mold At Any AgeDr. Kurt Woeller has been a biomedical autism specialist since 1998, and in this interesting CBJ Episode, he clarifies the multiple benefits and indications for Mold awareness and Testing for Mycotoxins. This is the second CBJ guest interview with Dr. Woeller after his excellent first discussion regarding biomedical measurement strategies for Autism and Treatment Failure, linked here: CBJ/140 – and this is a republication of his earlier CBJ/192 Mycotoxins interview. As an original Defeat Autism Now! (DAN!) referral physician, he has years of experience in researching and implementing advanced biomedical interventions for individuals with autism. ADHD Kids: Challenges With The Law  While the CDC estimates that ADHD occurs in 10% of the general population, its prevalence in our jails has been estimated at 50% or higher. Additionally, in about 65% of cases, ADHD is present with a co-occurring mental health condition. Studies also show that inmates with related mental health conditions stay in the system between 5 and 8 times longer than inmates without mental health impairments. This is further compounded by the fact that the risk of substance abuse disorder doubles when ADHD is present and further triples when ADHD is present with Conduct Disorder. ~ Robert TudiscoRobert Tudisco – A Lawyer Experienced With ADHD Kids Here Robert takes on many imperatives that surround ADHD children with legal issues – and gives us hard, straight answers. Consider this essential perspective: children and adolescents with ADHD & co-occurring conditions experience a much higher risk of school discipline & criminal prosecution.Robert is a nationally recognized author, motivational speaker, and non-profit management consultant, in addition to being a practicing attorney at the law firm of Barger & Gaines, in Irvington NY.My firm recommendation for those interested in ADHD kids and the law: This mandatory listen to lawyerHe is a past member of the National Board of Directors of Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Disorder (CHADD), serving as a member of its Public Policy Committee since 2003, and as Committee Chair from 2005 through 2008. Street Wisdom To Overcome Mental Health StigmaThroughout our lives we all want to become part of the group, and stigma can arise from factors as innocent as your brand of sneakers. – Mike VenyHe Started Thinking About Stigma EarlyMike Veny’s path to becoming a public speaker became evident at an early age. He convinced the staff at psychiatric hospitals to discharge him three times during his childhood. In addition to being hospitalized as a child, he was expelled from 3 schools, attempted suicide, and was regularly medicated in efforts to reduce his emotional instability and behavioral outbursts.By the fifth grade, Mike was put in a special education class. Aside from getting more individualized attention from the teacher, he learned that pencil erasers make a great drumming sound when tapped on a desk. He had no idea that real drumming would become his career as well as his path to recovery for his many troubling experiences with repeated mental health stigma.Today his interesting perspectives help others understand the need for improved conversations about mind health and recovery. Note: This a reposting of a popular previous publication 2 years ago.His Current Mission With StigmaMike Veny is both a leading mental health speaker and a high energy drum circle facilitator. He delivers educational, engaging, and entertaining presentations to meetings and conferences throughout the world – with an emphasis on translating thought into action.Mike is fiercely committed to wellness, suicide prevention, and helping people work together more smoothly. With 15 years of experience, his mission is to empower people to connect authentically wherever they work or live, from schools to corporate groupings.Mike’s perspectives have been featured on ABC, NBC, and CBS news. He’s a regular guest on The Fresh Outlook TV news show,a writer for Corporate Wellness MagazineHealthCentral.comMental Illness is An AssetHis compelling TEDx presentation below is used in college classrooms with excellent reviews.————-Mike Veny: Here At CBJ/313I take drumming into my mental health presentations [3:32]I bring people together through a drumming process [4:49]I do have some “issues” from childhood [9:27]“You never fail until you stop trying” [16:49]Stigma arises from labels and a sense of shame [25:26]We just don’t want to be weird [2829]Once I got comfortable talking about myself my life changed [36:34]What you can and cannot talk about [38:30]His Websitewww.TransformingStigma.com Mike’s TEDx Talk on YouTube: Mental Illness is an AssetReferencesBreaking The Silence: The Stigma of Mental Illness Polly Fielding – Global Amazon LinkPrevious CBJ Interviews & Pages – That Address StigmaIn truth, every interviewer here at CBJ addresses the importance of underlying, overlooked factors that lead to stigma and labels. Parent Alert! ADHD Parenting EvolvesDr. Sharon Saline, Northampton, MA, Sharon Saline, a clinical psychologist and author What Your ADHD Child Wishes You Knew: Working Together to Empower Kids for Success in School and Life, specializes in working with kids, young adults and families living with ADHD, learning disabilities and other mental health issues. The upshot of her work is the instructive guide for ADHD Parenting. Her unique perspective - as a sibling in an ADHD home, combined with decades of experience as a clinical psychologist and educator/clinician consultant - assists her in guiding families and adults towards effective communication and closer connections. She lectures and facilitates workshops internationally on topics such as understanding ADHD, executive functioning, different kinds of learners and the teen brain. How: Dr. Saline's Helpful Advice To Reconsider ADHD Parenting - The 5 C'sBased on dozens of interviews from kids and families as well as clinical examples, this book shares the voices of kids with ADHD themselves and provides a parenting model that emphasizes practical approaches to everyday challenges and helps parents of all kids, not just those with ADHD.My approach for ADHD Parenting progress is called The 5C's of ADHD Parenting - it relies on:Self-Control,Compassion,Collaboration,Consistency, andCelebrationWhyThese daily practices reduce the frustration that most families living with the ADHD parenting experience. Kids with ADHD want to be included in discussions of plans aimed at helping them. When they don't feel heard or considered, they lack buy-in and cooperation. They need direct instruction to improve executive functioning challenges and usually can identify areas where they need help.Kids with ADHD want to be noticed for their efforts, not just their failures. They hear so much criticism that they don't believe feedback can be positive. It's often hard for them to get motivated or like themselves in light of the amount of negativity they receive.Photo by Simon Rae on Unsplash-------------LinksWhat Your ADHD Child Wishes You Knew - 2018, SalineDr. Saline's Office:  www.drsharonsaline.com - Additional InformationParker ADHD Training ModulesADHD101 - 55 lessons + coaching: How to measure, target, & treat brain/biomedical realities https://www.corebrainacademy.com/adhd-treatment-failureThe PM Drop - Minicourse: Learn how to use the most common medication problems to correct treatment activities & comorbid conditions not initially recognized.https://www.corebrainacademy.com/pm-drop-------------Parker At The Autism Recovery Summit - ADHD/Autism-------------Multiple CBJ Experts Weigh InCBJ Teens Page with Multiple Expert References: http://corebrainjournal.com/teens

Educational Testing, Social Justice, Money & LabelsWe cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.~ Albert Einstein Dr. Zak Stein - Dr. Stein's educational testing interests focus on the interface between social justice and education, including specializations in developmental psychology and ethics. He studied philosophy and religion at Hampshire College, and then educational neuroscience, human development, and his doctorate in philosophy of education at Harvard University. While a student at Harvard, he co-founded what would become Lectica, Inc., a non-profit dedicated to the research-based, justice-oriented reform of large-scale standardized educational testing in K-12, higher education, and business. He writes on a broad range of topics including the philosophy of learning, educational technology, and the fundamental theory of education translated to applications for everyday life.Neuroscientifically validated details also matter for educational testing. Current testing requirements, including IQ, don't adequately cover mind complexity. Listen and comment. Consider: should the term for current standards of educational testing results and their subsequent applications with students more accurately be characterized by the term social injustice?Educational Testing EvolvesTesting doesn't adequately cover mind complexity. Imprecise results create myriads of challenges for everyone concerned - from students to teachers to school administrators and parents.Currently, Dr. Stein serves as Chair of the Education Program at Meridian University, and as Academic Director of the activist think-tank at the Center for Integral Wisdom.Ed Note: Daniel Schmachtenberger [http://corebrainjournal.com/084], our respected mutual colleague at Neurohacker, is friends with and referred Zak.Bottom line: our system of education-labels in the context of new measurements, new data and evolved mind considerations is woefully inadequate and potentially damaging to the lives of those mislabeled. Essential Tremor Treated With High-Intensity Focused UltrasoundDr. Michael Kaplitt is the first doctor in New York to use high-intensity focused ultrasound [HIFU] to relieve a patient’s Essential Tremor - ET. The procedure is part of a new clinical trial testing the use of this technology to eliminate the source of tremors in a completely non-invasive way. Dr. Kaplitt and his neurosurgical team, along with Dr. Levi Chazen from Radiology and Dr. Harini Sarva from Neurology, were able to watch as the patient’s tremor diminished visibly during the procedure. [Listen to his patient Steve here at CBJ as he tells you what it felt like coming out of HIFU treatment.]Essential tremor may be mild in some individuals, but in others, it can become debilitating over time. The tremors, which are often most severe in the hands, can interfere with everyday activities such as eating, drinking, writing or tying shoelaces.Ed Note: This is an important republication from CBJ/232.Patient Experience with Dr. Kaplitt's TeamWe asked for this interview after working with For a previous CBJ report from a healed golfer-patient treated by Dr. Kaplitt with HIFU listen here: CBJ/221. This Ultrasound tool and the Tremor Treatment Team at Weill Cornell Brain & Spine is simply amazing.Current treatment options for ET - Essential Tremor include medication as well as Deep-Brain Stimulation (DBS), which involves implanting a battery-operated neurotransmitter under the collarbone connected to a wire that runs up the length of the neck into the scalp, where it is guided to the brain through a small hole in the skull. The tip of this wire sends the electrical impulses generated by the neurotransmitter into the precise spot in the brain that regulates the activity of the key circuits in essential tremor. In a phrase, brain surgery.Michael Kaplitt MD, Ph.D., and the Weill Cornell team are also national leaders in the use of DBS for essential tremor, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy and a variety of other disorders for more than 15 years.Listen up as Dr. Kaplitt discusses with us this remarkable new, non-invasive procedure to correct ET without brain surgery. - And he answers some of my questions about Parkinson's as well.Photo by Nathan Dumlao on UnsplashAdditional Research WorkDr. Kaplitt has pioneered human gene therapy for neurodegenerative disorders, having performed as a student the first rodent study that used the adeno-associated virus (AAV) vehicle for gene transfer to the brain. He performed the world’s first human gene therapy procedure for Parkinson’s disease and more recently helped to guide the first successful randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled trial of this experimental treatment, which was the first positive trial of this kind for gene therapy in any brain disorder. His Psychiatric Side Beyond Essential TremorHe is also pioneering the development of novel deep brain stimulation treatments for psychiatric conditions, including refractory drug addiction. Biomedical Evidence - Hedaya on The Biology of Mind and BodyThe important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. — Albert EinsteinEveryday we increasingly confirm that inflammation directly effects brain function. Over time it can create permanent change. - Robert Hedaya Treatment Failure Without Biomedical Evidence Treatment failure, especially in the face of proper training and the best information, means you're/we're missing something. We're missing mind complexity. It's not the patient's fault. It's not the doctor's fault. Looking to blame someone? Blame our historical dependency on behavioral appearances. The inadequacy of reductionistic labels denies the complex reality of mind, body and biomedical functional complexity. The system is set to run on labels and medications that target those dancing clouds of surface appearances. We're living in akimbo-land, with a frustrating global problem of misperception in the context of current scientific details. It's not that the current psychiatric system is bad or broken - it's excellent - and yet the labels system remains merely inadequate in the context of fresh data from modern neuroscience. Repeated imprecision builds disdain, distrust, and stigma....misunderstandings and neglect create more confusion in this world than trickery and malice. At any rate, the last two are certainly much less frequent.~ Goethe - 1774Don't assume bad intentions over neglect and misunderstanding.~ Hanlon's Razor - 1990Dr. Hedaya unearthed this flash of insight many years ago, back in 1985, and it continues to drive him, as he's still searching today. In this episode, Dr. Hedaya shares his personal story and tells us how he turned his medical, psychiatric curiosity in a different direction. Hedaya emphatically encourages more critical thinking - with more systematic reviews of dynamic change, time, and context. More careful biomedical reviews do inevitably change the rules of the game.Listen while we discuss just how he became one of the leading national authorities in that interesting space, the polarity, between traditional psychiatry and functional medicine. Also, listen carefully to how often we both bring up inflammation as an important marker on the crossroads between these two often adversarial diagnostic and treatment strategies.Ed Note: Dr. Hedaya continues in active practice, and, also, remains firmly involved in mind research. In this interview, he discusses the relevance of pain and inflammation in his own life, and the discoveries he's made on his clinical journey into the challenging territories of dementia, including TBI and Alzheimer's. Notice how we segue into IgG measurements, and the challenges of other mind inflammations found downstream from food sensitivities.Note also that this is a re-publication from CoreBrain Journal/005 very soon after we started this Journal three years ago, and it is not outdated. Dr. Hedaya is an internationally prominent functional medicine psychiatrist who teaches at Georgetown, well worth a listen. Inflammation matters. His Message In A Sentence: Every treatment failure, every refractory, chronic mind imbalance deserves specific biomedical measurements for contributory factors, including inflammatory processes. Thanks, Bob!Dr. Hedaya's Connections For Additional...

Sadowsky, Karen Schwarzberg Lipson, Matthew B. Sullivan, J. Gregory Caporaso and Rosa Krajmalnik-BrownBackgroundAutism spectrum disorders (ASD) are complex neurobiological disorders that impair social interactions and communication and lead to restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior, interests, and activities. The causes of these disorders remain poorly understood, but gut microbiota, the 1013 bacteria in the human intestines, have been implicated because children with ASD often suffer gastrointestinal (GI) problems that correlate with ASD severity.Several previous studies have reported abnormal gut bacteria in children with ASD. The gut microbiome-ASD connection has been tested in a mouse model of ASD, where the microbiome was mechanistically linked to abnormal metabolites and behavior.Similarly, a study of children with ASD found that oral non-absorbable antibiotic treatment improved GI and ASD symptoms, albeit temporarily. Here, a small open-label clinical trial evaluated the impact of Microbiota Transfer Therapy (MTT) on gut microbiota composition and GI and ASD symptoms of 18 ASD-diagnosed children.ResultsMTT involved a 2-week antibiotic treatment, a bowel cleanse, and then an extended fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) using a high initial dose followed by daily and lower maintenance doses for 7–8 weeks. The Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale revealed an approximately 80% reduction of GI symptoms at the end of treatment, including significant improvements in symptoms of constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, and abdominal pain.ConclusionsThis exploratory, extended-duration treatment protocol thus appears to be a promising approach to alter the gut microbiome and virome and improve GI and behavioral symptoms of ASD. Improvements in GI symptoms, ASD symptoms, and the microbiome all persisted for at least 8 weeks after treatment ended, suggesting a long-term impact.Similarly, clinical assessments showed that behavioral ASD symptoms improved significantly and remained improved 8 weeks after treatment ended....
