Some people feel that work-life balance is not achievable, that it's a myth, and that you can't really have it if you want to get ahead. Tune in this week for Reshad's thoughts on how we can place a higher importance on this issue and why it's needed. Leadership development is, too often, more like a "choose-your-own-adventure" novel than a guided journey. Although personal responsibility is important, we as leaders, need to be paying attention to how we are growing our people. Handing someone the keys to the building and a title just isn't good enough, we need to be great guides. The Weekly Leadership Experience will be on break until September 6th. You might not usually think of LOVE as an essential ingredient in successful business or leadership, but it plays a bigger role than you think. Love, the verb, has to do with your disposition towards other people and how you treat them. Building a business culture and your leadership based on love has the potential for phenomenal results. Drawing on his 25+ years of experience as CEO of major corporations, Joel Manby wrote LoveWorks detailing how to integrate “love the verb” into the leadership ethos and philosophy of any organization. This servant leadership approach has been systematically proven to transform organizations through lower turnover, higher employee engagement, more satisfied customers, and stronger profits. It's no secret that change is difficult. Everyone wants change, no one wants TO change, and even fewer people want to LEAD change. If that's not enough, most change is met with resistance, obstacles, buried artifacts, and a leader's own challenges with influence. So how do we overcome these challenges and effectively lead and influence change? Nancy Murphy, Founder & President of CSR Communications, shares how we can uncover the artifacts that may be impeding change, how we can draw on the four types of influence, and how to address resistance. Time management and productivity have been hot topics for a long time. The issue is that it tends to degenerate into a discussion on how you can do more "stuff." Instead, the focus needs to be on doing the IMPORTANT stuff. Integrity and honesty are consistently rated amongst the most desirable traits for a leader to have. People want to know that their leaders are trustworthy, do what they say they will do and will do the right thing. However, have you ever thought that someone can do the wrong thing and still be a person of integrity? Listen to this episode for a deep dive into integrity, what it actually is, and why we, as leaders, need to check in with our stand on integrity more often. Great conversation on diversity in the workplace and how we can address our own similarity bias. I like the point made that we can ask the question of how to do or be better, but we need to be prepared that the answer could hurt. I think this can be likened to growing pains; it hurts, but it's part of developing as a person and leader.
Great discussion and quite thought provoking. My takeaway is that being a leader does not necessarily mean you need to be the smartest person in the room. A leader doesn't need to be the one solving all the problems; they should create an environment and culture that encourages team members to devise solutions, think outside the box, become subject matter experts known to the broader business.
Great episode! I'm definitely a fan of integrating creativity in the workplace, it's a powerful tool to drive engagement and increase workplace morale. I think it's vital for businesses to have diversity in how they conduct their business, deal with customers as well as employees and creative expression definitely fits the bill.
Welcome back! Great way to start up again after a break, talking about work-life balance. This is so important for employees and employers to integrate into the values and culture of a workplace. It's vital to the health and well-being of individuals and their attitude towards their work. Looking forward to the next episode!
Although I haven't specifically heard of heart based leadership, I definitely agree with the principles. It's important to have compassion and empathy and to know what that looks like when you have to have tough conversations. I think the heart is left out of so much in how people conduct themselves, either as leaders or as team members. It's important for us all to acknowledge that we're just as human as anyone else in the business and we all need compassion.
Very thought provoking conversation on this episode. So many people are seeking that 'purpose' that will define them and what they do; but if your purpose no longer gives you satisfaction, fulfilment or energy, is it still your purpose? Maybe your purpose can change, maybe you define your purpose, not the other way around. Definitely a challenging concept, but an important one.
Great points about making time, Reshad. Effective time management can be quite difficult for some people to master but it's a very valuable skill to have, both professionally and privately.
This is a great conversation on the importance of what you think or believe, whether about yourself or others. The idea of the self-fulfilling prophecy is important in making us aware that, if we think negatively about ourselves, others or, a situation, that negativity can affect the outcome and the people involved. This is why it's important to uplift yourself and others as that can provide motivation and confidence in oneself and situations. Tying this into how we work with others or how we lead can help us be more constructive in conversations and help us find solutions in the cases where something or someone has failed.
great conversation this week with Leslie. I liked what she said about how you can't, or shouldn't, force someone to change because then they're not bringing their best selves to the conversation. Great talk about how fear culture doesn't work and how being your authentic self is really going to uncover your potential in work and life.
Really great discussion, I liked Shawn's point about wanting people to be return customers, not because of any charitable work you do, but because you provide a quality product/service. Like the quote about not "baking bread with indifference". People won't want a product or service that you don't believe in and out effort into.
Loved the conversation this week. Great points from Carolene around how others experience your leadership, making genuine connections with people, especially in your team, and focusing on how you want your customer to feel after they have interacted with you and your business.
Great Q&A episode this week. I really agree with your point that leadership isn't something you have to wait until you have all the training or knowledge for. The most important lessons of leadership aren't learner until you're in the position. I definitely agree as well that there are fundamentals of leadership that don't change, like being about the people as you said, empowering others, listening, being available to the people you lead; these traits, and so many more, are very core to any leadership role. Thanks for the great discussion.
This was a really great episode, you can definitely hear how passionate you both are about servant leadership. Definitely agree on the line "if you don't love yourself, how can you love anyone else". It's important that we look after ourselves or we won't have anything to give to others.
Really good conversation today. Thanks to Reshad and Dave for being so open about depression and mental health, it's an important topic that can be difficult to discuss due to the stigma thats still associated with it. It's important to recognise that mental wellbeing is just as important as physical wellbeing and it's something we all deal with. Great points about how these conversations can factor into the work environment and how they can build trust within a team.
Very interesting conversation this week around connection and emotional regulation. It's very important to maintain connection with others in our increasingly disconnected world and being able to regulate ourselves and our emotions is key to maintaining good relationships. Loved the vibrant energy Jodie brought to the discussion.
Great topic this week on growth and development. I had to go back and listen to it again just to let it sink in. Its definitely important to always continue growing, however that may look for each person. Without growth or forward movement, we can become stuck or stagnant, which is not conducive to leading people.
Very interesting conversation this week around innovation. Quite a challenging perspective in the question "how can I get myself fired today?". I guess this is about being willing to take risks in your work and not just focus on keeping your employment. Maybe there's an idea you have to improve efficiency and it's worth trying to put it into practice. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't, but it's worth taking the risk.
Really good tips around motivation and improving morale in your team; great point about knowing your people and how they like to be recognised or rewarded. Love the quote "manage things, lead people" could not agree more. Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions, keep it up.
I really enjoyed this week's episode and find Lizzy's story very inspiring. I strongly agree on the points made about teaching financial literacy skills to youth/young adults as it's a critical skill that is too often overlooked.
Love the Q&A style episode this week and look forward to future installments. It was really good to listen to your answers, I especially appreciate the advice around showing yourself the same compassion you would give to others. Very important.
