Caty Szeto is a woman with a dream: to become a K-Pop superstar. The 23-year-old Asian American is traveling from her home in LA to South Korea’s capital Seoul to attend a K-Pop academy. There she’ll do hardcore training in singing, dancing and styling. All this is to prepare for make-or-break auditions for K-Pop entertainment agencies. If she makes it, Caty could be like all those chart-topping idols who travel the world, perform to legions of fans and make millions. But this quest has its challenges. Caty finds out about ageism in the industry, where many new idols are in their teens. Then she comes face-to-face with incredibly specific K-beauty standards while navigating being a foreigner in K-Pop. Over just three months, our host journalist Haeryun Kang follows Caty to see if she can overcome these obstacles and reach K-Pop stardom. Why always assumptions that teens "need fixed". More than likely they have dealt with immense trauma within their family setting. When are parents held accountable?
So well made and so heartbreaking. It's one of those stories that's going to haunt me a while
Heartbreaking. Truth revealing. Respect to its survivors. I hope a sequel on this podcast will track down more of them and let them tell their stories about life after sedu.
as someone who went to a later/east-coast iteration of CEDU and endured all of these experiences, this was really powerful and i hope this podcast and story spreads because the “industry” is so in the shadows and somehow no one knows the truth about it. it should be an issue that is brought to light and fought all the way to washington. great pod and THANK YOU! 👍🏼👍🏼

Great podcast!!
great podcast!
excellent podcast 👍👍👍
I would definitely have qualified as one of the 'softer kids' Good lord😧
Now the icing on the cake - 'smooshing' with other residents and, omg, staff😬 Don't ask me about Rudy - what a POS!😠 Thanks Aaliyah for your bravery in telling your story.
A lot of the 'behaviour' of these kids is, in part, caused by useless parenting. Then they ship them off to a cult??!! Unbelievable!
This is cult behaviour and Randolph was, and still is, part of it. Scarily, he cannot grasp the immensity of what he is admitting.
As soon as everyone knows your 'secrets' you are easy to manipulate. The armed forces use the same tactics to 'break' a recruit. Those rap sessions were terrifying to listen to, god knows how those kids felt there. Psychological torture - plain and simple.
Great Podcast!!
This is heartbreaking - how can we treat our young people this way? I can empathise - I hated school and didn't fit in. Years later, I realised I had depression due to growing up in a dysfunctional, abusive home. These parents thought they were actually helping, which is all the more devastating. Great podcast but so sad.
Heartbreaking story. very well made podcast. highly recommend.
