The Sealed Book

"The Sealed Book" was a classic Old Time Radio (OTR) series that delved into horror and mystery tales. It aired on the Mutual network from March 18 to September 9, 1945.Here's a breakdown of the show:

• Format: "The Sealed Book" was a melodramatic anthology series, meaning each episode presented a new, standalone story. The show began each week with the dramatic "sound of the great gong," as the mysterious "keeper of the book" opened a ponderous door to a secret vault. Inside, the "great sealed book" was said to contain "all the secrets and mysteries of mankind through the ages," offering tales of "murder, of madness, of dark deeds strange and terrible beyond all belief."
• Host: Philip Clarke was the show's host and narrator, guiding listeners through the eerie stories.
• Writers: The scripts for "The Sealed Book" were primarily written by Robert Arthur, Jr. and David Kogan, who were also responsible for another popular OTR mystery series, "The Mysterious Traveler." In fact, "The Sealed Book" often recycled and adapted popular stories from "The Mysterious Traveler."
• Episodes: There were 26 known episodes of "The Sealed Book." The first episode was "The Hands of Death," and the series concluded with "You Only Die Once." Many of these episodes are still available today through Old Time Radio archives and platforms.
• Popularity & Influence: While "The Sealed Book" was a relatively short-lived series, it was a part of the popular horror and mystery genre in OTR. Its format and gruesome plots have been noted for having similarities to what would later become the comic book "Tales from the Crypt," particularly with the "Keeper of the Book" character echoing the "Crypt Keeper."
