Second half of my conversation with Mecir Ureta. Un joven peruano, mentor y defensor de estudiantes indocumentados en California.
Mecir A. Ureta (He/Him/His) born and raised in Lima, Perú is a Peruanx, First-Generation, Latinx, Indigenous, and Social Justice Advocate in California. He Came to the U.S. in 2003. At an early age, he understood that one day he would face the reality of being Undocumented. Through his journey, Mecir has been involved with multiple immigrant organizations and movements, one of them being the "Dreamer" movement, although, he does not call himself a "Dreamer". These experiences amongst his love for his family and community have influenced his passion for Higher Education. A former College Tennis Player, Mecir holds an Associate's in Sociology, Bachelor's in Spanish with an Emphasis on Latin-American Literature, and a Master's in College Counseling. In his current roles, he serves as the Senior Coordinator of Undocumented Students Services at Cal Poly Pomona in Los Angeles. A program was founded to provide support services and resources to immigrant communities at his institution. In his practice, Mecir uses a Holistic approach to empower and lift the experiences of his students.

Melissa Rivero is the author of The Affairs of the Falcóns, which won the 2019 New American Voices Award and a 2020 International Latino Book Award. The book was also longlisted for the PEN/Hemingway Debut Novel Prize, the Aspen Words Literary Prize, and the Center for Fiction’s First Novel Prize. Born in Lima, Peru, and raised in Brooklyn, she is a graduate of NYU and Brooklyn Law School. Melissa currently works as in-house legal counsel at a startup. She still lives in Brooklyn with her family.

Delia Rios was born and raised in Lima, Peru, and moved to the United States at the age of 13. She graduated from Rutgers University with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering in May 2009. For various years, she was an active member of SHPE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers), where she held various positions including Chapter President at Rutgers University.
She works in New York City as a Quality Assurance Manager for FOODMatch Inc., a company that imports food products from all over the world, including Europe and South America. As part of her job, she works with Peruvian Vendors, where she puts her Spanish-speaking skills to use.
In her free time, she enjoys traveling (up to 20 countries) and dancing (recently learning New York-style salsa).

En este episodio conversó con Will Vivar, un peruano en Boston, consultor de sistemas, sobre la película “Identidad”y nuestra peruanidad siendo inmigrantes. Hablamos de la comunidad peruana en Hartford, Connecticut y su presencia desde los años 60s, la niñez en Perú en los 80s y 90s, y como el orgullo peruano fue creciendo estando lejos.
William Vivar se define como: hijo de Willy y Ana, hermano de Jonathan y Jazmín, esposo de Eva y padre del tesoro más grande que le ha dado la vida, Gabriel. Vive en Boston, es consultor de sistemas, profesión que le encanta y que le ha permitido conocer diferentes partes de Estados Unidos y del mundo también. Orgullosamente peruano y con el sueño eterno de ver a nuestra patria alcanzar su potencial completo y de liberarnos de los lastres que nos lo impiden. Amante del fútbol (Aliancista de corazón y de nuestra selección) y agradecido de la vida por su familia y amigos.

Flavia Cornejo Vargas se identifica como Peruana-Americana. Although she was born in the USA, she feels much more connected to her Peruvian roots and culture. Flavia is an avid traveler and so far has visited 25 countries and 32 US states. Currently, she lives in Barcelona and is finishing up her first Master’s in Tourism before starting her second in International Relations. Además de viajar y terminar sus estudios, está interesada en Personal Finance para terminar de pagar su préstamos estudiantiles.
