Hosts Dr Sam Manger, Dr Ashlea Broomfield and Dr Rob Park sit down together for the very first time to introduce ourselves and briefly share our stories — from diverse backgrounds in general practice and medical education to our shared passion for advancing holistic, evidence-based care. Our trio discuss how our different experiences complement each other, what drew us into general practice, and what listeners can expect from future episodes — from deep-dives into clinical topics to candid reflections on the realities of primary care in Australia. This episode also marks the first of a series of intermittent reflective conversations, where we will revisit key themes from past podcasts, unpack lessons learned, and explore the future implications for healthcare, practice, and professional growth. Ever wondered what the President of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) actually does — or what it's like to carry the hopes (and frustrations) of 40,000 GPs on your shoulders? In this episode, GP and President of the RACGP Dr Michael Wright pulls back the curtain on college politics, policy negotiations, and the daily juggle between bureaucracy and real-world general practice. Hosted by Dr Rob Park and Dr Sam Manger, the conversation is sharp, honest, and refreshingly human — no spin, no fluff. Dr Wright doesn't shy away from the tough stuff: Medicare reform, GP burnout, the future of the profession, and how to keep general practice both sustainable and satisfying. It's a rare peek inside the mind of the college's leader — why he took the job, what keeps him up at night, and what gives him hope. If you're a GP who's ever muttered "what is the college even doing?", this one's for you. ... In a time when lettuce costs are skyrocketing and healthcare access is slipping out of reach for many, how can GPs continue to deliver excellent care with dwindling resources? In this compelling conversation, Dr. Rob Park speaks with Dr. Edmund Poliness — medical director of Wathaurong Aboriginal Medical Service and GP at The Living Room in Melbourne — about how to do more with less. Ed takes us inside the world of homeless healthcare, where the clinical gold standard often meets real-world constraints. From adapting chronic disease management to improvising physio with peer supports and printouts, this episode is packed with creative, practical ways to stretch your care further. You'll also hear about the importance of team-based care, warm handovers, and building trust with patients who face complex social and health barriers — all while staying grounded, compassionate, and resourceful. Whether you work in a city clinic or a regional practice, this episode is a must-listen for any GP navigating cost pressures and rising patient need. It's an inspiring look at how thoughtful medicine, community partnerships, and a little bit of creativity can still go a long way — even on a tight budget! ... How do you explain a blood test, a referral, or even shared decision-making when the entire healthcare system is foreign to your patient? In this deeply thoughtful and practical episode, Dr. Linny Phuong, paediatric infectious diseases physician and founder of the award-winning Water Well Project, joins Dr. Rob Park to explore how we as clinicians can better connect with patients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Drawing on personal stories, community experience, and years of frontline advocacy setting up and running The Water Well project, Linny shares how a simple, respectful conversation can build trust, shift health outcomes, and empower patients—especially those navigating an unfamiliar system. From chaotic first health sessions in church foyers to calm insights about interpreters, symbols, and the power of pausing, this episode is packed with memorable lessons and practical tips for any GP. Whether it's making sense of preventative health, navigating language barriers, or just knowing when a nod doesn't mean understanding, Linny offers real tools to make your consultations more inclusive, compassionate, and effective. Host Dr. Rob Park joins forces with the ever-curious Dr. Geoffrey Spurling to unpack the most important updates from the recent Therapeutic Guideline on Antibiotics. Think doxycycline for kids (yes, really), a new first-line antibiotic for UTIs (if they're even needed?!), and why you might need to start counting impetigo sores. Therapeutic Guidelines is that trusty clinical bible you scroll through when faced with an unusually infected body part, a suspicious rash, or a patient seemingly allergic to everything. But did you know they've just updated many of their guidelines? And that quite a few of these changes quietly flip long-held dogmas on their heads? It's nerdy, necessary, and surprisingly fascinating. With real-world relevance and refreshingly honest reflections (like how hard it is to dose a toddler—or remember anything after 20 years in practice), this episode will sharpen your prescribing, challenge your assumptions, and teach you how to grade diarrhoea in ways you never knew you needed. ... In his inaugural episode, host Dr Rob Park is joined by Dr Michael Bonning, GP, past NSW AMA President, media spokesperson and advocate to explore how we can answer difficult questions in the media with clarity, confidence, and care. From TikTok trends to political hot potatoes, today's patients are more curious—and sometimes more confused by the volume of information—than ever. With warmth and wisdom, Dr. Bonning shares practical strategies for staying on message, building trust, and turning confusion into connection. Whether it's a patient worried about vaccines or a journalist chasing a soundbite, this is a masterclass in calm, evidence-based communication—straight from someone who's done it all. ...
