Seriously, "Long Time No Sex" is the best kdrama right now; it's just great television. Also: "A Killer Paradox" has a complicated antihero, and "Doctor Slump" is fun but predictable.
Special guest Anthony Ma joins us for this episode, who you may have heard in English dubbed versions of “Bloodhounds,” “Rookie Cops,” and “The Glory.” The multi-talented actor, writer, and director took the time to discuss what it’s like doing VO work for Kdramas and Japanese reality shows, including “Bloodhounds,” in which he voiced for Woo-jin (played by Korean actor Lee Sang-yi). He also shared cultural nuances that stood out to him in Kdramas, advice he would give to aspiring voice-over actors, and his next project as a director.
So much to talk about! "Single's Inferno" is on fire, watching fun (but dumb) "My Demon," "Marry My Husband" has genre twists, the best episodes of "Gyeongseong Creature," and star-studded "Death's Game" is worth a binge. Psst...new newsletter ! Subscribe here: https://kdramareports.beehiiv.com/subscribe. See you in the next episode! @kdramareports
Hello and welcome back to a new season of Kdrama Reports! Melissa shares her new updates for the podcast (hint: new content and format) and an upcoming newsletter. And she also gives her take on the much hyped and hotly anticipated Kdrama, "Gyeongseong Creature: Part 1" starring Park Seo-joon. Did you watch it? What did you think?
"Bloodhounds" premieres in top 10, new releases "See You in My 19th Life" and "King The Land" bow this week, Blackpink's Jennie makes her acting debut, and the top TV shows in South Korea right now. A couple of shows to add to your binge watch list, and screenwriter Kim Eun-hee ("Signal," "Kingdom") discusses her inspiration and career in a new interview.
“Squid Game” garners 14 Emmy award nominations, including for best drama series, direction, and leading and supporting actor awards. Sara and Melissa weigh in on the business of freelance journalism, the unglamorous hustle of covering Korean entertainment, and the pitfalls of being too hard on ourselves. (Editors: pay your writers. Pay your writers. Oh yeah - pay your writers!)
This week Melissa and Sara talk about the toxicity of hustle culture as well as feeling burned out. They discuss which dramas, like “Weightlifting Fairy, Kim Bokjoo” and “Welcome to Waikiki” and movies like “On Your Wedding Day” and “Runway Cop” make them smile. The movie talk turned slightly chaotic as they remember the 90s movie “Clueless” and investigate whether or not Cher and Josh had an inappropriate relationship. Once they solved that mystery, they remade the cult classic with the cast of “All of Us Are Dead.” New Netflix release "Boo, Bitch" got them thinking about cult classic high school films. They send a quick shoutout to KDR's international listeners, and Melissa recounts a recent horrible sandwich experience.
We're back!

We're back!

And we’re back! Kdrama Reports returns for a fresh new season. In this episode, Sara and Melissa catch up on their SXSW 2022 panel, taking time to recharge, and of course, their kdrama watch lists! They discuss Kim Woo Bin’s comeback in “Our Blues” and “Money Heist: Korea,” the remake of a Spanish drama. The tropey yet lighthearted “A Business Proposal” had them shipping the second lead couple, and “Pachinko” had some criticism surrounding Lee Min Ho’s acting. Speaking of Lee Min Ho circa “Boys Over Flowers,” who would you cast in a “Boys over Flowers” remake today? Melissa starts watching the Kang Ha Neul-starring drama “Insider,” and “Woori the Virgin,” and Sara is in a melodrama mood for “Eve” starring Seo Yeji. Who else is ready for a bit of rom-com and fantasy in the latest Hong sisters drama, “Alchemy of Souls” ?
Sara and Melissa round up the best kdramas of the year in this episode.  From Squid Game to The Uncanny Counter and Happiness - which dramas made the list of top picks? Song Kang, Park Hyung-sik, Chae Jong-hyeop, and Yoo Ah-in were also ones to watch in 2021. Kdrama Reports gives the 411 on what they watched, including: Vincenzo, Mouse, Lovestruck in the City, Sisyphus, True Beauty, Mr. Queen, Navillera, Taxi Driver, Nevertheless, A Witch’s Diner, Hospital Playlist Season 2, Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, Hellbound, D.P, My Name, and Happiness.  What were their picks for Top Kdramas of 2021? Stay tuned to find out in this episode.
In this episode, Kdrama Reports discusses the depiction of race in Kdramas. How are non-Korean characters portrayed?  Sara and Melissa discuss dramas like Itaewon Class, Moorim School, and Backstreet Rookie. How are Black characters depicted vs. White characters? The co-hosts discuss South Korea’s own controversial use of blackface and brownface, and the oddity of nightclubs that restrict foreigners from entry. It’s hard to forget Hollywood’s shameful past of yellowface and cultural appropriation in films like Breakfast at Tiffany’s and West Side Story, and the whitewashing of Asian stories in more recent years. And, a problematic video on YouTube - the co-hosts discuss why no one should be that surprised to discover English-speaking Korean talent. A thoughtful discussion on race which won’t be the last. Stay tuned.
This week on Kdrama Reports, Melissa and Sara talk with special guest Michael Smith Grant (OmniPouten on YouTube) about his k-drama beginnings, meeting actress Park Shin-hye and why "Penthouse" is the k-drama he can't get enough of.
Special guest actor Chae Jong Hyeop 채종협 (aka “Jimmy”) joins Kdrama Reports this week and discusses his new Netflix drama Sisyphus and his character Sun's role in the action-packed series, which centers around time travel. Chae also discusses working with actors Park Shin Hye and Cho Seung Woo on Sisyphus, and preparing for his previous role as a pro baseball pitcher on Stove League (2020 Baeksang Arts Award, “Best Drama”). The model-turned-actor describes what it was like filming during the pandemic, how he first got interested in acting, and what he enjoys doing in his free time. But, more importantly, what was the last drama CJH watched? The last song he listened to?  Team Choi Taek vs. Team Jung Pal?  What did he just eat? Stay tuned to find out in this episode. (If you didn’t understand some of the Korean or English, keep an eye out for upcoming video clips of this episode on YouTube and Instagram @kdramareports, we will be providing subtitles in both languages.)
This week on Kdrama Reports, Melissa and Sara review "Itaewon Class" with special guest Jason Yu (the lacklusterness, the bad kiss scene, and how Park Seo Jun's character, Park Saeroyi's hair NEVER changed). The trio also discusses how kdrama "Sky Castle" shows insight to the inner workings of the Korean education system, recently ended "Start-Up" and which kdramas we are interested in watching next.
Sara and Melissa catch up on dramas: "The Uncanny Counter" gets a new writer and a second season, why "Mr. Queen" is the most fun drama right now, and "Sweet Home" makes #Alive pale in comparison (those nosebleeds! That reportedly $1 million-per-episode budget). In other news, February dramas get their release dates: "Sisyphus" (Cho Seung Woo, Park Shin Hye), "River Where The Moon Rises" (Ji Soo, Kim So Hyun), "Vincenzo" (Song Joong Ki, Taecyeon), "Hello? It's Me" (Kim Young Kwang, Choi Gang Hee), "Monster" aka "Beyond Evil" (Shin Ha Kyun, Yeo Jin Goo), and "Times" (Lee Seo Jin, Lee Joo Young).  Park Shin Hye is having a busy season, and spotting a K-pop crossover: film actor Hwang Jung Min is featured in TVXQ Yunho's "Thank You" music video
Welcome to season 3 of Kdrama Reports! Melissa and Sara catch up on the holiday break and discuss which upcoming 2021 Korean dramas are on their watch list (and which ones aren't). The beginning of 2021 promises to be a busy season, with new dramas like Vincenzo starring Song Joong Ki and Taecyeon, actioner "Sisyphus: The Myth" with Cho Seung Woo and Park Shin Hye, and "Hello? It's Me" which pairs up Choi Gang Hee and Kim Young Kwang. Will you be watching some of their top picks?
In this last episode of Season 2 and for this year, Sara and Melissa discuss their top kdrama picks for 2020, breakout stars, webtoons, and the biggest dramas released in 2020 including "Itaewon Class," "Start-Up," and "The King: Eternal Monarch."  Other mentions include dramas based on webtoons, and dramas "World of the Married," "Extracurricular," "The Guest," and "Designated Survivor: 60 Days." Happy holidays to everyone and stay safe! See you again in January for Season 3 of Kdrama Reports.
In this episode, Melissa and Sara compare the dreams they had of each other and talk about what they plan on doing during the holiday season. Sara discusses why she decided to restart a drama she previously dropped and Melissa talks about what she is currently watching.
In this episode, Sara discusses the upcoming release of Korean film "Peninsula," the sequel to "Train to Busan," and catching up on watching "Search: WWW" and "The Good Detective." Poll results are in! Who has the sexiest voices in Kdrama? Woo Do Hwan, Ji Soo, Park Seo Joon, Simon Dominic, or Kim Woo Bin - who would you vote for? And, what does it mean when a Korean actor or pop star has a Dinosaur Face Type? Cat Face? Horse Face? We discuss.
In episode 2 of season 2, we talk about all things spooky! Korean horror movies and k-dramas. Everything from demons, zombies, and the lighter, not-as-scary side of ghosts.  Also, we talk about what we're watching, why Sara could only handle 30 minutes of "Zombie Detective," and Lee Min Ho's upcoming drama.  Tune in to find out! Follow us on Instagram @kdramareports.
In this season 2 premiere, YouTubers Fresh Baon (Justin, Raf, & Cedrick) joins us as Kdrama Reports' special (and first ever!) guest. We discuss the gateway kdramas that hooked us all in, and Fresh Baon shares their picks for top kiss scenes, dream cast, and favorite Korean snacks.   And why was "World of the Married" was so disturbing? What is the dilemma of seeing your bias acting in a drama?  Tune in to find out! Follow us on Instagram @kdramareports.
