In 2017 history was made, and Team USA won the first Quadcross of Nations. This year, 2022, two multiple-time champions and Team USA veterans take a rookie to the Quadcross of Nations. Rookie rider Bryce Ford is under the wing of Chad Wienen and Joel Hetrick to put the USA on the top of the box again. This is the fifth time the USA will be attending quad cross of nations. Chad Wienen will be the anchor as this is his fifth time. While Joel will be the workhorse to produce wins. Then Bryce rounds it off with consistency and speed. A historical event with the most dominant riders in the world. Team USA with all the pressure on them to win nobody wants to be on that team that doesn't bring home the gold. Wrangell Gubler burst onto the three-wheeler scene by winning the Vegas to Reno race on a Honda ATC 350X, completing the event solo—an achievement previously thought impossible.In 2023, Wrangell was invited to join a team for the Norra, a staged rally race in Baja California, Mexico, resembling a traditional rally.Following the event, Wrangell and his new friend Julian Hoefert decided to compete in the 2024 Norra on a hybrid YZ 450F three-wheeler that Wrangell built for himself. This machine, along with others, is featured on the ATV-TALK motorsports podcast on YouTube.A year of preparation went into not only building the race three-wheeler but also a chase vehicle. The TRI 450F had been tested in several desert races leading up to this event.The rally began with a flurry of final preparations, and with time running out, exhaustion became an early challenge for team leader Wrangell. He took all the responsibility on himself, but unfortunately, a minor mechanical issue ended their race on Day 3. A casual discussion about shock setups on a 700 Raptor evolves into a captivating story about building a new machine tailored for Jason's son.While the 700 Raptor was enjoyable on trails, it didn’t meet Jason’s expectations for cross-country (XC) style trails or country trails featuring motocross-style jumps.Jason Blunt and I explored many different options. Our conversation took a turn when he inquired about my quad, asking about what I rode or owned.The build process began months earlier, with the frame being powder-coated and reinforced with frame gussets. Many innovative ideas were implemented during this phase.Mr. Blunt was decisive, saying, "I want this machine." We hadn’t even discussed the real price or colors when he specified his preference for an MX off-road style machine.The build story is a dream come true for the Blunt family. Coming off the best season of his life in 2023, Bryce Ford is looking to improve upon it in 2024. In 2022, being selected for Team USA and winning the Invitational out west set the stage for his successful 2023 season.In 2023, with two wins, a second-place finish in points, and another selection for Team USA in Italy, Bryce seemed to glide effortlessly, contributing his part to help Team USA secure another gold.Maturity stands as a clear catalyst for change, according to Bryce. Starting out on motorcycles and three-wheelers for fun, Roy Dains found his passion reignited when the '85 quad racer hit the scene, spurred on by the encouragement of his friend Bill Loots. It was the spring of '86 when Roy made his debut at the GNCC, marking the beginning of an unforgettable journey in his racing career.Roy's racing career kicked off unexpectedly, as he had never envisioned himself as a racer. However, a fortuitous win in the B class altered his trajectory. This almost didn't materialize due to an unusual parade lap, which caught Roy off guard, nearly causing him to miss the start. Facing obstacles like a tree obstructing his line and grappling with the demands of a two-hour event, Roy embarked on the race with little preparation for himself or his machine.By the end of the '86 season, Roy Dains had secured victory in the B class. Encouraged by promoter Dave Combs, Roy transitioned to the A class, where he quickly made an impact. Despite concerns about jeopardizing the title race, Roy bravely seized the hole shot. However, a mid-race collision with Tom Tokay resulted in a flat tire. Despite this setback, Roy showcased his resilience by finishing third on the day.Black Water stands as one of the most iconic races in history, and Roy emerged victorious, clinching two overall wins from '86 to '93. Remarkably, he only missed one race due to work commitments out of town. Despite riding for Suzuki, Roy's triumphs at Black Water were achieved aboard a TRX 250R.From 1986 to 1989, Roy Dains was a formidable competitor, often considered one of the top contenders on the circuit. He even had a brief stint riding with Factory Suzuki. Despite never securing a championship title, Roy's prowess shone brightly as he claimed victory at the prestigious Black Water race twice.Reflecting on the inception of GNCC, the tales, and the diverse landscapes traversed, let's journey together through the memories and adventures of the sport. What began as setting up a seemingly random episode with Bob Kline turned into a meeting I could never have dreamed of—Bob, a Black Water 4 Stroke winner, and Hannah Hunter, the 3-time WXC Champion.Revealing the transition from an old-school 3-wheeler cross-country racer to a young 4-wheeler racer, the fire burns the same in their eyes despite almost 40 years' age and time difference in racing.
