Description

We are two people who fell in love at a movie theater and never quite left. We started this podcast, because even as two devout movie obsessives, we had some SERIOUS gaps in our film knowledge. As time has gone on, we are still covering gaps, but now engaging in great cinematic debates, awards season prognosticating, and geeking out about our shared love of film. We always deep dive after we've seen a new movie or revisit and old favorite and we are now inviting you to sit in on the conversation.

Sunday! Sunday! Sunday! Or whatever day you are listening to this episode we are taking it back to the late 90s and the WWE nee WWF. In a candid, raw, and unflattering documentary we witness the circus of pro-wrestling from the corporate to indie realm. Bodies are bloodied, and dreams are shattered, so it got us wondering: How could you like pro-wrestling?! Join us as we turn back the clock, fire up the VHS player, and hear from Mick Foley, Mankind, and many more in BEYOND THE MAT.
We are continuing our celebration of what can be argued as the greatest year of cinema ever with dreamy and teeny comedy 10 Things I Hate About You. We recite poems, have a Heath Ledger lovefest, and praise the feminist icon Kat Straford. And we had to have on our third mic Anthony Desanctis, programming manager for Frank Banko Alehouse Cinemas and devoted fan of this film from the age of 9. There's something special about 99 and something tough about our how could you this week where we ask: HOW COULD YOU NOT THINK THIS IS THE BEST TEEN MOVIE OF the 90s?!

Who won? Who lost? And what happened with that Best Picture announcement? It seems like a night ruled by Bella Baxter and J. Robert Oppenheimer, strange golden bedfellows. Ken rocked it. Da'Vine made us all cry. And the Oppenhomies ruled supreme. Join us with our favorite Oscar companions Director, Writer Jesse Kalavoda and Producer Jessice Kalavoda as we break down the event that was the 96th Academy Awards.

It's the most golden time of the year and we cannot do it without our third mic Anthony Desanctis! That's right, it's Oscars 2024! Will the Oppenhomies see Oscar glory for Nolan? Will Barbie be Kenough to the Academy? Is this the strongest Best Picture race in recent years? Who is to say? Us, of course! Join us as we lay out our predictions in all of the major categories in an energetic, at times contentious, film filled conversation about the 96th Academy Awards!
Come with me, and you'll be, in a world of pure admiration...for the beloved classic film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Dreamy production design, catchy tunes and the indomitable Gene Wilder combine to make this a much loved and often shown film. The story of its production is as rich as a Wonka bar and what it means to so many people is as glittering as a golden ticket. But why is this deeply adored film often neglected from being named as one of the best films of the 1970s. Hop on the boat and head into the tunnel with us as we celebrate and dissect: how could Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory not be one of the best films of the 1970s?

Okay, maybe it isn't the first rule, but all throughout this year we are looking back at the movies that made 1999 one of the best films ever. For our first entry, we are covering David Fincher's chaotic Fight Club. A film that is quotable, iconic, and without a doubt influential. Join us as we break down the core scenes, the charismatic cast, and the pure unadulterated cult like devotion for this film.

It's Ryan's birthday and it means a no veto episode is in the works. For this year Ryan is celebrating Zach Braff's Garden State in its 20th anniversary. It's a movie that was a Sundance darling, critically acclaimed and a boost for sales of The Shins albums. It's beloved by the How Could You?! Podcast, but this film went from much marveled to much maligned. In an emotionally honest episode we seek to answer the question How Could You not love Garden State?
We're back friends! And we are taking sometime to look back at the films of 2023 and to look forward to all that we have in store for 2024. Lauren and Ryan, what's your favorite podcast? We hope this one, and we hope you love this 20th anniversary holly jolly celebration of beloved classic Elf. With a production history as storied as toy production at the North Pole, and box office returns full of tinsel, this is a holiday favorite that went through the seven layers of the candy cane forrest, the sea of swirly twirly gum drops, and the Lincoln Tunnel. Join us we close out the year with Will Ferrell's joy, James Caan playing this as serious as a meeting of the families, and direction by Jon Favreau that captures the essence of the Christmas season.

We promised it would be weird and it is. We are dipping our turkey legs into the murky gravy of a Hallmark Thanksgiving movie: The Thanksgiving House. Join us as we watch Mary Ross inherit a home and a love interest in Plymouth historian Everett Mather, a man obsessively trying to prove the site of the first Thanksgiving. Will they learn to put personal interests aside in favor of love? Will they be thwarted by bad boyfriends and town gossips? Will Lauren and Ryan find the line of mockery and love of this movie? You have to tune in to find out.
Call him Dash Daring, Call him Chuck Francisco, just don't call him late to the movies. In our latest episode we sit down with the satiny voice of Colonial Theatre's repertory programming. Cooley High

It's back to school time, and we are back to our original concept: filling gaps in our film knowledge! For the first time in awhile it's a gap for both of us, the 1975 classic film - Cooley High. Directed by Michael Schulz and written by Eric Monte the ripple effect of this film is endless. As a launchig pad for actors, an inspiration to some of your favorite directors, and the legacy of Eric Monte's influence on television, Cooley High is a special film. Set in Chicago in 1964 we follow two best friends as they navigate skipping class, quarter parties, and living for today. Both a celebration of young adulthood and a heartening tale of the friendships that inspire us, this movie is one that demands rewatches and all the praise that comes with us. Which leads us to: How could you not think that Cooley High is one of the most influential high school films of all time? E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

2023-08-1801:36:29

It captured the imaginations and box office numbers of 1982 and it's the episode we've been waiting to do: E.T! Join us on a 90 minute conversation that covers how the film was made, the casting, the reception, and recalling how this visitor from outer space captured our hearts. In some ways this is the quintessential childhood adventure film, and its legacy endures on. We were both lucky enough to grow up with this movie on repeat, so the question this week is: How could you not think E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is Spielberg's best movie of the 80s? It's a bold question in a decade with three entires to the Indiana Jones series and The Color Purple. But on this episode we ask, and hopefully defend our claim.
