Doug returns from a trip to Dynafit's headquarters in Germany and a visit to Oberalp's headquarters in Italy. We'll hear about the many ups and downs of riding in the Alps and Dolomites, and how the mountain culture in these regions has adopted the E-bike ethos. It's a debate that is still settling in the places Doug and Randy call home. The banter about bikes evolves into the rarefied realm of UCI World Champs and the upcoming World Cup on U.S. soil, based in Lake Placid. Outside of the Roaring Fork Valley, you might know of John Gaston as that dude from out of town who came into your local scene, under the radar, and cleaned up. He's been doing as much in the mountain bike and skimo racing scenes for well over a decade at all levels of sport. Sufferfest accolades include two podiums at the Leadville 100 and skimo stats that make the head spin: 13 skimo national championships and a most recent highlight placing 21st in the ISMF World Champs vertical race. In his spare time, along with a growing family, Gaston helps run Strafe outerwear. What we get on episode 127 is Gaston amped up. There are opinions on the skimo scene and gravel, as well as which bike you should or shouldn't take on your next gravel ride. Pete Swenson is our guest, and he's here to talk straight about the ski mountaineering racing scene. Swenson wears many hats, but for the Lycra set, he's most well-known for starting the COSMIC race series here in Colorado. Beyond his legacy of speed, Swenson has been a forthright advocate for the racing scene. And as you'll hear on the episode, he's thought quite a bit about how to sustainably grow the sport and make it a more viable option for recreational fitness skiers and those keen on besting a Strava segment. As we move into an Olympic year where ski mountaineering will be featured, Doug, Randy, and Swenson dream of bigger things to come, which you'll hear about on Episode 124. Doug takes a winter reprieve and heads south, way-way south, for some sunshine, pedaling, and horseriding—giddy up. Chile is today's primary destination. With a family trip planned to Chilean Patagonia, our resident fun hog, Doug, sheds light on the excellence and adventure of the region's freeform and manicured mountain bike riding. There's fjords and alpine and all the in-between to take in. But really, you came for the skiing or the potential for skiing. Although it's high summer in Chile, Doug takes a few strolls in the saddle and convinces himself that his next ski adventure should include wrangling horses, packing them up with a not-so-light load, and heading for the hills for some turn-making. Horse packing may be Doug's new thing, CCBC will not be carrying horse and tackle supplies anytime soon. On Episode 123 of the Totally Deep Podcast: Off to Patagonia, not Arizona. Traveling with a bike. The how-to get your bike under 50-pound trick. "I rode some serious horses." The outdoor rec economy in this Chilean region. Riding with the locals. As daylight shortens and we approach the winter solstice, some rejoicing and carol singing has been going down in some parts of the country. Ample snow is on the ground. Let the snow sliding begin. Randy and Doug connect in this episode to discuss a wide range of topics, from a new store opening in Silverthorne to ATK's entry into the hybrid binding scene. No matter what you have come for, you'll note a shift from cycling into the serene world of skiing uphill, clicking in, and seeking turns. For his part to make a quick pivot into winter, Doug picks up the ski touring mantle with some jaunts up Highland Bowl and fine early-season tour in Marble. Once exposed to the grind and endorphins of road cycling, cross country, and endurance mountain biking, he was hooked. Ultimately, Hill settled in the Roaring Fork Valley and began fixating on the skimo scene. What you'll find in this episode, and in Hill's advice, is a relative calmness when it comes to performing your best. There's talk of improving sport-specific economy by focusing on technique and taking a lengthy break— for up to three weeks—to refresh and reboot between your sport-specific seasons. Hill calls it the full well-being reset. As the snow falls in Colorado, it's time to scrape the skis and begin thinking about being the best version of yourself as you huff and puff uphill. Gear, technique, fashion, jargon, guests, and assorted spray from folks who know how to earn it in the backcountry. The world's best backcountry skiing podcast. Episode 118 features CCBC Carbondale store manager Nick Penzel and his take on the dad scene. To be clear, Nick is not a dad; he has one, and he has a specific take on dads in the front and backcountry. Trigger warning: dads, come with an open mind as Nick has some more revolutions around the sun until he too understands dad-realm. Another key factor is that Randy is a new dad. As a new dad, he's maybe feeling less spry than normal and looking for some good medicine—what he refers to as his dad-mod, not exactly a dad-bod. There's no leaving Doug out of the episode's commentary. What is true is that Doug is wiggling into a small Dynafit-branded Speed Jean. We can only imagine what these are: Part skimo outfit aprés attire? A cotton-Lycra blend? Doug is not a dad and isn't that slow, but he knows many dads who crush. We digress. Back to Nick. As a store manager, Nick gets to eye and fondle gear daily. You'll get his take on the gear for dads and non-dads alike in episode 118. On Episode 118 of the Totally Deep Podcast: Randy's epic: Driving through the night from TX. to CO. and acclimatizing. Group rides and shuttles—Doug finds clarity. The quick-hit Mexico volcano trip. It is time to not only raise the levels but also to get granular about the bike quiver. You decide if Doug throws shade at the gravel scene or is verbally fine-tuning his bike quiver to optimize what a gravel-road-mountain bike can be. And if clip-on time trial bars might save a few watts and seconds, maybe it is time to consider that gear add-on. Doug and Randy also explore the mertis of a highly structured training plan. The conclusion is to be kind on yourself, know your prioritities, and maybe consider dialing back the training, if not the levels. In Episode 109 of Totally Deep Podcast, Doug Stenclik and Randy Young of www.cripplecreekbc.com bring you the lowdown on the world of uphill and backcountry skiing and boarding. Gear, technique, fashion, jargon, guests, and assorted spray from folks who know how to earn it in the backcountry. The world's best backcountry skiing podcast. The wheelhouse of Totally Deep expands in this episode when Doug and Randy interview Mark Grotjahn, a noted American artist who also happens to backcountry ski. Or, maybe, for TDP purposes, we have a backcountry skier who happens to be an artist. No matter, Grothjahn brings a unique and welcome perspective to the ski scene that embodies his broad vision of seeing the world. Gagosian.com writes about his art, "Grotjahn combines gesture and geometry with abstraction and figuration in visually dynamic paintings, sculptures, and works on paper. Each of his series reflects a range of art-historical influences and unfolds in almost obsessive permutations." You can learn more about Grotjahn and his art here. But the story doesn't end there. Grotjahn, a powder snow lover, also has a soft spot for DPS skis. More on that in a bit. Recently, Grtotjahn opened an exhibit titled Backcountry. "In Backcountry, he continues to draw inspiration from rural landscapes and his ski touring and fly-fishing adventures in the backcountry of western Colorado," writes Gagosian.com. Along with the exhibit, Cripple Creek Backcountry, Grotjahn, and DPS released a limited edition series of skis featuring Grotjahn's art on the topsheets: the new ski is known as the Mark Grotjahn DPS 50 Kitchens Ski. This also marks the release of a new DPS powder ski, the Kaizen 112. On Episode 109 of the Totally Deep Podcast: Racecourse setting. The DPS/Grotjahn creation. Skinning vs Sorels: skinning wins.
