Description
Upland Bird Hunting in Michigan focusing on Ruffed Grouse and woodcock. The goal of this podcast is to have a conversation that is genuine and relevant while having the feeling of sitting around the campfire or dinner table. The conversations drift and detour as every conversation should. Habitat, methods, bird dogs, the past and future of hunting are some of the many topics found in camp conversations. You're invited to pull up a chair and join the BirdCamp conversation.

Cindy and I have known each other quite a while and regularly see each other at youth hunts where we volunteer. We talk about what methods and mentalities work for guiding and mentoring young hunters at a youth event. Dan has been bringing his boys to youth hunts and we've crossed paths a few times as his boys get older. I wanted to get a little perspective from the parent point of view and it was an easy choice to ask him to be on BirdCamp.

We finally were able to schedule this recording and it was a very informative conversation. How the hunting community is viewed by nonhunters is a frequent thought topic of mine and Nick was able to bring some useful and encouraging statistics.

After two seasons talking about the whats and hows of grouse hunting. We switched it up and tapped into the decades of experiences accumulated by these gentlemen. This is the kind of conversation that makes a camp more than just about hunting. I hope you enjoy.

This is like many other guests already. A fun conversation about getting into hunting and taking the next steps.
Pardon a few audio bumps in this episode but I think they're finally solved after these recordings.
Rob Holsclaw is a brand new bird hunter with one season behind him and he reflects on what he's experienced.
Mark Kazmerski joins us in camp every October. We just chat a bit about some of his dogs and what camp means.

As far as real conversations go this was one of those. Almost two hours that wanders in and out of every sort of topic that comes up. Birds, dogs, NAVHDA tests, and when to order the special at a local diner.
Dennis Stachewicz, who is also to some known as Uncle Grouse owns and operates Aspen Thicket Grouse Dogs in the central U.P. We kept it fun and mostly on topic about how to become a better grouse hunter. As always any feedback is appreciated at mi.birdcamp@gmail.com
Scott returns to BirdCamp to dig into the search for the elite grouse dog. What to look for in a dog breeder and how to get that all important conversation with a breeder started.
Also send any feedback about any of our episodes as well as any shooting dilemma or upland etiquette sticky situation to mi.birdcamp@gmail.com
Andy hunts grouse, volunteers for upland events, and operates S.E. Michigan bird dog rescue.
Sandra is another northern Michigan bird hunter and dog trainer. She operates Windy Ridge Farm Dog Training LLC.
Brent and I like to talk and the off season is the perfect time to catch up. We cover kids, conservation, recent trips, the Wildlife Counsel, Pyke Gear, and a little about ethics and publicity.
There is a bit of adult language as sometimes happens on passionate subjects but nothing that hasn't been said before.
Burt Barker warned me that he didn't have much to talk about but he'd come on the podcast anyway. I'm always enthralled by the stories that come from a life spent afield and Burt is the kind of guy you'd want around the fire.
I wish my editing skills were better as Dez and I talked for quite a bit longer than this episode.
His TV shows Hunting with Hank and Dash in the Uplands brought bird dogs and bird hunting into many
living rooms over the 11 seasons on air.
Berg Brothers Setters has been producing elite English Setters for over 30 years. Scott Berg talks about Ruffed Grouse and the challenges that Ruffed Grouse dogs face in hunting these difficult to handle game birds.
Lisa talks about her desire for quality food, her dogs, and her experience of learning about guns and hunting.
Bruce is the Gladwin Unit wildlife biologist for the Michigan DNR and avid fan of George Bird Evans.
Our conversation touches on forestry, hunting grouse and woodcock, hunting ethics, and of course GBE and Old Hemlock.
I sincerely hope you enjoy the conversation.
This is a wandering conversation much like you'd have around a campfire. We talk about what feathers to save for flies, how some men have a way with words, and the short span that is our lifetime. Look for the 2nd offering from Lost Branch Sportsman's Club, Volume 2 Another Day Afield--Hunting, Fishing, and the paths that take us there featuring more of Jon's writing.
Abe is a 3rd generation woodcock bander in the NLP of Michigan and is also continuing the line of Wicksall Setters started by his grandfather.
New host Joe Schwenke introduces himself and tries to get used to speaking into a microphone. Also included is an interview with his son Caleb about maybe being ready to get a solo bird hunt.
A short Podcast talking about Ruffed Grouse Hunting in Northern Lower Michigan the weekend prior to opening of Deer Rifle Season. Talking Weather, Tactics, and Cuisine.

Good grouse hunting info. Good Upland hunting dog info. Both you guys are hilarious. I like the podcast because it helps me to understand the grouse hunting culture. Maybe you guys could get more guests that hunt grouse from all over the United States and talk about their experiences and the dogs they hunt with.
