On this episode of Coffee And A Car Ride we continue to exploration of the question of “What America means to me?”. I asked dozens of people that question and got both surprising yet somehow familiar answers. After hearing those perspectives, I was left wondering if what America means is really factual.

Very recently the argument has been made that democracy in our nation is not at risk because America is not a democracy, but a constitutional republic. According to the CDC, 150 people die every day from fentanyl-related overdoses. Annually, this is the equivalent of a 737 commercial airplane crashing every day. Yet despite this horrific reality, it has become something that has been swept under the rug, or used by politicians as a way of fear-mongering to win votes. The idea, the inkling of a real conversation, is fiercely debated, and now tossed aside unless it is used for optics. What is the easiest thing in the world to do? So easy, that even a scumbag would consider it to be disgraceful? It’s taking candy from a baby. While the world burns, Trump has recently made the dangerous claim that the U.S. has a national religion, the right religion that if foreigners can't love then they can't come. Republicans are fatalistic snowflakes. They are; we can be honest about that. They scold Democrats, and say they are too sensitive and politically correct. But the smallest thing, a tiny change, and they lose their marbles. Take, for instance, gas stoves. If the economy is doing so well, then why does everyone need a side hustle? If the economy is doing well, then why am I eating cardboard to prevent my stomach from shriveling up to the size of a pea? That’s what this Coffee And A Car Ride series, “Extra Duty” is about. On this episode I wanted to know how a nation like the good old U. S. of A should deal with a labor shortage that has partly been the result of such facts like birth decline. I wanted to know if the idea of immigration was the best way to fill that gap and keep the country going. To get an answer I decided to solicit a quote-unquote normal person. I decided to ask, an “everyday American”, a chill woman named Kristen. She is a mom, an Army Veteran, and a hard worker. The ideal person to get a perspective on an important issue such as this. And it was. While we share some of the same political ideals, we still have very different perspectives when it comes to this issue. If you are a fan of old classic TV, like MASH or China Beach, then I’ve got a treat for you. Texas is enacting new legislation that would require kids to be taught battlefield trauma care at school. That is right; kids in Texas will soon be just like Hawkeye Pierce, like 4th grade, baby-faced Hawkeye Pierces, who will be trained to perform meatball surgery on all those people who are being gunned down in Texas right now. Yup. Instead of dealing with the real issue, which is guns, Texas has decided that kids should bare the brunt of it. Despite the fact that kids apparently can’t handle a book about a black person, they somehow believe that children will be able to stomach a gunshot wounds. Conservatives always call liberals or progressives snowflakes. They say that we are easily triggered, and meltdown for no reason, and while there may be some truth to some of those claims, there is something that needs to be straightened out. See, what needs to be made clear, especially for a party that claims that the truth is the most important, is that Republicans are fragile. The truth is that they are made of glass. Sure, they may look well put together and strong, and transparent and clear, but the moment the pressure beings to build, they crack, and then shatter into a million pieces. There is some horridly terrific news; Tucker Carlson was fired by Fox News. That is correct my democracy-loving friends, the fear-mongering former bow-tie wonder-turned-demigod is gone. He screwed up, the truth was revealed and his employer cut their losses. Rupert Murdock has finally cut out a troublesome possibly cancerous growth in his media empire. As great as that news is, a very troubling question has not been addressed. Who is going to replace Tucker Carlson?
