When I first started my career it was a lot of verite/documentary style coverage. Which usually meant going hand held and running around grabbing what I felt were interesting shots. As my career progressed and working on larger sets with more demand for a structured approach, I soon realized that my approach was had too many faults. There was a lack of coverage that not only made my time on set longer than needed but in the edit there were a lot of gaps in where I could have told a more thoughtful story. The last few years we've seen a huge cross over from photography to cinematography, with many adopting the ultra soft light look. Nothing wrong with soft light at all, give me a 12x12 of magic cloth with a grid all day! However, there are instances where balancing between having both hard and soft light has created a new paradigm shift away from your traditional soft source lighting. One fear many owner/ops hate being in the middle of is the fear of being undercut by others and missing out on a job. Now I totally understand that getting paid is way better than not being paid at all, however when you do too many jobs where you intentionally undercut yourself, not only do you continue a pattern of losing out on overall income but you soon start to realize (or I hope you start to realize) that you're not getting paid what you're actually worth.
