Jesse Daniel Edwards is a songwriter from California who now makes his home in Nashville. Edwards has lived an incredible life. He has gone from growing up without television or internet, to leaving home at 16, to tour managing for the likes of Jason Isbell, Lucinda Williams, and Morrissey(!) and making unique, fascinating records. This year he has released not one, not two, but three wonderful collections of songs- two EPs and a full length. I highly recommend all three. This conversation went in so many different directions, y’all. I am grateful for Jesse as a thought partner and for the art he shares with the world. Everyone, it is my great honor to present my conversation with Jesse Daniel Edwards. Chris Margolin is a singer, songwriter, educator, father, and husband from the Pacific Northwest. The man is an inspiration. Middle school teacher by day, rock n’ roller by night- Chris has been educating the youth of America for over twenty years and moving crowds by night for thirty. Despite a demanding day job, and the responsibilities of having a family, he maintains a prolific recording schedule that includes his latest wonderful offering David St., which finds Margolin and his band the Contraband collaborating to touch on country, grunge, 90s pop, and so much more goodness!  This was a long time in the making. Chris and I had not met until this moment but it feels we have known each other for years as we have long interacted on Twitter. It was one of those episodes that felt like hangs with an old friend and it is my pleasure to bring you, my conversation with Chris Margolin. Guetts and Sma from the band Crumbsnatchers are our guests for Episode 194. Crumbsnatchers hails from Nashville, Tennessee, and boasts a singular sound and a live show that compels devotion. Guetts, the frontman and principal songwriter, has lived a fascinating life whose experiences translate to records that remind of your favorite bands while defying comparison. We were supposed to catch up with Crumbsnatchers during Bonnaroo 2025, but the weather and the powers that be had other designs. Bonnaroo was cancelled after a magical day and a half during which I had the pleasure of seeing the band twice in a twenty-four hour period. Thankfully, our paths were destined to connect just a couple days later in Nashville. Guetts invited me over to his house outside Music City and we had a blast talking about the origins of the band, the importance of Bonnaroo to their development, impromptu parties at a certain campground’s pool, and so much more! Emily Scott Robinson is our guest for Episode 193 of The Marinade! NPR has said of her, “With her pure, bracing vocal set against an achingly somber piano, Emily Scott Robinson doesn't marinate in misery so much as summon the strength to venture up to a precipice and stand at "the edge of something wild.” Yep! That’s Emily. She’s a skilled songwriter who is dedicated to her craft, a powerhouse singer, and a really fun conversation partner! I have wanted to make this conversation happen for years and am so grateful for the opportunity. We caught up via Zoom recently- her from her home in Colorado and me from a hotel room in Chattanooga, Tennessee, during my third annual Grounded Summer Tour. Check out this podcast feed for more on that. S.G. Goodman is a singer and songwriter from Hickman, KY, who now makes her home in Murray, KY. Her outstanding third album Planting By The Signs is available everywhere now. Goodman’s music has been a constant in my life since her debut solo record Old Time Feeling dropped in 2020. She is a storyteller with few peers who blends soul, country, indie rock, blues- all the things, to create her signature sound.  I have been wanting to have S.G. on the show for five years and it has now become a reality. We caught up via Zoom while I was staying at the KOA campground in Nashville, TN, during my Grounded Summer tour where I covered Bonnaroo and spent some time throughout the South. If you are interested in hearing more stories from that experience, check out our podcast feed and marinadepodcast.com. Y’all, this was such an honor. This was even cooler than I could have imagined and I am so grateful to bring you my conversation with S.G. Goodman.  Listen on: Apple Podcasts- https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-marinade-with-jason-earle/id1281080492?i=1000714363651 Spotify- https://open.spotify.com/episode/2WEukpivJq5Xbw5x2abz3o?si=10a553f5e27d4402 YouTube- https://youtu.be/O-CavUauNyo?si=8U_9WP20T-ZZUlEg
Preston Canavan is a comedian from Winter Park, FL, who is one of my favorites doing it right now. I have the pleasure of getting to see him perform at my favorite third space in the world, Barley and Vine Biergarten just steps away from my home. Every time I have seen Preston perform, he has left me doubled over laughing.  This conversation was no exception. Y’all, I am sometimes a dumb dumb. I am learning how to use fancy new equipment gifted by one of our wonderful Patreon patrons Seth Gill. Aaaand, I didn’t record the first conversation with Preston. He came over on a Thursday, we caught lightning in a bottle, and it only exists as a cell phone video.  Have no fear, dear listener. First, I published the video in its entirety - bloopers and all - on our Patreon. You can watch that by subscribing or you can pay for it a la carte. I promise it’s worth the watch.  Second, Preston being the sweetheart he is, agreed to come over a second time and we had another incredible conversation. I know I say this is one of my favorites all the time, but this is one of my all time favorites. Preston is a bright light and I am so grateful for these conversations. Everyone, it is my honor to bring you my conversation with Preston Canavan.  Listen On: Spotify- https://open.spotify.com/episode/2BFGDsncSP1TIJRn2VkjEq?si=d29b67ff8f5643e8 YouTube- https://youtu.be/2Q3YmkFGvi4?si=dnFKKtN_X2bKDZFN Apple Podcasts- https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-marinade-with-jason-earle/id1281080492?i=1000711466996
Kelsey Waldon has established herself as an artist firmly in tune with herself as a writer yet not content with resting on her sterling reputation. With each record her pen has further flowered, culminating in this instance with an invigorating album that pays homage to country music’s past while forging toward a confessional, self-reflective, vulnerable brand of tunes that stands out even among many of her esteemed peers. Given that she was introduced to a broader audience when she signed with the late, legendary John Prine’s Oh Boy Records in 2019, one would be forgiven for thinking Kelsey is relatively new to the music scene. On the contrary, she has paid her dues and the years of honing her craft jump out on Every Ghost. Caitlin Cannon is a powerhouse singer, songwriter, actor, and comedian. Her new record Love Addict is chock full of bangers that grabbed me on the first listen. It’s got country in it with some psychedelica. The album is a sonic and lyrical journey that pushes the envelope.  On some episodes, you really connect with the guest. I feel like this is one of those episodes. Everyone, it is my honor to bring you, my conversation with Caitlin Cannon. The song you are hearing in this episode is "Love Addict" from Caitlin's album of the same name.  Listen on: Spotify- https://open.spotify.com/episode/5nuvJFFlIwlRtc85MUWT20?si=430ead04bbd8431d Apple Podcasts- https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-marinade-with-jason-earle/id1281080492?i=1000709074854 YouTube- https://youtu.be/PNdPEbKAwKs?si=U4Gpzx0as3x_LTjn
Little Feat's legend goes back to 1969! The band has produced ubiquitous hits like "Dixie Chicken" and "Willin'." Their influence stretches across generations. They have endured heartbreak, loss, and lineup changes but the core Little Feat sound has remained true since the beginning. Scott Sharrard joined LIttle Feat in 2019 and has been instrumental in their efforts leading up to the band's latest record Strike Up The Band, which was released on May 9th, 2025.  In addition to his work with Little Feat, Scott was the band leader for the Gregg Allman Band and his band The Chesterfields. The band, and Scott, have lived a fascinating musical life.  The song you are hearing in this episode is "Midnight Flight" from Little Feat's excellent new record.  Listen on: Spotify- Apple Podcasts- YouTube-
Matt Andersen is a singer and songwriter from New Brunswick, Canada whose career has spanned over twenty years and somehow, despite his work being very much in my wheelhouse, I am just now learning about it all. This man’s voice, his playing, his writing- it all shines on each of his records and especially so on his new record The Hammer & The Rose. The Hammer & The Rose was released on April 25, 2025 and it is squarely on my 2025 superlatives list. Before I get to my conversation with Matt, I want to thank three new Patreon patrons! Bob Beatty, Seth Gill, and Tom Romito have all joined our Patreon community lately. Patreon.com/marinadepodcast if you would like to support The Marinade and enjoy some bonus content. The song you are hearing in this episode is "Tonight Belongs To You" from Matt's new album The Hammer & The Rose.
