He’s definitely one of the most covered musical artists of all time and it’s always interesting to hear other people do his songs but I’ve also peppered this show with some interesting comments by Dylan himself talking about his music from my favorite interviews with Bob (by Ed Bradley & Mary Travers) interspersed with the most interesting cover versions of Bob’s songs (Nina Simone, Bryan Ferry, Chrissie Hynde et al.) I’ve been listening to recently. Life’s contradictions are what make life so interesting. Sex & God. Politics and Power. War and Peace. Madness and Music. You can find all these elements in the complicated soul of MARVIN GAYE. I’m still celebrating the 50th anniversary of his brilliant landmark album WHAT’S GOING ON this year and also honoring the very complicated persona of the man himself with some intimate details revealed in rare conversations with him plus a retrospective look at the depth and breadth of his musical output. I tried to avoid the obvious cover versions (e.g. we’ll hear The Flying Pickets' a cappella version of I Heard It Through The Grapevine rather than CCR doing it!) We’ll also hear Smokey Robinson & Carlos Santana’s highly charged personal comments on the fascinating and puzzling behavior that made MARVIN so unique in this special session of RMR ♞ The Playlist {3/30/2021}”The Soul Of A Man (A Marvin Gaye Tribute)” ▶︎ Intro x Ain’t That Peculiar (single version)/Marvin Gaye ▹ Let’s Get It On (Motown Remix)/Marvin Gaye ▹ I Want You (album version)/Marvin Gaye ▹ Can I Get A Witness (VDO Mix Version)/Sam Brown ▹ How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)/James Taylor ▹ I Heard It Through The Grapevine/The Flying Pickets ▹ For Your Precious Love/Erykah Badu & D’Angelo ▹ Mercy Mercy Me/Sarah Jane Morris & Bill Frisell ▹ Mercy Mercy Me/The Isleys & Carlos Santana ▹ Inner City Blues (Vinyl Mix)/Placebo ▹ What’s Happening Brother/Marvin Gaye ▹ Nightshift/The Commodores ▹ What’s Going On/Cyndi Lauper ▹ Like Marvin/Speech ▹ Sexual Healing/Kate Bush ▹ God Is Love (single version)/Marvin Gaye ▹ Wholy Holy (Live/1972)/Aretha Franklin ▹ Sixties Medley (Live In Concert)/Marvin Gaye ♜ {Image: This is the cover art for In Our Lifetime by Marvin Gaye. It's Neil Young's birthday this month!✨He's 75 now and I realized I had not ever done a tribute show for this brilliant, influential & truly unique musical artist. Not yet. Until now. It was not nearly as daunting as I thought it might be considering the depth and breadth of his musical output, mainly because I've got Neil's comments and observations (thanks to a great interview with RSA) connecting his songs at key junctures which are so focused and genuine they leave no room for doubt as to the man's sincerity regarding some very 'real' key human issues. I've also included some remarkable rare live versions and several surprisingly good cover versions of classics like Old Man, Rockin' In The Free World, After The Gold Rush, Ohio, Helpless, Down By The River, Don't Let It Bring You Down, The Loner, Heart Of Gold and many more. Thank you Neil for all the music and the inspiration! In the midst of all the chronic infighting (political and otherwise) dominating the news a few rather remarkable interviews I saw rose above all the divisive negative vibes. Jim Carrey discussing his growing spiritual awakening and his surreally autobiographical new book, Yusuf (formerly Cat Stevens) talking about the rerecording of his classic Tea For The Tillerman album and the late (& greatly missed) Leonard Cohen recalling his time as a Zen monk, all implanted in me the notion to make a podcast about how some very fortunate individuals happen to 'wise up', that is, how they discovered something much greater than their success and fame. Of course part of what they learned was that you don’t have to be rich and famously successful to find that “There’s a crack, a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.” This session of music and words from some of my personal favorite artists and wised up individuals (Alan Watts, John Prine, Ayya Khema, Indigo Girls, Ram Dass, Lisa Germano, Eckhart Tolle, Bill Callahan, Cohen, Yusuf, Chaplin and yes, Jim Carrey too) will hopefully help listeners find that intriguingly sweet spot of pleasurable balance between a potential weightiness of subject matter and the lightness of being able to let it all go ✧ The MUSIC ▷ Mountains Of Things/Tracy Chapman ▹ Some Humans Ain’t Human/John Prine ▹ Look Long/Indigo Girls ▹ On The Way To Find Out (edit)/Cat Stevens ▹ Where Do The Children Play (new Version)/Yusuf ▹ This Is What You Did/This Is The Kit ▹ Bardo Rush/Bruce Cockburn ▹ Bird On A Wire/Marc Ribot & My Brightest Diamond ▹ Anthem (Live in London)/Leonard Cohen ▹ Wise Enough/Lamb ▹ Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad/Moby ▹ Come Into Knowledge/Ramp ▹ Someday/Ke ▹ Wise Up/Aimee Mann ▹ Night/Bill Callahan ▹ The Darkest Night Of All/Lisa Germano ▹ One Day At A Time/Eric Bibb ✧ Speakers featured in this session (in order of appearance): Jim Carrey Yusuf Leonard Cohen Alan Watts Ayya Khema Ram Dass Charles Chaplin Eckhart Tolle {Art by Mikheil Kasradze} I do not own any of the songs, music or pictures, all rights goes to the respected owners. Are you ready for THE ART OF PROTEST Pt. 2?
