Welcome to the CodeX Cantina where our mission is to get more people talking about books! Was there a theme or meaning you wanted us to talk about further? Let us know in the comments below! Today we talk about all the things we wish we knew before starting "War and Peace" by Leo Tolstoy. "War and Peace" is a maximalist effort of Russian Realism. It combines fictional elements of a book with real historical figures. This is meant to be spoiler-free but obviously will discuss real events in history. The French Revolution, we believe, was critical for understanding the opening chapters. We want to talk about some movements in Europe and Russia to help set some context for your reading. Tolstoy does an amazing job of walking readers through the book from there. We continue to reflect back on this book now, 6 months later, after reading it.  War and Peace In-Depth Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVAv8RQaURs&list=PLHg_kbfrA7YADI_Qy4oRWZFcNKX0DJuIq Anna Karenina In-Depth Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzQKRTN-hlE&list=PLHg_kbfrA7YAeKApGlGHLejJIznz37SOE Leo Tolstoy Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkaqYLXOzWM&list=PLHg_kbfrA7YAyibqABgxNq8dGLzGYw7UP ✨Do you have a Short Story or Novel you'd think we'd like or would want to see us cover? Welcome to the CodeX Cantina where our mission is to get more people talking about books! Today we jump into Books 5, 6, and 7 of "The Brothers Karamazov" by Fyodor Dostoevsky. We're going to move at lightning speed through just some of the analysis points we want to talk to. Let's be honest, you could make this video 12 hours and you still couldn't cover it all! In fact, you could probably spend that whole time just on the Grand Inquisitor and just trying to answer what does the Grand Inquisitor mean? Does his kiss represent something?  We all want it explained but literature is very personal so we're looking at the Grand Inquisitor, Rebellion, and the Fable of the Onion with our view on it. We will go off on tangents such as Jobs to be Done but it's all meant to be in good fun. Did you view Ivan and Alyosha as signs of doubt and faith for Dostoevsky's life? We'll go through a summary of each chapter and then jump into a discussion and analysis of it.  The Brothers Karamazov Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hXT6MQxZxg&list=PLHg_kbfrA7YDNylYYSLmmBzhjWlfsMkzW If you started here, make sure you go back and check out the "Before you Read..." video on this book!:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hXT6MQxZxg Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzdqkkUKpfRIbCXmiFvqxIw?sub_confirmation=1 ================================= Books or Stories Mentioned in this Video: "The Brothers Karamazov" by Fyodor Dostoevsky Channels Mentioned in this Video: Special thanks to the hosts of #BrothersKaramazov2021 Christy Luis: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5vxlV9uzt6efrwo-p1mh9g Peg: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC90shWXVdNwYDSPfDbc4OSw Victoria: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtmDLavsVHRuHZCEMBoUxnw ================================= #FyodorDostevsky #TheBrothersKaramazov #RussianLiterature TABLE OF CONTENTS: 0:00 Introductions 0:56 Book 5 17:16 Book 6 26:35 Book 7 Do you have a Short Story or Novel you'd think we'd like or would want to see us cover? Welcome to the CodeX Cantina where our mission is to get more people talking about books! Let's focus on Faulkner’s usage of Time in this novel, The Sound and the Fury. It's an area with a lot of contention for how to interpret it. Maybe adding more fuel to the fire that this book is about subjective truth. Let's look at an interpretation of time and how it interacts with the Compson boys: Benjy, Quentin, and Jason. Krypto has only read Chapters 1, 2, and 3 of The Sound and the Fury so far. We'll soon have another video out on the Old South/New South for our In-Depth series. What do you guys think of the novel so far? Welcome to the CodeX Cantina where our mission is to get more people talking about books! Okay, so Chapter 1 can be a show stopper for many people. I know it was for me on my first read. Let's talk about Benjy Compson and his view of the world. He is a very unique narrator with his Associative Thinking. We bounce between April 7th, 1928 and many other points in the Compson Timeline. Let's walk through some of the major events and how to make sense of some things for this story.
