Marlborough: Learning Together at a Distance

Join us for a lively conversation with two Marlborough Alumnae Council award winners for 2020, author and columnist Annabel Schwedes Monaghan '87 and communications director/campaign staffer Maya Humes '10. Annabel and Maya share how they each discovered the path to a fulfilling and successful career, as well as how their lives have been affected by the pandemic.

Dr. Atwell speaks with Katie '20, Bria '21, Candace '21, Ava, '21, and Sofia '22 about their experiences with the Black Lives Matter protests in Los Angeles, as students of color and as white allies, and how what they learned at the protests might apply to the Marlborough community's ongoing conversations about racism, equity and inclusion.

Pamela Wright, Dean of Social Justice, and Javier Espinoza, Community Partnership Program Head, describe how their department is working to embed social justice into the heart of a Marlborough education, supporting students on the path to awareness, empathy and activism. Tune in to hear more about the range of programs and opportunities that their department offers, including the Capstone in Social Justice and a new anti-racist discussion group this summer for white students who want to learn to become better allies. Ms. Wright, Mr. Espinoza and Dr. Atwell also discuss the potential for seismic societal change to arise from the intersection of Black Lives Matter and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Siblings Ellie '21 and Gracie '17 (Princeton '21) share what it's like for three different generations to be back at home together - all on the same wifi! Ellie and Gracie also compare notes on taking AP exams and writing research papers during quarantine, and we hear how Marlborough Ensemble Theater (MET) retooled during the pandemic.

Zoe '22, Lucy '22 and Harrison '22 describe how and why they founded Concerts4COVID, which puts on virtual concerts by local and national musicians to raise money for non-profit organizations. Listen to learn how you can get involved - more concerts coming this summer!

Dr. Atwell talks with Tara '20, this year's Marlborough all-school president, and Tommie '21, next year's all-school president, to learn how they're trying to cultivate school spirit and community and what they believe student leadership entails right now. Tommie also reveals why she has a cardboard cutout of Danny DeVito!

Best friends, soccer athletes and Honors Research students Miya '20 and Kaelyn '20 share what it's like for their families to quarantine together. They also offer tips for prospective college athletes about how to manage the recruitment process, and how they're completing their Marlborough Honors Research projects during the pandemic.
