If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?“I would like our society to talk about the invisible load of culturally sanctioned stress, holistic principles in health care and the importance of looking within for wisdom, self respect and self compassion. “______________________“It is not only until we explore the whole person, that true health can be found”. These words resonate so deeply with me given my complicated health journey and I’ve been looking forward to sitting down with today’s guest to discuss this topic further. Dr Michelle Woolhouse is an integrative GP, author, podcaster & medical director with over 23 years of experience in this space. Her special interests include women’s health, mental health issues, such as anxiety, stress and burn-out, mind-body medicine and the neurobiology of healing. Dr Michelle loves exploring all facets of health with her patients, including nutritional and lifestyle requirements, mental and emotional underpinnings and of course social and environmental influences. She particularly loves teaching emotional transformation techniques and supporting mental health in the context of physical diseases. Dr Michelle has additional post-graduate training in mind-body medicine, meditation, energetic healing, nutritional and environmental medicine and holds fellowships with the Royal Australian College of GP’s (FRACGP), the Australasian society of Lifestyle Medicine (ASLM) and Australasian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine (FACNEM). Given I wrote a book about taking control of your own health & wellbeing, I have been looking forward to sitting down with Dr Michelle to get her view on a few things in the medical space. Today, I’m joined by Thomas Nhan Tri Nguyen who has a fascinating story that I wanted to learn more about. From music halls to the battlefield and now boardroom, Thomas (or Tom’s) journey is anything but conventional. Tom is of Vietnamese heritage. He grew up in Adelaide, the only child of migrants who were fleeing war-torn Vietnam. While his early years were filled with music and academia, he started his working life as a public servant in the Queensland Government. A desire for a greater challenge led him down an unexpected path: the Australian Defence Force.Commissioned as an artillery officer in 2007, Tom served with distinction as a troop commander, navigating the complexities of field operations during a pivotal era in Australia’s military engagements. But Tom wanted more and it was then he discovered the world of management consulting and reinvented himself once again. An MBA from INSEAD in France launched him into the global stage with McKinsey, where he worked across 15 countries before returning to Australia to establish his own strategic advisory practice.Tom’s story is one of curiosity, courage, and constant reinvention—a testament to the power of stepping outside your comfort zone. Today, he applies lessons learned from both the battlefield and the boardroom to help others navigate their own transformative journeys. Let’s meet Tom and find out more… For more information about Thomas, check out these places;-Linkedin: Thomas Nhan Tri NguyenInstagram: @tomntnguyenHead to michellejcox.com for more information about the ONE QUESTION podcast, your host or today’s guestsConnect with Michelle on Linkedin here:- @MichelleJCoxConnect with Michelle on Instagram here:- @michellejcoxConnect with Michelle on Facebook here - @michellejcoxAND, if you have a burning topic you’d love people to talk more about, or know someone who’d be great to come on the One Question podcast, please get in touch;- hello@michellejcox.com
...If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be? “How do we hear it, how do we know it is our inner voice and what does it sound like?”_______________Mardi Ritchie is a notable spa therapist, musician and songwriter well known for her holistic approach to skincare and integration of sound therapy in her treatments. With extensive experience in the beauty industry and a background in music, Mardi has pioneered a unique approach that combines touch, sound and scent to create transformative experiences for her clients.Mardi is the owner & founder of Chakana - a stunning day spa we have here in my local town of Avalon - but it’s not like any others I’ve ever been to. With a deep understanding of the mind-body connection and the healing power of sonics, Mardi weaves sound therapy into each of her sensory spa journeys to create multi-layered, transformative experiences. I’ve done a bit of sound healing & sound therapy in my time and it’s something that has a profound effect on me - so I’ve been looking forward to sitting down with the gorgeous Mardi to talk more about things like sonic anatomy and sound resonating chambers - terms I’d never heard of before I started to do the research in this space. If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?“We want to talk about sharing the life admin load in a partnership - being aware of how you’re contributing to dysfunction and letting go of unsustainable standards. Tied into this is budgeting/outsourcing and people’s irrational money stories and money types - trying to do it all rather than asking for and buying help.” _______________ Mia Northrop and Dinah Rowe Roberts first met at high school in Melbourne. They studied together at university and remained fast friends through marriages, dynamic corporate careers in London, Dubai, New York and Vancouver, and the arrival of children. Their combined experience in senior strategy, commercial, digital and customer experience roles did nothing to prevent the onslaught of life admin, which became their passion to solve. Today, Dinah & Mia coach, write, speak and facilitate workshops about life admin, and together they host the podcast ‘Life Admin Life Hacks’. They recently released a book - of course called ‘Life Admin Hacks’ where Mia and Dinah have marshalled their professional expertise in innovation, finance, design thinking and operations to research best practices, trial the tech and craft the most efficient processes to optimise their own life admin. If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?“We all need to take responsibility for our own health and wellbeing” This is a short episode where I’m challenging you to think a little differently about your body and how you treat it. It’s not about badmouthing general practitioners and ridiculing the medical fraternity. It’s a centuries-old notion that doctors are healers and near to gods, but they are mere mortals and their expertise is limited. My crusade is to help you realise that you need to create a working relationship with your medical professionals; surround yourself with a ‘team’ that ensures your body runs as efficiently as it possibly can. If you’d like to read the book “Doctors are not gods” in full or you think it would be good for someone you know, you can find it at all online book stores or purchase it here at the Wabi Sabi Series shop. If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?“In the case of perceived terminal illness, can a medical practitioner truly tell how much ‘time’ someone has got left to live?” I know people and have heard stories of others who have lived for years after been given only weeks or months to live and then others where their wife and 50 years dies and they die weeks later with no obvious medical elements but must’ve felt there was no one left to live for are these cases where the mind truly is more powerful than the body? Being curious about this topic I had discussions with my own oncologist years after my mum’s passing. I asked him his view of giving someone ‘a number’ of days, months or years to live. He passionately told me that he didn't believe in giving ‘a number’ as he felt it was more harmful than good Today’s episode is a shorter piece where I’m challenging you to think a little differently about your body and how you treat it. It’s not about badmouthing general practitioners and ridiculing the medical fraternity. It’s a centuries-old notion that doctors are healers and near to gods, but they are mere mortals and their expertise is limited. If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?
“We all need to take responsibility for our own health and wellbeing”
I think one of the worst things when you are ill and no-one can find out what is wrong with you for weeks or months would be the sheer sense of frustration of not getting any answers. It plays on your mind and starts to affect your daily life. And if you’re in pain, it’s far worse.
Gaslighting is a term that’s commonly used in toxic relationships, where a person manipulates their partner into doubting their own perception of reality by saying things like ‘You're being unreasonable’, ‘You're crazy’, ‘ That never happened’.
Medical gaslighting is a thing and more literature is now coming out about this horrible situation that many people, unfortunately, find themselves in. Healthcare providers are human and they can have unconscious biases that cause patients to be mistreated. Research tells us that women are more likely to be told that their pain is ‘psychosomatic’ or influenced by emotional distress. In some studies, it was found that women waited sixteen minutes longer than men to receive pain medication when they visited an emergency room.
Women have rarely been studied in detail by medical science and were not even included in clinical trials until the 1990’s. There’s a lot to unpack here...have a listen for more!

It’s my inherent belief that you are the only person on this earth who knows your body better than anyone else. Our bodies talk to us all day, every day, and we need to be listening to what they’re saying.

“How to support someone when they are going through trauma.”
Briony Benjamin is a Keynote Speaker, Author and Global Storyteller whose viral videos have been viewed by more than 200million sets of eyeballs. Whilst working as Executive Producer at Australia’s largest media outlet for women (Mamamia.com.au) she got the shock of her life. After feeling awful for over a year she found out it wasn’t because she was a lazy slacker it was because she had cancer… all...through... her... body. Turning the camera on herself, Briony started documenting her journey in the short video 'You Only Get One Life'. Its raw portrayal of her experience went viral, touching millions.
Her first book ‘Life is Tough But So Are You’ published by Murdoch Books has just hit the shelf last week. It shares what this major life wake-up call taught her about living and is packed full of helpful guidance to get you through any sticky time. Briony is passionate about helping individuals face the toughest time of their lives with more ease and less fear and all the while emboldening them to live the biggest, most audacious version of their story.
Briony and I were actually introduced via my producer, the wonderful Brianna - so this interview is the first time we’ve met but the connection was instant. We are kindred spirits, there’s no doubt in my mind. Whether it’s our disposition, or the trauma we’ve both been through on our cancer journeys, I’m not sure - but I’m so pleased Briony has come into my life. She is an absolute ray of sunshine and if only I had a book like she’s written to help me through my tough time - life would have been just that little bit better. This is a heartfelt conversation - I hope you enjoy my chat with the divine, Briony Benjamin.

This is an interesting chapter I thought I’d share with you from my book, Death Doesn’t Have to be Morbid - life, death and learning to grieve.
I’ve always wondered which is the better way to die- fast and furious…or long and loving. Having all the time to say goodbye to a loved one sounds idyllic, but it comes with consequences. Whereas with a quick and unexpected death, often there are things left unsaid. It’s less painful for the one who dies. But far more for the ones left behind.

Many people find it hard to talk about topics like death and dying but personally I don’t think we talk about them enough. This is a short sharp episode where I’m challenging you to think a little differently about a topic that many people are uncomfortable about.
If you’d like to read the book “Death doesn’t have to be morbid” in full or you think it would be good for someone you know, you can find it at all online book stores or purchase it here at the Wabisabiseries shop.

“Your genius is what comes naturally to you.”

“We need to listen more!”
The interview this week is a treat! I’ve managed to coerce Julie & Fiona the formidable duo from the fabulous podcast “Art Wank”, on the other side of the mic. Which was no mean feat, let me tell you! Think ‘Ab Fab for the Artworld’...and you’ll picture what a fun time we had together!
Fiona Verity and Julie Nicholson are two comical, curious artists that came together to create a podcast featuring those in the art community. They talk about their own creative journey as well as interviewing incredible artists, curators, gallery owners, teachers and all the creatives they can find to guide them and learn more about how and why they do what they do. Cheekily named “Art Wank”, the intent of the podcast is to expose the underbelly of the art world, beyond the polished veneer, and instead focus on the process and practice of contemporary art.
Originally both from the UK, Julie & Fiona have lived in Australia for over 20years and happen to live in my neck of the woods here in Avalon so we luckily go to meet in person. They have both had really interesting careers before meeting through their love of art and starting this project together. They have interviewed over 60 artists, creatives and curators since starting Art W**k over a year ago. Their aim is to inspire others to further their own art journeys. I can say from the many episodes I’ve listened to of theirs, the more I hear, the more confidence it gives me around approaching my creative endeavours with more playfulness and less expectation - as everyone does it differently! It was an absolute delight to talk to Julie & Fiona. Please enjoy this entertaining podcast with two wonderful humans.

Justin Jones - otherwise affectionately known as Jonesy, is Australia’s pre-eminent Explorer, keynote speaker, adventure thinker and storyteller. His expeditions have taken him to the very corners of the world. Jonesy is a passionate story teller. Watch his award winning documentaries capturing the amazing expeditions he’s been on;-
Crossing the Ditch
In 2008, Jonesy along with expedition partner, Cas, paddled a kayak unsupported from Australia to New Zealand. After paddling 3318 km over 62 days they finally staggered ashore setting a world record for becoming the longest unsupported double kayak expedition and the first people to cross the Tasman Sea by kayak.
Crossing the Ice
In 2012 he then skied 2275km from the edge of Antarctica to the South Pole and back over 89 days, completely unsupported setting another world first. It became the longest unsupported polar expedition ever undertaken and set a new benchmark and raised the bar of polar exploration globally.
Crossing the Outback
In 2017 Jonesy, his wife Lauren, and one-year old daughter, Morgan undertook an 1800km trek across the Australian outback. For 102 days they lived wild, in synch with the heartbeat of the land, attempting to challenge the belief that you can't lead an adventurous life and a family life at the same time.
Justin is launching Adventure Thinking Experiences later this year for corporate groups and individuals down in Tasmania. They are Tailor made experiences incorpating Adventure, food/wine, luxury and hardship. Check out his website for more deets

A chapter from the book, Life Doesn’t have to be morbid - life, death and learning to grieve.
Death can actually be a source of inspiration. I know that sounds morbid, but stay with me. Think about those secret desires you hold those things you'd love to try but worry you'll be embarrassed about if you failed. I find that thinking about the worst possible scenario helps propel me into action. The worst thing in most cases is literally that your heart stops and you die. So if asking someone on a date, or starting a new business, or writing a book is the thing that terrifies you and excites you at the same time, take a leap of faith and give it a go.

Today I’m covering a topic that I am very passionate about and that is death, dying and grieving. Many people find it hard to talk about these topics but personally I don’t think we talk about them enough.

If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?
“There is no reason for FGM other than patriarchal power”
______
Khadija Gbla is a high profile, passionate and inspiring African Australian woman. She is an award-winning human rights activist, inspirational speaker, facilitator and philanthropist. She has displayed great courage and determination in achieving her aspirations of giving women, youth and minority groups a voice at a local, state and international level. Khadija utilises her powerful and inspired voice to advocate equality and inclusion.
Khadija was born in Sierra Leone, and was just 3-years-old when war broke out in her country. Ten years later she attained refugee status and resettled in Adelaide. Khadija is the lead voice and campaigner on Female Genital Mutilation in Australia and her TED Talk "My mother’s strange definition of empowerment" has reached nearly 3 Million views.
Khadija runs a not for profit organisation Ending Female Genital Mutilation Australia which works to protect Australian girls from FGM and also to support survivors of FGM. Khadija provides training for professionals, advocacy and community education for practising communities in Australia.
She is an Ambassador for Our Watch, an organisation established to change attitudes of violence towards women and their children, and member of Harmony Alliance -Migrant and Refugee Women for Change aims to provide a national inclusive and informed voice on the multiplicity of issues impacting the experiences and outcomes of migrant and refugee women in Australia
Khadija provides advocacy, training, speaking on domestic and family violence, sexual health, racism, human rights, mental health, migrants and refugees and cultural diversity through her cultural consultancy, khadija Gbla Cultural Consultancy.
Ambassador for SisterWorks, a non for profit social enterprise which supports refugee and migrant women to become economically empowered through the model of learning by doing.
The list of what Khadija has achieved in her young life of advocacy is no short of astounding. She’s been recognized through numerous awards including 2019 Instyle Magazine, The Advocate for Acceptance Human Rights Award; 2017 cosmopolitan magazine women of the year finalist; 2016 Women's Weekly and Qantas Women of the Future finalist; 2016 AusMumpreneur Rising Star and Making a difference –non-profit Award & 2014 The Advertiser South Australia’s 50 most Influential Women… to name a few.
I recently had the privilege of seeing Kadija speak on stage where there was not a dry eye in the audience & she was honoured with a standing ovation. Her story is moving. She is so generous in sharing the path she’s taken to get here and it’s one that many would have not been able to endure. I urge you to watch her TEDTalk to understand what she’s been through and how, at 13, this beautiful soul decided ‘enough is enough’!
This topic is not for the feint hearted...but it’s so important that we understand that FGM is happening here in Australia TODAY! And as a Child Abuse issue, it’s something that is all our business, not just those from certain cultures or backgrounds.
This is a pretty confronting conversation and there are things we talk about that will make many feel really uncomfortable. It’s such an important conversation and I feel honoured to sit with an outstanding human that is so crystal clear around her purpose in life...and it making a true dent in the world. I hope you enjoy this conversation with the glorious Kadija Gbla.

“I am passionate about educating people on the negative health effects of mould.”

My guest today has taught me so much these past years on an often confusing topic to navigate, that is - how do we be healthier in an environment that is full of toxins and misinformation? Today, the term "Low Tox" has become a common phrase to refer to a way of life and making choices and the gorgeous Alexx Stuart has been working in this space way before many of us even realised we needed to learn more about it.
Alexx is an educator, change agent, author, columnist, speaker and consultant at the forefront of a movement that’s non-judgmental and tough on the system that got us here.
Through both personal challenges in her health and an unveiling of the injustices in the food and chemical industries, Alexx felt called to provide unbiased, educational resources to guide people like her who were confused about what constituted a 'good choice' for their health and the planet. The education website Low Tox Life was born and today Alexx is a 12 times best-selling author of the fabulous book “Low Tox Life” and runs a thriving online education hub made up of several e-courses, a top-ranked podcast, recipes, articles and community action resources for an ever-growing community of people wanting to be healthier and make our planet happier.
Alexx’s style is to provide information in a factual form - but I love how she’s also really pragmatic and always says - start from where you are. It’s often overwhelming to bring change into your life - but any positive steps that help you be healthier are better than none. Please enjoy this educational episode with Alexx Stuart.
