Hosted by Emad Rahim, join our guest speakers Mr. Todd Reid and Shanelle R. Benson Reid who are betting on themselves, and on Syracuse New York as a married couple. They are on a mission to build Syracuse’s Black Wall Street by tackling one project after another. Each is accomplished independently, but together they are a force. The family structure of African Americans has long been a matter of national public policy interest. A 1965 report by Daniel Patrick Moynihan, known as The Moynihan Report, examined the link between black poverty and family structure. It hypothesized that the destruction of the Black nuclear family structure would hinder further progress toward economic and political equality. Data from U.S. Census reports reveal that between 1880 and 1960, married households consisting of two-parent homes were the most widespread form of African-American family structures. Although the most popular, married households decreased over this time period. Single-parent homes, on the other hand, remained relatively stable until 1960; when they rose dramatically. In the Harlem neighborhood of New York City in 1925, 85 percent of kin-related Black households had two parents. When Moynihan wrote in 1965 on the coming destruction of the Black family, the out-of-wedlock birth rate was 25% among Blacks. In 1991, 68% of Black children were born outside of marriage. In 2011, 72% of Black babies were born to unmarried mothers. In 2015, 77% of Black babies were born to unmarried mothers. Among all newlyweds: 18.0% of Black Americans in 2015 married non-Black spouses 24% of all Black male newlyweds in 2015 married outside their race, compared with 12% of Black female newlyweds. Although in general, youths raised in two-parent families are less likely to live in poverty, black youths raised by both biological parents are still three times more likely to live in poverty than are their white peers. Additionally, black two-parent families have half the wealth of white two-parent families. So, many of the expected economic benefits of marriage and the two-parent family are not equally available to black children.

You might not have Jay Z money, but you can certainly think like him when it comes to investment and saving for your future. During times like this, you really understand the phrase "Money is Power." Consider that Black families are 35% less likely to invest in the stock market, average banking account is around $7k for the middle class (that is saving & checking combined with two working parents), the majority have less than a $1,000 cash saved, and $19,000 average in 401k for two working parents income (60% do not have a 401k or IRA). We can see how generational poverty continues to develop as the wealth gap increases. This is why it's important to have a focused discussion about wealth building with marginalized communities. Join us on June 11, 2020, with our guest speakers Emad Rahim and Andre Williams to unpack best practices in investment, savings, and legacy planning. - Big Bank Take Little Bank.
