The initial inspiration for the film was NOT based on a true story – it was based on an unfinished Edgar Allan Poe story that was also called “The Lighthouse.” Max Eggers began adapting the story but couldn’t figure out what to do with it so his brother jumped in to help, sourcing the plot from the story of a Welsh lighthouse tragedy, which for most people, would sound tame. It isn’t. And while the story of Thomas Howell, Thomas Griffith, and the Smalls Lighthouse isn’t a story of an unexplained disappearance, a mysterious death, or brutal true crime, it’s still a horror story that is worthy of Edgar Allan Poe. It’s been called the “SCARIEST FILM ON NETFLIX” by critics and viewers alike. It’s a Spanish film that’s written and directed by Paco Plaza, who found fame a few years before it came out with the REC found-footage franchise. But even though we’ve often bragged that the true stories we’ve talked about this season are scarier than the films they’re based on, the reality of that is really up to you. This time, though, the actual story behind VERONICA manages to stand out. It’s a very real story of an actual case of paranormal activity that had terrifying, even deadly, consequences.Have a question or comment? On October 26, 1965, a 16-year-old girl named Sylvia Likens died in Indianapolis from shock, malnutrition, and a brain hemorrhage. She had been tortured for three months and by the time she died, she could barely move or speak. She had been tortured, neglected, sexually humiliated, starved, beaten, and cut by her tormentors. Her autopsy later revealed 150 wounds on her body, including cigarette burns, skin brandings, and knife wounds. What had Sylvia done to deserve such torture? Nothing.Have a question or comment? The true story of THE ENTITY doesn’t begin with Carla Moran coming home from work one night, it actually started with researchers Barry Taff and Kerry Gaynor from the Department of Parapsychology at UCLA visiting the home on August 22, 1974. A short time earlier, the two men had been discussing the paranormal in a local bookstore when they were approached by a woman name Doris Blither, who wanted to tell them about her haunted house. The pair agreed to meet Doris at her home, not realizing at the time how baffling and terrifying the case would turn out to be. Have a question or comment? It was Easter Sunday, April 15, 1990, and Ray and Marie Thornton were driving along Snow Prairie Road, a rural highway about 12 miles outside of Coldwater, Michigan. Ray was at the wheel and Marie was next to him and the couple was playing a game they often played in the car to kill time on the road -- trying to make words and phrases out of the license plates they saw.But things were quiet along the secluded back road they were on that morning and they hadn’t seen another car in a little while. Suddenly, though, a green Chevrolet van appeared in the rearview mirror. It aggressively roared up behind them and then passed them at high speed. Marie won that round of the game. Spotting the GZ on the van’s license plate, she remarked, “Geez, he’s in a hurry.”They laughed and would’ve thought no more about it if they hadn’t seen the green van again a short time later. As they passed an abandoned schoolhouse, Ray and Marie saw it parked on the side of the building – but that wasn’t all they saw.The driver was outside the vehicle and was carrying a large bundle wrapped in what appeared to be a bloody sheet. He was walking toward the back of the ramshackle old building.Have a question or comment? There’s no denying that there are so many similarities between JAWS and the 1916 shark attacks on the Jersey Shore as well as the disaster of the USS Indianapolis that it’s truly terrifying. If you decide to spend your summer vacation on a beach somewhere, you might want to remember what we’ve been telling you all season – “sometimes, it’s NOT just a movie.”Have a question or comment? The legend of the Bell Witch is one of the greatest ghost stories in American history. It has all the elements of what we have come to think of as a Hollywood-style haunting – a vengeful spirit, flying objects, sounds that can’t be unexplained, a pretty young girl, and a violent death. It’s also one of the only hauntings in history in which a spirit is responsible for the death of one of the protagonists in the case.Have a question or comment? There isn’t a lot that I can say about this film that you don’t already know – it’s a classic, there’s no two ways about that. It’s not only one of the greatest horror films of the 1980s but one of the great horror films of all time. But if you’re not old enough to have seen it in 1982 when it came out, you might be wondering why it was so scary to those of us who were. And for those who already know, it turns out there was another haunting that made news just before POLTERGEIST was written that’s even more terrifying – and hits a lot closer to home. In 1981, a young man in Connecticut took the idea of the insanity plea to the next level. He claimed that he was innocent of the murder he’d committed – he’d only done it because he was possessed by a demon. While the previous two Conjuring films took the intrepid duo, Ed and Lorraine Warren, to haunted houses, this was a new kind of horror story for the pair. And while the film takes the demon plot and runs wild with it in the last half of the movie, the first half is loosely based on the real story of the first time that demonic possession was brought up as a defense in a U.S. court.Have a question or comment? “It was chaos, things started flying around, people were screaming.” In 1977, hot on the heels of the publicity they received after the Amityville Horror case – which is show in the cold open of the film – the Warrens claimed that they investigated the happenings in Enfield, undoubtedly drawn there by all the press the case was getting at the time. Before they even arrived at the Hodgson home, several independent observers dismissed the case as a hoax carried out by "attention-hungry" children, but the Warrens would, of course, state that it was a case of demonic possession.Have a question or comment? This is, of course, based on a true story. But how true is this story? Well, as you’re just about to hear, NOT VERY. Truth, as they say, is often much stranger than fiction, but in some cases, you actually have to FIND the truth first. And when it comes to THE CONJURING – and with Ed and Lorraine Warren themselves – the truth is a very, very elusive thing.Have a question or comment? Maybe what gets called a DEMON isn’t what the variations of Christian churches thinks it is. Their narrow definition leaves out an awful lot of other faiths around the world and since people believed in spirits that attacked and even possessed people long before Christianity became a thing, then they might be something else... We can call them whatever we want but whatever they really are, one thing seems clear – that they’re very scary and very dangerous. Charles Raymond Starkweather was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, on November 24, 1938. He was the third of seven children born to Guy and Helen Starkweather. They were an ordinary, working-class family, and there was nothing about them to suggest that one of the Starkweather children would grow up to be a natural born killer. On October 16, 1992, one of the greatest horror films of the 1990s -- CANDYMAN -- opened across the country. But it’s the reality that the film is inspired by – racial terror, poverty, drugs, police indifference, and the disturbing murder of a Chicago woman – that is even more frightening than the movie itself. On May 2, 1962, a Haitian man named Clairvius Narcisse died of a mysterious illness – or so it seemed at the time. Then, a little over 18 years later, his sister, Angelina, was shopping in a local market and saw a terrifying, vacant-eyed man lurching toward her on the street. Angelina screamed, although not because the poor man in the ragged, threadbare clothing was so frightening on his own. She screamed because the dead man was her brother – Clairvius Narcisse.New Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/troytaylorodditiesCheck out our updated website and sign up for our newsletter at AmericanHauntingsPodcast.comWant an episode every week, plus other awesome perks and discounts? "The Phillip Experiment" has become known as one of the most famous paranormal studies of all time, so it’s not really that surprising that someone decided to use it as inspiration for a film. In 1972, a group of researchers in Canada were not only convinced that something or someone could actually be created by the power of thought alone and that it was absolutely possible to think something into existence, but some believe they finally achieved their goal by conjuring up a ghost that they called PHILLIP. Please do more episodes like this one!!
Thanks for such an interesting podcast. I've lived in NoCo StL for 65 years, traveled to Alton for good food & drink or eclectic shopping. Many of these histories I've never heard. Thoroughly enjoy it!
Background music is too loud...makes Troy difficult to hear clearly.
still have a couple of the records from the cereal boxes.
when is the tour in February 2023? Very interested.
Love the first part of show. So much shorter than the last 3/4s.of it. Guys its TOOO boring. Remember history class back in the day? Teacher droning on and on? Truth be told, and cold, this is just the same. Really, do a survey of 100 folks. This IS an area lacking in talent and presenting.
This is a well researched and very informative podcast... However, I opted to discontinue my subscription after the completely unnecessary personal views about the "pandemic" were brought up, including an attack on those with well researched and extremely valid science based opposing views. Quite a shame, really, as the pandemic has absolutely nothing to do with the topic of this podcast.
I’ve just started listening to this - at first episodes I thought went by fast but by this episode it was wonderful. I am excited to keep listening!
Sounds like Tom was dealing with PTSD.
it's called kuru(sp) and it's prions that cause the holes in people's brains
I love this podcast!!!! I love how it combines history with the paranormal. I just started listening around Christmas time and now I'm almost all caught up. I'm also super happy the audio approved.
You know you can't get enough of Cody and Troy when you have to keep reminding yourself that they air every two weeks. This season has been my saving grace since I've been homesick for months living in another state. I'm so glad y'all did a season just on New Orleans, I've gotten to experience things about my city in ways I never thought imaginable, yet Cody and Troy have brought me there.
Hey Troy ans Cody longtime fan and caboose of tours . I finally started listening to thw pod cast and I am hooked . Keep up the great work. Patrick. p.s. see at dead of winter and yes Troy I got the cool shirt for a cause
background music too high and distracting. hard to concentrate on the narrative.
Just found your podcast, I have started with murdered in their beds, absolutely love it, keep up the great work you guys have made it very interesting, G'day from Adelaide, Australia.
Love this podcast! started listening in October and have listened to all three seasons. Can't wait for Season 4.
man, I want to give this podcast a chance, but the music in the background is irritating.
I love this podcast! 😍 I found it a few weeks ago, and have been binging it from the begining at work. I just finished the most recent episode, and I'm super bummed I have to wait until next week to hear more! Keep up the great work!
My husband and I have been listening to your podcast for a little while. But you've made some ridiculously, unwarranted politically divisive comments. As well as spreading misinformation about historical events. Such as the one about the Boston Tea Party and the Civil War. We'd considered making a donation to help your endeavors but have such opted against doing so. Your personal opinions are yours and are respected, but, the twisting of historical facts are not respectable acts. We will gladly find another to leave an endowment to do research in the historical, paranormal field. Another factor, is that your cohost promotes himself as being a drunkard, while working, this also a factor in our decision.
Hey guys! First off, we love your show! we have passed Alton several times and never knew it had such a colorful past. With that said, I did have some issues with episode 10. The subject of slavery is touchy at best. And the civil war was fought for several reasons, northern aggression against states sovereignty in my opinion was the top. But people have their opinion and I try to respect that. But you made a severe mistake when you said "The northern states had banned slavery. But the founders were slave owners." When the revolution started and we declared our independence, there was only 13 colonies or states. Slavery was the law of the land in all 13 colonies. And even though men like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson disliked the notion of slavery, Law at the time dictated that if you had debt of any size you could not simply set your slaves free. They were looked at as property. Like I said, I love your show! But touching on subjects outside of the realm of haunting and suc
