One of the world's most common artificial sweeteners is set to be declared a possible carcinogen. More research is needed to investigate a potential link between the common sweetener aspartame and cancer; however the cancer-research arm of the World Health Organization (WHO) has classified the low-calorie sweetener aspartame as "possibly carcinogenic." Aspartame is an artificial (chemical) sweetener widely used in various food and beverage products since the 1980s, including diet drinks, chewing gum, gelatin, ice cream, yogurt, breakfast cereal, toothpaste and medications such as cough drops and chewable vitamins. The assessments of aspartame have indicated that, while safety is not a major concern at the doses which are commonly used, potential effects have been described that need to be investigated by more and better studies. Parents have transformed their grief into action when advocating for the Stop Tip-overs of Unstable, Risky Dressers on Youth (STURDY) Act, which seeks to prevent child injuries and deaths from falling furniture. The safety triad - consumers, corporations, and government regulators - agree that the STURDY Act will result in a robust safety standard that will reduce furniture tip-overs and improve protections for small children. The new legislation will require the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to set mandatory safety standards for all dressers and similar products made or sold in the U.S. This is a long overdue solution to an easily fixable problem: On average 22,500 hospital emergency visits are attributed to tip-overs per year (2018-2020). Frequent use of hair straighteners may pose an increased risk of cancer, especially among Black women. A recent study found that women who reported regular use of hair straightening products were more than twice as likely to develop uterine cancer than women who did not. Scientists are uncovering new details about the connection between using hair straightening products, such as chemical relaxers and pressing products, and an increased risk of cancer in women. Researchers at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) reported an increased risk of hormone-related cancers in people who use hair straightening chemicals, which are often Black women. As a result, Black women may be disproportionately affected. If consumers had known all those years ago from a warning on the box to say this product could cause cancer, they likely wouldn't have used it. Women have filed federal lawsuits against companies who manufacture these products, alleging that chemicals in the companies’ hair products caused them to develop uterine cancer or other severe health effects. The women in the suit said they were unaware that the use of chemical hair straighteners had put them at an increased risk of cancer until the release of the NIH study. There was never anything on the products' packaging, their lawsuits allege, indicating that normal use of the products could cause them to develop uterine fibroids or breast or uterine cancer. Manufacturers and corporations often do not have our best interests at heart. About 47 million U.S. households use such appliances, according to the federal Energy Information Administration. A recent study published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology found at least 12 hazardous air pollutants emitted from gas stoves in California, including benzene — a chemical known to cause cancer in some people. The researchers behind the study — a group from the nonprofit energy research institute PSE Healthy Energy — took gas samples from 159 residential stoves in 16 counties throughout California.
