Duncan Welgemoed has been variously described as part mythical beast, part troublemaker and part conversation starter. The part they left out was that he is the perfect guest for Food Bytes with Sarah Patterson. Duncan takes us through his culinary journey from South Africa to London then South Australia and introduces us to his stunning BBQ book called Cooking with Fire (Affirm Press). The dishes are spectacular and, teamed with Duncan's down to earth style, it makes for a totally entertaining and enriching podcast experience. It is our pleasure and privilege to have one of the greatest cricketers of all time on the first proper episode for 2026, and 'proper' is the correct term, as our guest is Lord Ian Botham of Ravensworth in the County of North Yorkshire, OBE. But he happily answers to 'Beefy.' A passionate winemaker, we discover more about his range of Sir Ian Botham Wines and how hands-on he is in every facet of the business. Naturally, cricket did come up and Beefy shared some strong opinions about the game and the modern players, as well as a scary encounter with our own Mervyn Gregory Hughes in the NT. That isn't the most frightening revelation, though, as his Lordship details his love affair with the Collingwood Football Club. It's a pub grub Food Poll to kick off 2026. What is your favourite pub meal ... steak, burger parma or fish and chips? As we sharpen our Ginsus in preparation for a slashing start to the new year, here we take a brief moment to reflect on some of the incredible people who joined us in 2025. International television icon Alison Arngrim shared stories of the role that changed her life - playing Nellie Oleson on Little House on the Prairie. She also served us up a very special scrambled egg tip. Steph de Sousa told us about her MasterChef experiences and how keeping the kitchen as a happy, simple and fun place isn't that hard. What a revelation she was. Despite not getting the accolades he thinks he deserves for his kitchen prowess, former Australian cricketer Simon O'Donnell regailed us with his thoughts on the mighty Brussels sprout and what might have been in his sucessful acting career. And the final words for 2025 involve Sooshi Mango, meat pies, tinned spaghetti and Hawaiian pizza. What could go wrong? As the curtain closes on 2025, a chance to revisit some of the fabulous people we have had on the show this year - and it's a goody bag of guests to delight. International celeb chef Curtis Stone fondly remembers his early days in the kitchen and its special family connection. Dr.Joanna McMillan blue ticked all the great guest boxes, bonding with Sarah over a can of mackerel and talking protein and questionable food diaries. The irrepressible Craig Bennett shared some hilarious moments from his adventures as a globetrotting entertainment reporter. Dessert maestro Adriano Zumbo pops in with a surprising kitchen tip - and don't miss multi-media star Virginia Trioli's coffee confession. The Food Poll will return in 2026 and your suggestions are welcome via our social media platforms. Happy New Year. Have fun and stay safe. If, like us, you are about to Ho Ho Ho into a food-filled Christmas, have we got some helpful hints to share thanks to our guest this week, Brendan Pang. You will remember Brendan from his MasterChef days and as well as sharing some memories from that life-changing experience, he gives us the rundown on having a prawn-filled Christmas feast. Everything from buying and peeling (including the dreaded the poop chute) to some beautiful dishes to prepare for the family. Brendan also gives us some very handy and timely rice cooking tips. The Food Poll is another festive-inspired sweet treat showdown. Are you going shortbread or gingerbread? Justine Schofield is one of those people who has the rare gift of being able to light up a room with her presence, so it is little wonder she has gone from MasterChef contestant to being one of the most popular presenters on television. Justine returns to Food Bytes with stories from her latest television adventure, taking in the sights, lights and culinary delights of Hong Kong. And the delights are many, from jet fuelled street food and cocktails 108 floors up to a sweet treat called a pineapple bun that contains no actual pineapple. Justine also shares her Christmas plans and has a tip to help get you through the big day. The Food Poll is unashamedly festive and sweet. Don't count the calories, vote with your drooling tastebuds for either Chocolate Ripple cake or trifle. Justine's latest show Hong Kong Gourmet is streaming on SBS on Demand. John Silvester is an award-winning journalist, author and multi media presenter who has brought the biggest crime stories of our generation to readers, viewers and listeners across the country, and continues to do so. The latest is the case that catapulted the regional Victorian town of Korumburra onto the world stage. Here, John offers his insight into The Death Cap Murders on Stan, a three part expose into the criminal case against Erin Patterson. A murder trial that transfixed, shocked and captivated attention around the globe. As well as the inside story on the Death Cap trial, John shares his own colourful story as a journalist, from starting out on police rounds to drinking coffee and writing books with some of Australia's most notorious gangland figures like 'Chopper' Read and Carl Williams. On a lighter note, it is a festive Food Poll, pitting two of the absolute Christmas favourites, snout to snood. What is your yuletide fancy - ham or turkey? Silvie Paladino's name is synonymous with Christmas and Carols by Candlelight and she certainly brings the joy and spirit of the festive season to the show this week. As Silvie prepares for a slew of Christmas concerts and her 27th appearance at Melbourne's iconic Christmas Eve spectacular, she talks about her family, her career and what is special to her at this time of year. The Food Poll this week is a hard one, quite literally: Is it a yay or a nay for the humble hard-boiled egg? Restaurateur, author, chef and seasoned television presenter Shane Delia returns to Food Bytes to tell us about his latest adventure, a six part series for SBS Food, tapping into his Maltese heritage. Shane's passion for the cuisine, produce, people and places of his ancestral homeland shines through with his insights into everything from sweet treats to Christmas fare. And rather than a kitchen or cooking tip, Shane shares an AFL footy tip for 2026. The reaction to our Food Poll this week was off the charts and the battle for supremacy was akin to a heavyweight title fight as we crown the top flyer from the deep fryer ... it's potato cakes/scallops up against chips. Acclaimed Australian actor Sandy Gore has graced our screens, stages and airwaves for many years in a stunning career that continues today. Whether it be Kay White in Prisoner, Mother Ambrose in Brides of Christ or her roles in dozens of theatrical productions, Sandy has a presence few possess and many would envy. Sandy is also very handy in the kitchen and shares her delicious Chinese chicken salad recipe with us, plus a cooking tip to ensure your chicken breasts are juicy, not dry! Talk about multi-talented. The Food Poll this week unwraps an eternal confectionery favourite for devouring or dismissing. Minties: What side of the fence do you sit on - the yays or the nays? George Donikian is a uniquely talented man who has packed a lot into his 50 year media career, as you will discover in this week's episode. George's cavalcade of colourful life experiences is like the joy of opening a box of Cadbury Favourites. One minute, it's a boost to Far North Queensland, then a twirl around the New South Wales Central Coast then our Turkish speaking delight is fronting news on SBS! Only the names have been changed to protect the various shades of George. The food component of this chat is every bit as exotic as George's media journey. Fasten your seat belts, it's a fun-packed adventure. The Food Poll this week opens a canape of crustaceans and it is snot for the faint hearted. Break out the Jatz and Savoys, slide on a tinned smoked oyster and swear on a stack of Bibles whether you are for or against this party starter from back in the day. Swanee has been belting out rock classics since he was a wee laddie growing up in Glasgow. As an elder of the hit making Swan/Barnes gene pool, Swanee has lived life to the fullest, but there are some insights he rarely gets a chance to share, like his days as an army chef and pastry cook, his kitchen surprises and secrets for his favourite curries and much-loved trifle. We also hear the back story to his latest musical masterpiece, a duets album called Believe, where a dream comes true and Swanee records with his brothers Jimmy and Alan Barnes for the first time ever. Swanee is not only a great singer, he is a larrikin, a man of the people and loved and respected across the music industry. The names might not sound very appertising but the memories they bring are like no other. In the Food Poll this week, the Razz, Glug and the Sunny Boy line up in all their frozen glory, vying for the title of favourite frozen pyramid of the past. Simon O'Donnell has quite the CV. Former Australian cricket champion, St. Kilda footballer, multi-media personality and leading racehorse owner and breeder. And with the release of this episode of Food Bytes with Sarah Patterson, he becomes self-appointed Brussels Sprouts Ambassador to the World. That dry O'Donnell sense of humour shines through this chat with Sarah and Kevin as Simon also names the worst vegetable ever, shares his thoughts on condiments, looks back on his illustrious sporting career and adds some spice to his days in front of the cameras. The Food Poll this week features a culinary classic - the Quiche Lorraine. Is it a trumped up French tart or an timeless taste treat? It certainly evokes some wonderful, nostalgic memories for our It's Showtime guest Jen Seyderhelm, who shares her family secret to the perfect 'Quiche Jen Lorraine.' She also shares some insider tips for the home baker from an adventurous ten layer cake to the humble scone. The Food Poll this week is a dentist's delight as we pit humbugs against fruit rock candy. Western Bulldogs star Adam Treloar is a keen foodie and as you will discover, he is as dextrous in the kitchen as he has been on the footy field over the course of his 258 AFL games. Whether it's his slow cooked satay chicken or a secret sweet treat that he has created, Adam can talk the talk and whisk the fork, though his most favourite food will surprise. The Food Poll this week involves a curious dessert for the ages and from the ages, with its origins dating as far back as 14th century. Are you a yay or a nay for rice pudding? Little House on the Prairie was a worldwide television phenomenon and its stars became household names. Think Michael Landon, Melissa Gilbert and our guest this week, Alison Arngrim. Alison played the spoiled, snobbish bully Nellie Oleson. Not exactly the most likeable character on the show, but certainly one of most most talked about. Here, Alison shares her incredible story of getting the part, how it changed her life - both then and now - and insights from her experiences of being on such a massive hit television show. Alison loves the kitchen and has a cookbook in the works as well as a treasure trove of YouTube cooking videos, so we also get some very handy kitchen tips from the former restaurateur of Walnut Grove! Our Food Poll is more British in origin. We ask if the chip butty takes your fancy. Back in the day, our guest this week Ian Rawlings played Australian television's most notorious bad boy come playboy Wayne Hamilton in the long-running soapie Sons and Daughters, and he loved every minute of it. As Ian tells Sarah and Kevin, nothing was off limits for Wayne, but Ian was also having the time of his life acting alongside the likes of Tom Richards, Rowena Wallace, Brian Blain and Leila Hayes. Ian updates us on his life today, his signature dish and how his time on Neighbours as Phillip Martin allowed for his sweet tooth to be indulged. The Food Poll heads down the biscuit aisle again as we pit two Arnotts cream favourites against each other, vying for the Tea Cup.
