Description

There are a lot of unhappy people at work, and that is really bad for business. Research shows that when a workplace doesn’t feel like a safe place, people become guarded. And when people are guarded, they disconnect, and disengage.

On this podcast, we invite everyone (including you!) into more intimate conversations about work and provide access to world-class leadership development experts, executive coaches, and thought-leaders for these important topics. We hope when you listen to this podcast you are compelled to create space for conversations like this back at work. And when you do, we want to hear about it! We look forward to you and your colleagues joining us in The Leadership Living Room.

Welcome to The Leadership Living Room! Grab a seat and listen in...   "It's Not Personal, It's Just Business." Many of us have heard this phrase uttered at work as a means of dismissing the tough messages or bad behavior that proceeded it. It is often used by someone who thinks what happened should not be taken personally. However, if you have ever been on the receiving end of a "just business" message you know that it is impossible - it usually feels deeply personal because our brains are not capable of distinguishing what happens to us at work from what happens to us as a person. Your trust in that human being or that organization will be damaged during the exchange and you will become guarded when interacting with them in the future.   WHO IS JOINING US FOR THIS CONVERSATION? On this episode, we discuss the impact of TRUST withdrawals on our performance at work. Joining us in The Leadership Living Room is John Kompa. John is a highly effective leader who has spent much of his professional life leading teams. When we met him, he was at an uncomfortable moment in his career -- his team was struggling and people above him were getting involved. We are going to talk about how he navigated that situation and how we worked with him to successfully manage team dynamics, build trust, and heal their relationships. This is a relatable story we hope many team leaders will take the time to listen to.   SHOW NOTES & REFERENCES "The Five Dysfunctions of a Team" by Patrick Lencioni  "What Google Learned in their Quest to Build a Perfect Team" – This New York Times article introduced the world to compelling research completed at Google into the “secret sauce” of high performing teams. Their findings created a compelling business case for all leaders to create the conditions of trust and psychological safety on their teams.    COMMENT | SHARE | SUBSCRIBE TO THIS PODCAST!   @ www.TheLeadershipLivingRoom.com Watch this Episode on Youtube at https://youtu.be/d-H_337HNso Learn More About Us!  Visit our website www.thepeopleside.com or Follow The People Side on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-people-side QUESTIONS or COMMENTS?  Let’s talk!  info@thepeopleside.com
Today we are discussing the topic of Vulnerability at Work.  Practicing vulnerability is not only about sharing personal information and your feelings - employees display vulnerability every time they bring up a new idea in a meeting or challenge an old way of thinking.  Leaders practice vulnerability when they say "I don't know" or "I'm sorry" or make space for their team to give them feedback.  Learn why these "moments of vulnerability" are proven to accelerate trust and connection, and why that accelerates the performance of people at work.   WHO JOINED US IN THE LIVING ROOM TODAY? Joining us for this conversation is Andy Nelson, a two-time Stage 4 Cancer survivor, business leader, executive coach, husband and father.  Throughout his life he has learned the power of vulnerability and has experienced the impact of it in both the workplace and his life. We hope you enjoy this wholehearted conversation where we not only define and discuss vulnerability at work, but practice it ourselves.   SHOW NOTES & REFERENCES Archana Patchirajan, HBR Article, told to Emma Seppala, 2014.)  https://hbr.org/2014/12/what-bosses-gain-by-being-vulnerable   Readings & articles referred to during Andy's cancer story: Greg Boyle  Henri Nouwen De Mello Tippett   "Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, trust and engagement,"  - Brené Brown, TED2012.    Subscribe to this podcast @ www.TheLeadershipLivingRoom.com Watch this Episode on Youtube at https://youtu.be/fIu85tSfFTY Learn More About Us!  Visit our website www.thepeopleside.com or Follow The People Side on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-people-side QUESTIONS or COMMENTS?  Let’s talk!  info@thepeopleside.com
"As a result of 2020 dynamics, more than one in four women are contemplating what many would have considered unthinkable just six months ago: downshifting their careers or leaving the workforce completely. This is an emergency for Corporate America. Companies risk losing women in leadership—and future women leaders—and unwinding years of painstaking progress toward gender diversity." - 2020 “Women in the Workplace” report, McKinsey & Company  Hiring talented men and women is the beginning of gender diversity, not the end.  While many companies have committed to increasing the number of female leaders in their organization, far fewer have asked themselves what needs to change to retain her once she signs the offer letter.  Joining us in The Leadership Living Room for this important conversation is author, speaker, podcast host, and leadership coach Jo Saxton. Join us as we get curious about the impact of gender differences in the workplace and “reveal what feels real” for women at work right now.  If you want to improve gender equity in your workplace, and gain empathy for the differences that exist, this is your episode! “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way.” – Victor Frankl During times of significant disruption, many people begin to ask themselves existential questions, including questions about, “Why am I working so hard?” and “What is all of this for?” So we decided to use this inflection point as a reflection point and help people find more meaning in their work. This felt like an important conversation to have because at the time of the recording we were in the midst of a global pandemic and life looked vastly different than it did just a short time ago. Many people were asking themselves big questions and contemplating BIG life changing decisions.  On this episode, Claire Williams, a Client Partner at The People Side and masterful executive coach, takes the conversation further and explores what might happen to a person’s performance and motivation when they do work they find more deeply meaningful.  DOWNLOAD THIS TEAM TALK: https://www.thepeopleside.com/teamtalks If you want to help your team reveal the work that is most fulfilling to them, and increase their motivation and engagement, this is the conversation for you!   WHO JOINED US IN THE LIVING ROOM TODAY? “I get knocked down, but I get up again, you are never gonna keep me down.” – Chumbawamba When the world is throwing punch after punch, even people with extraordinary stress tolerance will struggle to stay focused and think clearly at work.  To survive, and even thrive, in the face of constant change and disruption people need to practice resilience.  But what does that mean? Angelika Jones, an accomplished coach and thought-leader in Applied Positive Psychology, joins us in The Leadership Living Room for a conversation that will help people “stay above the line” and adopt strategies that help us better respond to threats and change.
