Libraries get rid of books all the time. There are so many new books coming in every day and only a finite amount of library space. The practice of freeing up library space is called weeding. When the main branch of the San Francisco Public Library was damaged by an earthquake 1989, the argument over which books need to be weeded, and how they were chosen for removal, reached fever pitch. This episode originally aired on May 14, 2019.Weeding is Fundamental Subscribe to SiriusXM Podcasts+ to listen to new episodes of 99% Invisible ad-free and a whole week early. Start a free trial now on Apple Podcasts or by visiting siriusxm.com/podcastsplus.

How did millions of Americans end up living in neighborhoods where finding fresh food is harder than ever, and why is the problem by design, not accident? After Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin murdered George Floyd last year, tens of thousands of people all over the world took to the streets to protest police violence against Black people. And if you look at images from these marches, you will probably start to notice a common color scheme -- one involving a lot of red, black, and green. The flag was invented to unite Black people all over the world living under racial repression. When it first came into existence, the flag posed some bold questions about where Black people owed their loyalty: was it to the nations where their lives were demeaned and threatened? Or to a new nation - one they would build entirely for themselves? For hundreds of thousands of Black people, the red-black-and-green symbolized the answer. The Red, the Black, and the Green Subscribe to SiriusXM Podcasts+ to listen to new episodes of 99% Invisible ad-free and a whole week early. Start a free trial now on Apple Podcasts or by visiting siriusxm.com/podcastsplus.

I'd like to know where Drumph gets his numbers. he says a couple of million illegal migrants have come into the USA from Canada. He should be trying to stop guns from coming into Canada from the USA. That's a real problem. we have had 3 murders in the last year. that's more than since 1966 when my town started. He also said that Canada is responsible for 200000 or 300000 people because of the opioid crisis. he is a whackjob and he is speaking language that sounds like a preemptive strike speech.

I love a good mashup - just like 99PI and Brandon Lee Mulligan, or Robert Moses and D&D. These crossovers make me feel more connected to the world around me, somehow.

Loved this perspective on the Brooklyn Bridge- it always amazes me to remember both the ingenuity and the sacrifice that built such incredible structures in times before our most modern machines.

Given Moses's relentless, arbitrary, egotistical cruelty--especially regarding people's homes--I'm surprised no one took matters into their own hands. If the system fails to provide justice, people may seek it on their own. Moses seemed surprisingly confident that people would just abide his cruelty.

Whew, the podcast commentary is going to be just about as long as the book they're covering! 😅 All jokes aside, there's so much in Caro's tome to unpack each episode.
