Black Erasure

In this episode Brie and I discuss Black Erasure. We discuss Black Erasure in media, in culture, and in education. In Media  White washing movies  Where are the Black iconic sitcoms like in the 90s early 2000s (Martin, Jamie fox, living single, Fresh Prince, Moesha, The Parkers, family matters, wyans bros) Tarajis comments about equal pay & Monique  Cultural appropriation  Making black slang into “American slang” mainstream on social media  Elvis, Madonna, The Kardashians, (where is the black Kim K ? Famous for black culture while I appreciate Kim for her Criminal justice reform more can be done) Eminem, Jlo, Macklemore (white rappers) John B ( tina Marie, r&b classics sung by white people)  Korean fried chicken/ K-pop Korean & African American influence  In education:
Today we explore the hot topic issue of Black History Month, and how some people seem to think that it is "outdated". We have 2 experts to discuss: Dr. Kaniqua Robinson is an applied cultural anthropologist & Dr. Grace Gipson an assistant professor in the department of African American Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University (Richmond, VA). We review what social media & public opinion consider Benefits and Setbacks (pros & cons) to having Black History Month. Benefits: Knowing the  past ensures that history doesn't repeat itself  Black History Month helps combat white washing of history  Filling in the gaps where education curriculum is failing  Shows role models of greatness highlighted for our youth  Continues the legacy of black icons Set Backs: Corporate Black History events & Companies profiting from BHM (Walmart, Bath & Body works)  Too much history to be condensed into one month  Most History is about slavery and civil rights our history is so much more vast  Woke White folks alleviating their white guilt  Only hear about “the good ones” Martin, Harriet, Rosa. What about Malcolm, Fred Hampton, Nat Turner  No year long reinforcements to restricted to the month of February
