Home 9 Category: So You Want to Write a Book Writing Workshops: Helpful or Harmful? So You Want to Write a Book with Suzette The writers’ workshop: a model that was developed in the 1940s by white male writers critiquing the fiction of other white male writers. Does that model help—and hurt writers today, and is there a better way? In this episode of So You Want to Write a Book, Suzette is joined by YA author Jamie Beth Cohen as they discuss the issues raised in Craft in the Real World by Matthew Saleses, including the traditional writers’ workshop model that a majority of western writers have trained to believe is THE way to get effective feedback on their works-in-progress. Be prepared to have your assumptions about craft and the writing process challenged. Are you ready to shake up your thinking about the rules of writing? Let Suzette help you open your mind. KEY TAKEAWAYS: When we talk about craft, we are talking about “rules” like “show don’t tell, narrative arc, conflict, voice, etc. This author believes that “pure craft is a lie.” There is no such thing as a “neutral rule.” It’s about who gets to make the rules. It’s about the expectations of the audience, and who is that audience. The traditional workshop model where the author must be silent as others comment on their work (the so-called “gag rule,”) may work well for writers who already hold power and need to listen more than talk, but it does the opposite for writers whose voices are already silenced or devalued. This book challenges writers to look beyond what many of us have taken for granted—here, that this workshop model is the way to critique works-in-progress—and examine the bias behind it. Who should read this book? Any writer, or coach who supports writers, and who is interested in elevating diverse voices. Be sure to listen or watch our latest show for more tips! Home 9 Category: So You Want to Write a Book Stop Calling Yourself an Imposter So You Want to Write with Suzette You are writing a book and are wracked with self-doubt. You feel like a fraud, like you aren’t a “real” writer. You have a bad case of imposter syndrome—or do you? In this episode of So You Want to Write a Book, Suzette discusses commonly held beliefs about imposter syndrome and challenges writers to reframe it by thinking about it not only as a personal problem but also a systemic issue exacerbated by bias and exclusion. Listen as Suzette shows you how language matters and helps you move from imposter to writer with normal fears. Are you ready to throw off the label of imposter and write your story? Let Suzette help you find the way. KEY TAKEAWAYS: Work to normalize doubt in the creative process and refrain from pathologizing your feelings. Pay more attention to the language you use — and that others use … are you an imposter or simply unsure? Are you a women’s fiction writer or a fiction writer? Are you a mommy blogger or writer? Language matters … Support women writers and particularly women writers of color when they write books outside of their expected genres. Put your money where your mouth is. I’ve pre-ordered Rachel Rodgers book for that very reason. I’m not sure I need another business book- but who knows? It wouldn’t be the worst thing ever if she taught me how to become a millionaire. And finally, as the Harvard Business Review article states in its conclusion: Perhaps we can stop misdiagnosing women—and ourselves— with “imposter syndrome” once and for all. You say tomorrow will be different, but it’s the same story, different day. There’s a battle going on inside you, and the wrong side is winning. Find out about one simple shift you can make so you can write the book that you feel called to write. In this episode of So You Want to Write a Book, Suzette digs into the number one enemy of the creator: resistance. She’ll share wisdom from Steven Pressfield’s The War of Art and share tips from her own writing life and her work with her book coaching clients. There’s a crucial mindset shift that a writer needs to make to end up on the right side of this battle. Are you ready to stop talking about writing and actually write? Let Suzette help you find the way. KEY TAKEAWAYS: Resistance to putting your butt in the chair and writing is insidious and universal. All writers experience it. You are not powerless against resistance. Show up prepared to meet it. Learn to recognize its face.  Get real with yourself. Decide whether you really want to get that book written. If you do, take on the mindset of a pro. Pros show up and write whether they feel inspired or not. Pros know they can’t do it alone. Pros build support and accountability into their writing life to accomplish their goals. Be sure to listen or watch our latest show for more tips! Home 9 Category: So You Want to Write a Book How Writers Can Break Through Fear? So You Want to Write with Suzette You have a big hairy audacious goal: write a book where you share your personal story or big idea with the world. But you also have a problem: Fear. Fear of starting. Fear of getting through the messy middle. Fear of being rejected when you reach the finish line.  In this episode of So You Want to Write a Book, Suzette discusses the fear that will inevitably arise during the creative process. Hear how other writers have successfully coped with fear. Learn strategies for both embracing and combatting fear. Listen as Suzette shows you how to move from paralyzed to empowered in your book writing journey. Are you ready to face your fear and write your story? Let Suzette help you find the way. KEY TAKEAWAYS: Fear will always show up in your writing journey because writing is bringing something into existence that wasn’t there before and the unknown is scary. Let fear come along for the ride with your creativity but don’t let it drive your decisions. One antidote to fear is to dig into it. Fear can provide you with useful information; it can point you in the direction of exactly what you need to do. Don’t beat yourself up when you feel afraid in your writing journey. In fact, if you aren’t afraid at least some of the time, you may be playing too small. Be afraid and do it anyway. Take action on that book you’ve been dreaming about. Life is too short to stay stuck or to play small. Be sure to listen or watch our latest show for more tips! Home 9 Category: So You Want to Write a Book How Unique Does My Memoir Need to Be? So You Want to Write with Suzette You have a personal story you are burning to share with the world but you’re worried you don’t have anything new to say. Haven’t there been enough cancer journey memoirs? Abuse memoirs? Addiction memoirs? [Fill in the blank] memoirs? How do you know if your story is worth writing? How can you make it stand out from all the other memoirs on the same subject? In this episode of So You Want to Write a Book, Suzette discusses the number one key to writing a memoir that works. Your memoir needs to be your unique story—the story only you can tell—AND it needs to have a message with universal appeal. Listen as Suzette shows you how to move your memoir from a tedious recitation of “this happened and then this happened” to a book that makes meaning out of a life. Are you ready to write your story? Let Suzette help you find the way. DO I HAVE ANYTHING NEW—OR WORTHWHILE—TO SAY?  First, it’s your story. Your story is unique. You are the only one who has lived it… No one else has lived this exact story in this exact way. If you write compelling scenes with specific details and dialogue, your story will come alive and meet the uniqueness test.  The other way to ensure your memoir is completely unique is Your writing Voice: Your voice is your unique style, how you “sound” on the page. It’s vocabulary, tone, point of view, and syntax that makes your writing flow in a particular manner. KEEP IN MIND:  To write an effective memoir: Know what your memoir is “about” and understand where it belongs. That’s one way it’s “exactly the same.” The other way your memoir needs to be “exactly the same is this: It can’t just be about the things that happened to you.  Your memoir must have a universal message. This is where less experienced writers really get tripped up. They think their book is about what happened to them, not why it mattered. Their manuscripts read this way: And then this thing happened. And then this happened. And then this … Which turns into a deadly recitation of facts that no one really cares about unless you make meaning out of them. Be sure to listen or watch our latest show for more tips! Home 9 Category: So You Want to Write a Book How Unique Does My Self-Help Book Need to Be? So You Want to Write with Suzette You have an idea you’re passionate about for a self-help or how-to book but there are dozens of books on the same subject. You wonder if you have anything new to say. Or maybe you have the most unique idea ever and are convinced that NO ONE has ever written a book on the subject. How can you tell if your book will be a huge hit or a giant flop? In this episode of So You Want to Write a Book, Suzette will talk about the paradoxical need to write a nonfiction book that’s both “completely unique” and “exactly the same” as other books in the marketplace. She’ll give you the scoop on “comp titles”—what they are, why they matter, and how to find them. Listen as Suzette gives you the tools to discern whether it’s worth writing that book now. Ready to take action? Let Suzette help you find the way. DO I HAVE ANYTHING NEW—OR WORTHWHILE—TO SAY ON THE SUBJECT?  That’s a really important question to ask yourself. Because if you don’t, you have your answer right there. If your book’s been written by someone else, you don’t need to write it again. However, if you truly do have a fresh perspective or unique angle that adds to the bigger conversation, this worrying that you don’t have anything to say is likely imposter syndrome. KEEP IN MIND: There’s one key thing to keep in mind when the doubt that your book will be of any use in an already oversaturated market gets too overwhelming to push past. People who have a problem will buy many, many books on the same subject. They’ll keep buying until their problem is solved OR their curiosity is satisfied. While it is important your book has a uniqueness to it, there is another key thing to keep in mind. The agent/editor/ publisher, and ultimately the reader, need to know where this book fits into the marketplace.  If your book is only “unique” and not “exactly the same,” the uniqueness becomes a problem. What kind of book is it anyway? If there aren’t any other books like it out there, that’s NOT a good thing. The agent/editor/publisher doesn’t know if it can sell your book if it can’t categorize it or put it in a box or compare it to other books. And even if you self-publish, you will have the same problem. Ironically enough, you want the competition. It means that there’s this problem a lot of people have and they are buying lots of books to try to solve it!  Be sure to listen or watch our latest show for more tips!
