Welcome back everyone. We are doing something a little bit different today. I have with me here in person- Dr. Basil Kahwash, who is a Vanderbilt physician in the area of allergies and immunology.
I've gotten to know Dr. Basil through clubhouse and he's a really thoughtful person. I really appreciate his perspective and I'm grateful to have him on the show.
As your host, I feel a responsibility to show you all different types of approaches to healing and this includes traditional medicine. If you've been listening from the beginning you know that I left traditional medicine both in practice and as a patient, because it didn't solve my problem. But oh my goodness who am I to say that it won't work for you?
It didn't work for me, because it approached my issue as a one-size fits all and I'm not going to do that to you and only show you functional medicine perspectives, because healing is not a one-size fits all. I would be doing you a disservice if I did that. And traditional medicine has a lot of good qualities- I even recommend it to my clients in certain cases, when I think medication is their best option.
I also want to encourage you to befriend people who think differently than you. That's how we grow. That's how release ourselves of a fixed mindset and transition to a growth mindset.
Now, this is clearly a topic y'all care about, because I asked you all if you have any questions for Dr. Basil, and y'all sent me so many questions that I had to break them down into themes and we are going to start basic.

Hello everyone and welcome back to Revolutionary Health. I am your host Stephanie Center. Today we are going to dive into the topic of adrenal fatigue with FDN founder Reed Davis.

What I really like about Reed's program is it teaches you how to not miss the forest for the trees. And what do I mean by that? I mean that often times practitioners focus too much on symptoms. And what do we know about symptoms? They are the last thing to occur in a disease process. Which means that many different things can contribute to a symptom. This is why I am cautious about chasing after symptoms.
To give you an example. Let's look at migraines. A migraine can be caused by many things. If you chase after the symptom you might miss the root cause.
To be just totally transparent- I don't agree with everything Reed says. I agree with him more than I disagree with him. I think it's healthy to have your own opinions and to value ideas from other people.

Have you ever changed your opinion on something?
Have you ever felt so strongly about something that you were so wrong about?
It's humbling to admit when we are wrong. It's uncomfortable. I have so much more respect for people who admit that they get it wrong sometimes.
It's our human right to be wrong and imperfect.
Character is how we handle being wrong.
For me personally, I like to be wrong in public. Yep. I think that's my favorite. Getting it wrong with an audience. You know- Go big or go home.
My very first podcast episode was dead wrong. It had bad information. I removed it. You can't even download it anymore. Why? Because I was wrong!!! And I've made a commitment to you to give you my best. Of course, I didn't know it was wrong at the time, which is why I released it in the first place. Mistake, meet grace.
In all seriousness, as we learn and grow, our opinions SHOULD change. That means we are learning, right?
Here's another way to think about this: What's something that you know now that you wish you would have known "back then"?
I think about this question a lot.

Let's talk about acne.
This isn't an old problem.
Acne has been around for hundreds of years.
This NIH article dates acne back to the 16th century.
What does that tell you about acne?
It's been a problem for a long time and we haven't solved it yet.
If we had, then perhaps it wouldn't impact 50 million Americans each year (American Academy of Dermatology Association).
How many of you have seen a dermatologist about acne?

What were their solutions for you?

💊Topical creams to dry out your skin?
💊Antibiotics to kill bacteria?
💊Hormonal birth control to "balance" your hormones?

Questions to ask yourself:
What if your acne wasn't caused by oily skin or access androgens? Did anyone measure how you metabolize testosterone before prescribing you medication? Probably not.
Is it possible for antibiotics to exacerbate acne by killing both good and opportunistic bacteria in your gut?
Does hormonal birth control actually "balance" our hormones? Probably not. Remember HBC contains synthetic forms of hormones, because pharmaceutical companies cannot patent something that is naturally occurring.
Did your doctor explain to you the connection between vitamin A (accutane) consumption and liver health? When you took accutane, you had to get your liver enzymes measured regularly, right? That's because vitamin A impacts cytochrome P450 function in your liver which is responsible for oxidizing excess retinol (vitamin A precursor). This impacts how you metabolize and use iron, copper, and hormone D (also marketed as vitamin D). Did your doctor recommend taking vitamin E, vitamin K, and taurine in conjunction with accutane? Probably not.
Today we are taking a different look at acne.
I'm going to encourage you to listen with an open mind.

Natalie Palomino is a Master Stylist, Clean Hair Care Expert and Founder of North Authentic, a conscious hair care company.
