Midwestern State head men's and women's tennis coach Scott Linn discusses the challenges his teams face week-in and week-out, and the on-court battles throughout the course of the season. Midwestern State women are ranked No. 5 in the nation and have started the season with a 9-3 overall record, including wins over five nationally ranked opponents. The Mustangs defeated No. 19-ranked Lubbock Christian to start the conference campaign and then ended the five-dual winning streak of St. Mary’s with its first-ever win in five visits to the Rohrbach Stadium Tennis Complex. The MSU men, ranked No. 25 in the nation, have won their last three dual matches and started the conference campaign 2-0. The men have played nine nationally ranked opponents and have a 7-7 record overall this season.  The women have three matches at MSU Tennis Center this week, including a non-conference clash with Colorado State-Pueblo at 3 p.m. on Tuesday. Angelo State visits for a conference encounter at noon on Friday, and Texas A&M-Kingsville will square off against the Stang Gang on Saturday at 1 p.m. The men return to action on April 5 with a dual match in Silver City, New Mexico, against Western New Mexico — followed by a meeting with UT Permian Basin at Bush Tennis Center in Midland, Texas, on April 6.

The Midwestern State men’s and women’s tennis teams faced tough competition and fared well at the UT Tyler Invitational.  The women defeated Findlay at home before departing for Tyler, and the Mustangs posted an impressive win over No. 3-ranked West Alabama in their first dual match at the UT Tyler Invitational. Auburn-Montgomery squeaked past MSU, 4-3, and West Florida posted a 4-2 win on the final day of the event.  The men beat two ranked opponents in their first two dual matches at the UT Tyler Invitational. The Mustangs overwhelmed No. 23-West Alabama, 6-1, and defeated No. 19-ranked Auburn-Montgomery, 4-3. No. 7 West Florida handed the Stangs a 4-0 loss on the final day of the event. Both teams are home this week — hosting Nebraska-Kearney on Friday at 2 p.m. Washburn visits for a dual match on Saturday at 2 p.m., and McKendree travels to the MSU Tennis Center for a confrontation that begins at 1 p.m.

Madison Brown, Alli Reily and Tristan Gabbard are leading the Midwestern State women’s golf team this spring. Midwestern State continued an impressive run of successful golf by finishing fourth in a strong field at The Southern Invitational played at the Cypresswood Country Club in Spring, Texas. In their next tournament, Brown enjoyed her second consecutive Top 10 individual finish, and the Mustangs placed a solid fourth as a team in the St. Mary's Rattler Invitational. The Midwestern State men’s golf team has posted back-to-back victories at the Houston Classic and the Rattler Invitational. Seth Bearden broke through for his first collegiate win at the Houston Classic played at the Golf Club of Houston, and senior Keaton Dickens led the Mustangs to a second consecutive team tournament title at Dominion Country Club in San Antonio. Midwestern State is 16th in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division II Coaches' Poll released by the Golf Coaches' Association of America. The women will tee it up at The Patriot Invitational on Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach, California, on March 18 & 19. The men’s next event will be the Oak Tree Invitational at Oak Tree Country Club in Edmond, Oklahoma, on March 18 & 19.

Kennedy Cameron recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts in a one-hit shutout to lead Midwestern State to a 5-0 win over UT Permian Basin in the rubber game on Sunday. Myranda Jimenez went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles to pace the MSU attack, including an RBI two-bagger as part of a two-run fifth inning in the victory The Mustangs went extra innings in both games of the doubleheader in Odessa on Saturday. The Mustangs took the opener from the Falcons, 6-5, in eight innings as Paige Gallegos' second hit of the game drove in the game winning run. Freshman Addison Lindemann pitched two scoreless innings of one-hit relief while recording three strikeouts to earn her first collegiate victory. In the nightcap, Kayla Bryant was 2-for-3 with two runs in a 5-4 nine-inning loss.  Midwestern State returns to Mustangs Park to face No. 6-ranked UT Tyler on Friday and Saturday. The Patriots have a seven-game winning streak and have been idle since Feb. 28 after defeating UTPB, 8-0, in three-straight games. UT Tyler is 16-5 overall with an 8-4 conference record.

Midwestern State closes out the regular season on Thursday night on the road at Cameron as the Mustangs renew the Red River Rivalry with the Aggies, who rallied to beat MSU in December at D.L. Ligon Coliseum, 88-87. The Mustangs closed out its home scheduled with four consecutive wins and was 12-4 “under the dome” this season. Dallas Baptist, West Texas A&M and UT Permian Basin were the other three teams to earn victories in Wichita Falls this season. The Mustangs have struggled on the road, where they are 4-7 this season, but they can snap a five-game road losing streak with a win at Cameron. A victory would give the Stangs a 17-11 record overall, but some near misses are costing them a berth in the LSC Postseason Tournament.

The Mustangs won all five singles matches and Philip Kamara remained undefeated this season. Bruno Sanchez made his collegiate debut and clinched the victory with a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles. The Midwestern State women opened their campaign with a 5-2 victory at Southeastern Oklahoma State as Anda Ghinga returned and coasted to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles. Fellow Romanian Jessica Binzari made her MSU debut and clinched the dual-match victory with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 triumph at No. 1 singles. The women host Findlay on Wednesday and both teams are playing in the UT Tyler Invitational over the weekend.

The Midwestern State men opened up the 2024 campaign in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, and defeated Southern Arkansas, 5-2, sweeping through the doubles while Stephen Slocombe, Killian Guillou, Philip Kamara and Justin Van Amerongen scored victories in singles. The following day, MSU faced No. 23-ranked Ouachita Baptist. Slocombe and Luis Diaz Argente scored a 6-3 win over the No. 3-ranked duo of Ole Valkyser and Matthew Tennant but the Tigers won the double point to start the day. Ouachita Baptist claimed victories in the first five singles matches — all in straight sets.  Both the men and women face Tyler Junior College in a Friday afternoon scrimmage at the MSU Tennis Center. First serve is set for 2 p.m. The Mustangs then travel to Durant to take on Southeastern Oklahoma State on Saturday. The dual match begins at noon.

After a costly and disappointing loss to UT Permian Basin, the Mustangs rallied from a 16-point deficit in the second half to force overtime at Angelo State. Pierre Sanders hit what appeared to be a game-winning shot for Midwestern State but Carvell Teasett threw a baseball pass the length of the floor to Kevon Godwin, who hit a baseline jumper with .04 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime. The Mustangs play their final two home games this week. MSU hosts Texas A&M-Kingsville on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., and Texas A&M International visits for a 3 p.m. game on Saturday.

Midwestern State tennis season begins in earnest for the men this week as they travel to Arkadelphia, Arkansas, for a pair of dual matches against Southern Arkansas on Friday at 2 p.m. and Ouachita Baptist at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The men finished third in the Lone Star Conference last year with a 6-2 conference record and competed in the NCAA Division II Regionals. The entire roster returns for the Mustangs this season.  The MSU women open up their season on the road at Southeastern Oklahoma on Saturday, Feb. 24. The men are also scheduled to play the Savage Storm in Durant, Oklahoma. The women are hosting the Findlay Oilers from Ohio on Wednesday Feb. 28. This week's Stang Gang Podcast features the latest news surrounding Midwestern State Softball with head coach Brittanie Talley.  Midwestern State hosted the Mustangs Round-Up at Wichita Falls Softball Complex this past weekend to wrap up its non-conference season, and now the Mustangs jump into the cauldron that is the Lone Star Conference schedule. MSU starts off with six road games at Angelo State and Lubbock Christian.  The Mustangs moved up their dates with the Rambelles to play in more favorable weather conditions on Thursday and Friday. Angelo State has started the season with a 9-1 record and is receiving votes in the NFCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll. Cheyenne Floyd is 6-0 in the circle with 38 strikeouts, and Tatiana Trotter is hitting .536 for the Rambelles.  Elizabeth Uhl, Addison Lindemann, Kennedy Cameron and Sydney Gonzales have established themselves as an effective pitching staff for Brittanie Talley and the Mustangs.

There are 14 freshman on the offensive side of the ball and 26 freshman are signing on to play defense at MSU. The Mustangs competed in the D2 First Pitch Invitational in Conroe, Texas, and earned their first win of the season defeating Central Washington, 4-1, and played No. 19-ranked Rogers State even, with the Hillcats winning in extra innings. Colorado Mesa and Regis earned one-run victories over the Mustangs, who played their home opener against East Central on Tuesday. The Mustangs showed their potential to the home fans with a 5-3 victory in the nightcap after the Tigers rallied in the seventh inning for a 4-2 victory in the opener. This weekend the Mustangs are playing five games at Wichita Falls Softball Complex as they host the Mustangs Round-Up. The Mustangs face Fort Hays State twice and also tangle with Northwestern Oklahoma, Northwest Missouri State and Southwestern Oklahoma. The action begins Friday at noon.

Midwestern State returns home following a four-game road trip and faces Eastern New Mexico, which has a three-game winning streak and is 10-4 in conference play, including a 108-91 victory over the Mustangs when the teams clashed in Portales on Jan. 13. Greg Johnson scored a career-high 39 points in the victory. Junior Hodnett hit five 3-pointers for the Greyhounds, propelling ENMU to 38 points down the stretch. That was the last time leading scorer Mason Gibson appeared in a game for the Mustangs, who have played without the sophomore guard from Allen, Texas, for the last six games. Gibson scored a career-high 31 points against the Greyhounds. His return is questionable for this weekend. ENMU will be at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Thursday night for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff. MSU will go for the season sweep against Western New Mexico on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
