Ross Hill is a voice actor with an interesting story to tell. Initially working as a designer and animator, recruiting voice talent for his clients’ projects in London, he took the opportunity to switch sides and get behind the glass and behind the mic himself.  Having decided to try voice acting he set himself up on the platform Fiverr with the aim of accessing some scripts to get some practice, to improve his technique and improve his delivery. But it didn’t stop there. He worked on other ‘pay to play’ sites as well as for private clients but he believes his niche means it works for him to stay on Fiverr.   Which some might find controversial!  Across the industry Fiverr has a notorious image as being somewhere of variable quality and poor rates so why would a voice actor prioritise their presence there? Well it’s possible to deliver high quality in a really efficient way and get high volumes of work. Ross knows that he’s not working to industry rates but believes that voice overs should be accessible for all and not just to clients who can pay higher rates. Projects with low budgets need to have quality voices and there is a place for people to access more affordable options.  Get stuck into this episode to get an insider's perspective of working on Fiverr and dispel some myths! There are renowned iconic brands choosing to book voice actors and paying industry rates through the platform. It’s not just work for a fiver on Fiverr.  Are you ready to take your voiceover career to the next level? From its roots in Japan to the global phenomenon it is today, Anime is one of the hottest genres in voiceover.  And because of this there are SO many great actors out there who could come and be part of The Voiceover Hour Podcast.  So in this special episode we’re hearing from four of the most iconic voices in this genre; Josh Martin, Chris Rager, Jason Douglas, and Sonny Strait.  Josh Martin is possibly best known for voicing Dragon Ball Z’s Majin Boo. He shares with us how he got started in anime and his particular pathway to Dragon Ball Z.  Chris Rager imparts his knowledge and gives advice on the skills needed in anime. He believes a solid foundation in improv gives artists the ability to react to situations well. We hear what he believes are the other essential tools for voicing anime characters.  From The Walking Dead to Dragon Ball Z, Jason Douglas has a credit list that traverses stage, screen and voice roles reaching back to the 1980s. We learn about how each of these differs in terms of delivery and we get his thoughts on vocal techniques and performance for anime.  Last to share their incredible knowledge is the wonderful Sonny Strait. His credits cover many genres over many years. He tells us about the crossover of video games and franchises of movies spinning out of anime series and how skilled voice actors need to be to make the switch across each.  Anime is a genre unlike any other. Authenticity in casting is reaching far further now than it ever has done and in this episode we hear from someone who can talk about this first hand.  August Black is an American actor who is just finding his footing in the industry. With that being said the jobs he has tackled so far are solid steps in growing a long term career. August’s first acting role came from a music video directed by Dano Cerny, for the artist Wrabel, called “ the Village” which tackled a heart breaking story of a transgender teen in a un-accepting home. Being a trans man himself this opportunity sparked in him something never expected and pushed him to pursue a career in acting and voice over. In 2020 Xbox and DONTNOD released "Tell Me Why" with August Black voicing Tyler Ronan. Tyler was the protagonist of the game along side his twin sister Allyson Ronan making history as the first Playable Transgender character in a AAA studio game. The game was nominated for multiple awards and brought home 5 wins, including one for August, Gayming Mags best LGBTQ character 2020. In this episode August shares insight into his experience working in the industry and gives us his thoughts on diversity in casting and in video games. We hear about how authentic casting provides learning opportunities for people and more importantly inspiration for young trans people through genuine and sincere representation.  We discuss how characters can feel more ‘full’  when the voice behind the character has lived experience and can empathise during their performance.   August believes being proud and open is key to living and being cast authentically, to inspire others. You always just have today so make it count and honour what you need to be fulfilled and true to yourself. Are you ready to take your voiceover career to the next level? AI is a hot topic in the voiceover world. Joining me on a thoroughly interesting discussion are Rupal Patel and Ian Russell.  Rupal Patel is the Founder and CEO of VocaliD, a voice AI company that creates synthetic voices with personality for discerning brands that understand the power of customised voice and for individuals living with speechlessness who want to be heard in a voice that is uniquely theirs. VocaliD is a spin out of Rupal’s research at Northeastern University where she is an internationally renowned speech scientist and tenured professor. Named one of Fast Company’s 100 Most Creative people in Business, Rupal has been featured on TED, NPR, WIRED, and in major international news and technology publications. Ian is a British Actor living in the USA. Back in 2012 his wife bought him an experience gift for christmas - A one day Introduction to Voiceover - 2 years later 2014 he started his VO business. He's now a multi nominated and multi award winning talent (including Voice of the Year 2020), he can be heard in campaigns around the world including a global branding campaign for Intel and the UK localisation TV Ad for Noom. He's an established gaming and animation voice - You perhaps know him as Locke in Payday2, The Psyker in Warhammer 40k Inquisitor Martyr or Igor in the breakout Indie Hit, Chernobylite. We hear from Ian and Rupal their perspectives on how AI has a place in voiceover. By applying your business head and not your emotional one voice actors have new opportunities rather than threats as a result of AI disrupting the industry and gaining attention.   We hear how technology has moved on from the days of concatic speech synthesis and how resynthesis of the voice is done today with modern technology. Today’s neural text to speech is a new way of creating more flexible and higher quality AI voices with better tone and inflection. This also requires less speech input to create scalable AI voices. Which means a world of possibilities for voice actors! Having an AI built version of your voice means your voice can be used as a consistent brand element when you aren’t available, when you are on vacation perhaps, making it an element of the whole voice industry ecosystem and not the threat it's sometimes perceived to be.  Ian and Rupal tell us about the opportunities presented by AI and how to capitalise on this advancing technology and the types of work out there.    Are you ready to take your voiceover career to the next level?
