Higher education is supposed to be a place where truth is pursued, and worldviews are shaped in an atmosphere of intellectual freedom and open dialogue. Unfortunately, this is not the case in our public universities. A recent study reveals a pervasive culture of self-censorship fueled by fear of social ostracism and academic penalty. The result is an ideological conformity which stifles true intellectual freedom while graduating students who have had to sell their souls for academic survival.
It has been said, "Politics is downstream of culture." In other words, if you want to avoid the endless cycles of legislative squabbles, focus on the reforming the culture shaping institutions which form the hearts and minds of our people. Legislation is critically important, but lasting change comes through institutional reformation. This is exactly what President Trump as been doing. He's changing the leadership of the Kennedy Center and demanding a comprehensive review of Smithsonian museums to reflect the enduring values that define the American story while removing partisan narratives which seek to divide us as Americans.
