Description

Movie Mixology is a podcast for movie lovers and do-it-yourself bartenders alike. Join co-hosts Pat and Marissa Gibbens as they engage in their two favorite pastimes: watching movies and making drinks. Each episode, Pat and Marissa imbibe a drink associated with a particular movie or genre. The pair carefully (or, not so carefully) examines each drink, each movie, and sometimes, each other. These intrepid hosts are not movie critics or licensed mixologists, but they hope what they lack in professionalism, they make up for in witty banter and the occasional, accidental, on-air burp.

But if you do what I want, I'll make all your little recent criminal transgressions go away and let you get back to that pathetic excuse of a life." XANDER: "I think maybe I should be like you...get all shot up for those stars and stripes."   XYZ recipe 1.5oz of white rum (traditional) or spiced rum works just fine 1oz lemon juice 1oz triple-sec or orange liqueur Lemon peel for garnish (optional)   Add rum, lemon juice and triple sec to a shaker with ice and shake Strain into a chilled cocktail glass Optionally garnish with a lemon peel

"Beer is for breakfast around here, drink or be gone." This week, Pat and Marissa watch a movie about working man aristocrats, Jamaican waterfalls, and get-rich-quick schemes. The movie is 1988’s “Cocktail” and the drink is tomato flavored beer (a.k.a. the “Red Eye”). Listen on to hear these hosts discuss just how much Tom Cruise’s character is addicted to love, slam poetry, and never learning from one’s mistakes.   FLANNIGAN: "Coughlin's Law?" COUGHLIN: "Douglas Coughlin, logical negativist. Flourished in the last part of the 20th century. Propounded at set of laws that the world generally ignored...to its detriment. Me. Most women, at one time or another, have faked it." HARRY: "Well, they haven't faked it with me." SALLY: "How do you know?" HARRY: "Because I know." Sally stares, then smirks and grabs a nearby napkin. SALLY: "That's right. I forgot. You're a man." HARRY: "What is that supposed to mean?" SALLY: "Nothing. It's just that all men are sure it never happens to them and most women at one time or another have done it, so you do the math."   WhoWhatWear Fashion article: https://www.whowhatwear.com/when-harry-met-sally-style  Meg Ryan article from Elle: https://www.elle.com/culture/movies-tv/g7884/when-harry-met-sally-anniversary/    Jazzy-O recipe In a cocktail shaker filled with ice mix the following ingredients: 1oz Kahlua  1oz Vodka 1oz Amaretto 1oz Bailey's Irish Cream OPTIONAL: Substitute 0.5oz triple sec for Irish Cream 1.5oz Heavy Cream Shake all ingredients and strain into an old fashioned glass with ice Add one drop of pink food coloring and stir Garnish with a maraschino cherry
This week, @momixpod mixes The Queen Elizabeth Cocktail, inspired by 2008’s "Quantum of Solace." While the hosts point out that Casino Royale’s sequel is anything but classy, they certainly agree that Dame Judi Dench is the true royal inspiration behind this week’s episode. As they sip their tart drinks, Pat and Marissa discuss why Quantum sticks out as a disappointing moment in an otherwise exceptional Craig-era run. Will the hosts ever be able to put their bitter feelings and comparisons to Casino Royale aside? Will their biases allow them to give Quantum a fair shake? Listen on to find out!   BOND: "You know, I was just wondering what South America would be like if no one gave a damn about coke or communism. Join these amateur sommeliers as they drink Pinot (sans Merlot) and discuss "Sideways," a 2004 dramedy starring Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church. Share a glass with the hosts and uncork topics such as the pros and cons of unlikable protagonists and the slice-of-life nature of the 'dramedy' genre. Are the hosts’ opinions about the movie as full bodied as the wine? Listen on to find out!   They clink and drink. JACK: “Man! That's tasty.” MILES: “That’s 100% Pinot Noir. Single vineyard. They don't even make it anymore.” JACK: “Pinot Noir?” MILES: [Drinking and driving]: “Mm-hmm.” JACK: “Then how come it's white?” MILES: “Oh Jesus. Don't ask questions like that up in wine country. This week, the hosts drink dark red Negronis and attempt to tackle Michael Bay's 2019 extravaganza, "6 Underground."  The hosts harp on the movie's thin plot, lame characters, and over-the-top soundtrack. ROVACH: "Martini. Stirred. Not 'shaken'. Stirred." One glances at the bartender's knife, then back to Rovach. ONE: "What's your opinion? [to bartender] "I'll take a Negroni. Just poured." While much has already been said about this movie's cast of comedy legends, this pod will cliff-dive to deeper depths by discussing the double standards of nudity in comedy films and the prevalence of the phrase "unrated" in the genre. "Mahalo" as always for listening and happy belated New Year!   EXT. RESTAURANT - DAY The Waiter approaches Peter's table, with a cocktail on a serving tray. WAITER: "Sir. Morning Mai Tai?" PETER: [smiling] "You know what? This week, your hosts drink "Kangaroos" as they discuss the movie's Bruckheimer-isms, falsely-advertised premise, and 'wild' acting performances. So, strap into a Jeep, don your lucky red jackets, and hop into the land down under with us! 🦘   NARRATOR (CHARLIE CARBONE): "Australia...'The Land Down Under.' Together, the hosts toast to Kubrick's cinematic vision, Nicholson's wild tongue, and Danny's iconic sweaters. Redrum, anyone?   JACK: [glancing around at the completely deserted bar then seemingly to no one] "A little slow tonight isn't it?"  JACK laughs manically. Suddenly, where there was once an empty bar, stands Lloyd, the bartender.  LLOYD: "Yes, it is Mr. Torrance. What'll it be?" JACK: "Well I'm awfully glad you asked me that, Lloyd, because I just happen to have two twenties and two tens right here in my wallet.  I was afraid they were going to be there until next April. So here's what: you slip me a bottle of bourbon*, a little glass, and some ice. You can do that, can't you Lloyd? You're not too busy are you?" LLOYD: "No sir, not busy at all."   *Yes, we are aware that Jack Daniels is self-classified as a Tennessee Whiskey, distinct from "bourbon," but the scene clearly shows a Jack Daniels bottle. A few years before James Bond was ordering martinis, Cary Grant was defying death - and smugly drinking Gibsons - in Hitchcock's 1959 thriller, North by Northwest. The hosts talk about the film's similarities to the spy blockbusters of today, the prevalence of hilarious irony, and the incredible set-pieces that hold up over a half-century later.    STEWARD: "Cocktail before dinner?" THORNHILL: "Yes, please. A Gibson." STEWARD: "Right away." He goes off. Thornhill takes up the menu, studies it. The girl raises her eyes, studies him. He looks up, catches her glance. She quickly looks down. He glances down at the menu again, then looks up at her. She glances up, catches him, and he looks away. Now she looks away. Then they both look up at each other at the same time and meet head on. They smile.  THORNHILL: "Well - here we are again."  Gibson recipe: Add 2 1/2 ounces Gin (we used Gordon's) and 1/2 ounces Dry vermouth  (we used Martini & Rossi) to a cocktail shaker with ice and stir.  Strain into a chilled glass and garnish with a cocktail onion.    GQ Article about Cary Grant's suit: https://www.today.com/popculture/cary-grant-s-gray-suit-tops-movie-clothing-list-wbna15295247
