Even the most seasoned RVers know — things will go wrong eventually. In this episode, Kenny and Sean share their personal stories of roadside disasters, mechanical failures, and how they handled them without losing their cool (well, mostly).
Kenny recounts his recent breakdown that left his RV immobile after a locked brake caliper destroyed his rear axle. Sean chimes in with his own tales of mishaps and misadventures from the road. Together, they dive into what it really takes to stay calm, safe, and sane when your home on wheels decides to quit rolling.
Topics Covered:
What happened during Kenny’s major brake failure and tow experience
Sean’s stories of unexpected mechanical breakdowns
How to safely manage roadside emergencies
Why patience, humor, and preparation are key to surviving RV life
Key Takeaway:RVing isn’t about if something will go wrong — it’s about how you handle it when it does. From breakdowns to busted axles, these are the moments that test your resolve and remind you why community, preparation, and flexibility matter most.

In this episode of Beyond the Wheel, Kenny and Sean dive into a growing trend that’s reshaping RV life: people living full-time in RVs without traveling. The image of the open road is what we all think of when we picture RV life, but for hundreds of thousands of people, that’s not the reality anymore.
Since 2021, the number of Americans living full-time in RVs has nearly doubled — climbing from about 240,000 to close to half a million. For some, it’s a smart financial move in a housing market that’s gone off the rails. For others, it’s a lifestyle choice built around simplicity, minimalism, or just staying close to work or family.
Kenny and Sean break down why so many are choosing to stay put, what life actually looks like in a stationary RV, and how the RV industry might adapt to serve this growing community.
The RV lifestyle is evolving. It’s not just about freedom of the road anymore — it’s about freedom from crushing housing costs. Whether it’s by choice or necessity, stationary RV living is here to stay, and it’s reshaping what “RV life” really means.

Brett shares why low voltage is the silent killer of modern RVs, how surge protection really works, and what makes Hughes’ products stand out—like Bluetooth monitoring, replaceable modules, and their soon-to-launch all-in-one power center.
If you’ve ever wondered whether you really need both a surge protector and a voltage booster, or if you’ve assumed your current gear is “good enough,” this episode will change your thinking—and maybe save you thousands in repairs.
Key Topics Covered:
Brett’s hands-on role and how Hughes Autoformers has grown since 2019
The origin story of the Hughes Autoformer voltage booster
What surge protectors actually do—and don’t do

The difference between the Watchdog surge protector and the Autoformer
What the new Watchdog Power Center will combine into one device
How Hughes’ replaceable surge modules save you money over time
Understanding joules, MOVs, and what happens when lightning strikes
How to properly match your surge protector to your RV’s amperage
Real-world examples of RV damage from poor power quality
How the Hughes app helps monitor real-time voltage, frequency, and power draw
Upcoming innovations and how customer feedback drives product design
Listen If:
You’ve ever plugged into a sketchy RV pedestal
You thought your surge protector shuts off power (spoiler: not always)
You’re unsure if you need a voltage booster
You want tech that helps you prevent power damage before it happens

Welcome to this month’s episode of Drivers Edition, where we’re diving into the latest in the world of overlanding, RVs, and camping. We’ve got plenty of exciting news, from events to industry updates, and even a campground spotlight. Here’s a breakdown of what’s covered in today’s show.
Overland Expo SoCal Recap
We talk about the Overland Expo SoCal experience held in Costa Mesa, California, where we saw 19,500 attendees over a two-day period and 303 vendors. The show was a huge success, with many vendors already securing spots for next year.
One downside? A smaller camping area compared to other Overland Expos, but overall, the event exceeded expectations. Many exhibitors praised the high engagement, strong sales, and great turnout, with 70% of attendees being first-timers.
Exciting news: Kenny will be attending every Overland Expo this year and will be located at the Winnebago booth. Be sure to stop by and say hello!
Upcoming Event: Sea Otter Classic
Kenny will also be at the Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, California, from April 10th to 13th at the WeatherTech Raceway. It’s a fun mix of biking and camping, and I’ll be working at the Winnebago booth again—so don’t miss it!
RV Industry Update
RV shipments have seen a 6% increase compared to February 2024, with a significant jump in towable RVs, although motorhome shipments are down. We’ll dive into the latest numbers and what they mean for the RV industry.
Camping Season News
Camping season is on the horizon, and we’ve got some updates on campsites. The U.S. Forest Service offers 4,000 campsites, and the Corps of Engineers has 425 in Pennsylvania. However, there are some troubling updates from Yosemite National Park, including a halt in reservations and staff layoffs. We’ll cover how these changes might affect your summer camping plans.
Canadian RVers Rethinking US
Many Canadian RVers are rethinking their southern trips due to rising costs and trade tensions between Canada and the U.S. We’ll talk about how these factors are impacting the RV travel market for Canadian retirees, including new U.S. policies set to go into effect soon.
Is Lazydays RV Going Out of Business?
There’s been a lot of buzz around Lazydays RV’s recent restructuring. With Camping World purchasing five of their locations, we break down what’s really happening with the company and how they’re undergoing a major rebranding campaign.
Campspot’s Best Campground of the Year: Verde Ranch RV Resort
If you’re looking for a great campground to check out this spring, we’ve got the winner of Campspot’s Best Campground of the Year Award – Verde Ranch RV Resort in Verde, AZ. We dive into what makes this Arizona resort stand out, from stunning red rock landscapes to its great amenities and discounts for weekly stays.

Welcome, all, and thank you for joining us today for this very special 200th episode! It’s hard to believe we’ve already reached 200 episodes—time really does fly! Over the years, we’ve had some big names from the RV industry, as well as small startups and everything in between. Today, we’ll be looking back at some of our favorite episodes and moments from the show.
Interview with KOA CEO Toby O’Rourke
We were at the RVX Show in Salt Lake City, sitting on the floor to record the episode. Since our podcast offers a behind-the-scenes look at the RV industry, let me share a bit more about why this episode is so special. Typically, we send our guests questions in advance to help them feel at ease, but for this interview with Toby from KOA, we went completely off-the-cuff. There were no prepared questions, and she answered everything without hesitation. The episode is packed with valuable insights into the company. Listen here.
First Live Show from FMCA in Tucson, Arizona
Just a couple of years into the show, FMCA invited us to perform a live version of our podcast at one of their conventions. This was huge for us—it got us in front of an audience for the first time and pushed us out of our comfort zone. This would not be the last live show we did for FMCA, in fact, they made our top list twice on this episode alone for different reasons. Listen here.
First Adventure Genie Interview with CEO Scott Lengel
This was during the early days of AI making waves, and we had Scott on to talk about his company at a pivotal time. Scott did an amazing job addressing questions and tackling concerns about AI. Listen here.
Interview with Brett Davis, CEO of National Indoor RV Center
What I appreciated most about Brett was his transparency—he didn’t hesitate to share what he liked and didn’t like about the company. At one point, he even referred to sales as a “necessary evil.” Listen here.
Mind Over Land
We had Seth Smith, one of the founders of this nonprofit, on the show to explain how they provide veterans with free overlanding trips for a weekend. The trips include everything they need, even transportation in a vehicle for the weekend. The organization’s goal is to help veterans reconnect with the outdoors and regain a sense of community. Listen here.
Truckhouse
We were already in Nevada recording our 100th episode at the Dragonfly Energy Studio when we were introduced to Truckhouse. We felt like celebrities in that studio—everything from the audio to the video was taken care of, and all we had to do was sit down and have a conversation. Plus, they even offered us drinks and snacks!
Live Shows from the FMCA Convention in Perry, Georgia
It’s a beautiful property, and I really enjoyed all the guests we had on. We even did live walkthroughs of RVs that week, with National Indoor RV Center and the REV Group. Explore them here.
Keystone at the Tampa Show
This episode was recorded when Sean traveled to the Tampa RV Show, where he met up with Battle Born Batteries and Keystone RV to talk about their partnership to install Dragonfly Energy batteries directly from the factory in Keystone units. He recorded the episode in one of the show units, and you can really feel the energy of the event throughout the conversation. Listen here.
Our First Episode SnapPad
The episode that started it all! We were nervous, but this was the episode that proved our idea for the show was on point. We reached out to SnapPad to be our first guest, and they graciously agreed. The rest is history! Listen here.

I enjoyed this episode..very interesting and relevant since we are currently staying at a KOA (monterey/santa cruz)..it says Holiday in the sign and I have been wondering what it is supposed to mean! I wonder if KOA is doing anything in regard to long term stays? we travel for work in healthcare and are currently surrounded on all sides by travel nurses who are long term stays, too.
