The Christian life is nothing other than a daily Baptism. Baptism does not just happen to us; by it, the Lord transforms us by death and resurrection (Romans 6:3-4). We believe that Baptism is for all ages. Since Baptism is commanded for all nations (Matthew 28:19) and gives us the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38-39), we trust in the power of the Word as opposed to ourselves. The power, work, profit, fruit, and purpose of Baptism is this—to save (Colossians 1:13-14; John 3:5; 1 Peter 3:21). The water is not mere water, but a life-giving fount for those who believe. Our identity is not as one who was baptized, but as one who is baptized into Christ and saved in body and soul. To understand Baptism is to keep the simple words of Scripture. The devil is actively working in this world against the Word of God. He wants nothing more than for us to ignore the Word, hold onto a guilty conscience over our sins, and to question the full sufficiency of Christ’s cross. “Your will be done and not the devil’s!” is our prayer without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17-18). Temptations are always before us. Temptation comes through the world, the flesh, and the devil. Although Christians will be tempted until Christ returns or calls us home, Christ does not leave us defenseless. He provides us with the armor and weapons to fight and gives us the victory (Ephesians 6:10-18). While temptations face each one of us, the temptations themselves will vary for each person. As it states in Genesis 6:5, the intentions and “thoughts of [our] heart[s] [are] only evil continually.” Without Christ’s forgiveness, we are sorely lost, thinking more highly of ourselves than we ought to think. As those who are redeemed, we cling to the promise of His mercy and go joyfully to Him in prayer with nothing but the certain knowledge of the forgiveness of sins. We seek God’s will, but the devil’s will is the exact opposite. The Lord desires us to have no other gods; the devil’s will is that we have MANY gods. We look to the Lord for the Gospel, faith, and the Holy Spirit as we realize that there is a battle raging. An unbeliever has no battle because the Word is not heard, but for the baptized there is a struggle. The struggle, however, is not more powerful than the resurrected Lord! We ask for God’s kingdom to come among us. Where you find the kingdom, there you find the King (Jesus). Where you find the King (Jesus), there you find the kingdom. God’s name is holy, and we are to proclaim His Word faithfully and live holy lives according to it. Prayer is filled with promise. The Lord hears and answers us according to His gracious will. He provides us with the gift of the Lord’s Prayer, that we may confidently come to Him, knowing He will give us what we need. Our shelter and protection rests in our prayers as a weapon against the devil and the sinful world, not because of the prayers themselves, but because of the power of the One who hears. The Holy Spirit daily administers forgiveness and will continue to do so until the end. He increases holiness within the Christian Church that is not finished until Christ returns. There will be a time when forgiveness will no longer be needed. Until then, we see what we are to do as the baptized children of the Triune God who paid our ransom while still working on us. The Holy Spirit makes one holy by His Word. Sanctification is the understanding that the Holy Spirit makes us holy and leads us to live a holy life. The Spirit creates faith in Christ and then gathers His people into the Church. In this Church, He continues to bring salvation to sinners by the Word and still makes them holy. Jesus Christ is Lord. To be Lord is to redeem sinners from the devil, death, and all evil.
