She is a policy maker in the Hague, working on afforable housing in the Netherlands. Yet, Anna Koolstra sees housing as a European challange. The European parliment can more effectively handle the current housing crisis than a national Dutch government. One million people cannot find a house and sleep on the street. Anna pitches for major revision of the economic powers in real estate on a European level. Anna runs for the Europen parliament, for the Dutch Groen-Links PvdA party and is the last female name on the list. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/podcasts-4-brainport/message
For innovation, Brussels is the place to be, rather than The Hague. The European Parliament's work is more technical and content-driven compared to national levels, and many current EU challenges can be addressed with technology. Erik Becker (VVD) believes the European Parliament needs more tech-savvy members to make smarter decisions. With a background in engineering and international business, Erik feels at home in the multinational EU environment. He points out that the EU lags behind the US and China in innovation due to overly strict regulations, and argues that innovators need more freedom. Fast tracks for vital sectors, like the Chips Act for semiconductors, are necessary and could benefit defense and healthcare industries as well.Regarding developments in The Hague, Erik discusses the coalition agreement's impact on VVD's work at the European level and within the Renew coalition in the European Parliament.Interview by Jean-Paul Linnartz for Radio 4 Brainport during the EDIC Eindhoven groot Europees debat --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/podcasts-4-brainport/message
Bram Kamp runs for seat in the European Parliament. In Brussels, he will feel at home, Bram expects: "Brussels is more about content rather than about show." Europe sees the importance of technology and innovation but also sees a need to safeguard a strong position. Volt is a European political party. Can democracy in Europe still work with 27 countries, each of which has a veto right? Bram Kamp nonetheless sees a key role for Europe in combatting climate change, in improving security throughout the region. Every Dutch citizen gains a value of 9000 euro from being in various European cooperations. Should we be scared about a future  generation of engineers who know more about how to use AI than about their technical field? Do we need to know about the details of processing inside micro-electronic IC’s to help create better smart phone, or to design an autonomous car? Haven’t we continuously raised the level of abstraction at which we look into systems? Radio 4 Brainport hosts Jean-Paul Linnartz and Parag Gupta debate the role of novel technology in education with Prof. Oded Raz of Eindhoven University of Technology. Initially we invited this award-winning TU/e teacher Oded Raz for his view on the use of artificial intelligence in education. Oded is not only a columnist  for the Eindhoven University of Technology opinion magazine Cursus, he also is thought leader on education in his own series of podcasts and a vocal member of electrical engineering teaching staff. He has a right to speak up: student highly appreciate his style and his approach to educating. Yet, instead of diving straight into the role of AI in education, for better or for worse, Oded reveals that he is sceptical about modern aids such as powerpoint. He recently rediscovered how students learn more if a teacher develops the thoughts, the math, the ideas step by step, live on the board. So, in this podcast we start off by looking in more detail into how our brain absorbs knowledge. An essential part of mastering a topic is to be able to actively use the theory, and apply it both in routine and in novel ways. Making homework assignments really serves a purpose. Letting AI do homework for you, may come with unpleasant surprises during the exam. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/podcasts-4-brainport/message

Understanding Power Dynamics in AI with Mahault Albarracin. Join Podcasts 4 Brainport host Iman Mossavat in conversation with Mahault Albarracin, Director of Applied Research. Mahault is also a PhD candidate in the Department of Computing at the Université du Québec à Montréal. The conversation took place following her hybrid talk at the Technical University of Eindhoven (TUE), organized by "HumAIn Dialogues" and "Eindhoven Artificial Intelligence Systems Institute (EAISI)" on April 25, 2024. Mahault Albarracin shares insights from her unconventional career journey, spanning social sciences to cognitive computing, shaping her perspective on cognition and technology. Mahault highlights how AI's design often prioritizes objectives such as maximizing efficiency, profit generation, or fulfilling predetermined goals set by those in power. These objectives significantly influence the development and societal impact of AI technologies. AI will change the distribution of power in a new world order. Mahault Albarracin indicates that AI may expand the gap between haves and have-nots. The Arboretum in Park Meerland hosts over a thousand trees and shrubs from four continents. A truly international setting. When we asked Tom van Duuren of Arboretum Boomrijk in Meerhoven about a beautifiul tree garden in Meerhoven, we learned that in fact many trees all over the city originate from other countries. It gives a great opportunity to connect with nature. The arboretum is taken care of by volunteers. Residents can not only enjoy the collection of trees, but also adopt and donate a tree, for a special occasion or memory. April 14th, Mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem planted the "Burgemeesters boom", a special species of tree discovered in China, that invites to celebrate special events. Traditionally it is often surrounded by letters and messages hanging from the branches.   --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/podcasts-4-brainport/message

Salaai! Welcome to Lampegat! Every year during Carnaval, Eindhoven changes its name to Lampegat, the hamlet of the lamps. Festivities take place all over the Southern part of the Netherlands, but with differences between cities and regions. In Eindhoven it started as a catholic tradition to kick of the period of Lent, six weeks before Easter. It puts hierarchy in society upside down: everyone can dress up to assume any role, be it the major, fairy queen, a musketeer, rock star, football hero, whatever. To internationals, Carnaval often is a culture shock. The smartest city suddenly becomes “de gekste”, the craziest, the wildest. As an ex-stadsprins, Joep Verheijen had the experience of leading the town into threes days full of cultural events, a parade, but maybe most of all the vibrant nights in the many pubs and out in the street. Parag Gupta, of indian ethnicity but born and raised in the U.S., believed that he got into some kind of New Orleans Mardi Grass when he experienced Carnaval. Geisa Barra Cordeiro knows Carnaval in her home country Brazil, but she now lives in Den Bosch which hosts a very traditional Brabant-style Carnaval. On Radio 4 Brainport, Jean-Paul Linnartz kicks of a cross-cultural Vodcast. Many thanks to Olaf Koenen en Mike Weerts for the support from Studio 040. Recorded January 26, 2024 in the Eindhoven Parktheater. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/podcasts-4-brainport/message
February 3rd, “Lampegat” will announce its new prince.  Eindhoven, the city of light will be emersed in a vibrantCarnaval, just one week later. Joep Verheijen had the once-in-a-lifetime experience of being stadprins in 2007. For many internationals it is a weird experience to see the city go wild, young and old dressed up and joining in the festivities. But what are the cultural roots, and what is it beyond just drinking lots of beer? He will give a longer interview about the ins and outs of Carnaval. Join Jean-Paul Linnartz at Radio 4 Brainport for brief preview. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/podcasts-4-brainport/message
