Will Girling is head of performance nutrition for World Tour cycling team EF Pro Cycling. He holds a Master’s degree and Postgrad Diploma in nutrition and is currently working on his DProf. Will is a lovely character and has led a fascinating journey. His relationship with food started young: he struggled with his weight as a kid but then lost that weight through unhealthy methods and battled an eating disorder in the process. He then took himself towards strongman competitions before landing himself a job as head nutritionist at EF Pro Cycling. Matching your nutrition to the demands of your goals is crucial, because while many different ways of eating will serve varied results, it’s the demands of your goals that you need to fuel for. We’re delighted Will’s agreed to share his breadth of knowledge and personal experience on this episode of the 33Fuel Podcast. Enjoy! Personal trainer to professional and amateur athletes, Grant Breese is this week’s guest on the 33Fuel podcast. Grant has worked in the industry for 20+ years and has developed a particular skill of helping his clients achieve their weight goals, whether that’s weight loss, maintenance or gain. Grant does this by using a surprisingly unique method. Rather than “beasting” clients with HIIT sessions and massive diet changes resulting in rapid weight change - perhaps in the 6-weeks leading up to a summer holiday - Grant works closely with his clients to create new, sustainable habits that lead to long-term change. If you’re looking to manipulate your weight – whether that’s gain, maintain or loss – then this conversation is for you. Strength and conditioning coach Jamie Greaves is this week’s guest on the 33Fuel Podcast. Not only is Jamie a highly experienced strength coach but he’s an absolute golf wizard, having played since he was eight years old to an extremely high level. He now works solely with golfers. But the topic of this conversation is far from solely applicable to golfers. We chat about the classic pyramidal model of training for any sport. Athletes the world over will understand the logic behind building a strong base of the pyramid before adding the pinnacle - the sport-specific training to make those final marginal performance gains – but amateurs especially so often jump straight to the top before nailing the powerful base In this interview, Jamie shares his wealth of knowledge on how to build a strong fitness base and how to get the most from your body with the least amount of training. Exercise physiologist, athlete and endurance specialist Hayden Allen is this week’s guest on the 33Fuel Podcast. Hayden has a real depth of sports science having completed his Undergrad degree at Loughborough and is currently completing his PhD. He’s also the elite performance scientist at Pure Performance Coaching. Hayden began his athletic career as a basketball player but was soon bitten by the cycling bug. He developed quickly, progressing to a Cat 1 racer over the course of just 3 years and improved his power at VO2 to ~450 watts. Huge! Hayden is in a unique position to combine his depth of scientific knowledge with his own real-world training and racing experience. In this conversation, Hayden shares a huge toolkit to help you develop your own training and racing. So, if you’re looking to take your training up a gear - or if you’ve hit a plateau and you want to break through it - this advice will be absolutely invaluable to you. Meghan Bentley has a deep academic background in the worlds of sport, exercise nutrition, health and lifestyle. Meghan works with the English Institute of Sport, has a Masters degree in sports and exercise nutrition and has just finished her PhD. It’s this PhD that we chat about today. Meghan’s PhD is all about matching the theory of nutrition with how to engender positive behaviour change. After all, “it’s not what you know, it’s what you do”. Many of us know what foods are good for us but why do so many fail to implement lasting change? It’s all about behaviour change. If you’re looking to build more positive habits into your life, this conversation is for you. Whether you’re an athlete looking to achieve training consistency or nail your diet or perhaps want to address other negative habits, there’s plenty to take away from this fascinating and informative discussion. This week’s guest is ultrarunner and coach Kerry Sutton. Kerry has a long history in endurance sports, having rowed at university before embarking on her ultrarunning journey with a gentle introduction…the Marathon des Sables. She completed the MdS soon after having her fourth child – an impressive feat in itself as any parent will attest – but she progressed quickly and is now one to watch on any start line. She’s won multi day races and frequently places in the Top 3 of the UK’s biggest races and has completed races such as the Jungle Ultra, the Everest Trail Race, the Thames Path 100, the Lost Island Ultra and the UK Trail Running Champs, among many more. In this conversation, we enjoy hearing about Kerry’s exploits and explore the role that fear plays in endurance events. Particularly pertinent was her recent epic at The Spine Race – a 276 mile non-stop ultra in winter along the length of the Pennine Way – where mountain rescue had to be called to extract her from a fairly sticky situation. She calculates their macro and micronutrient needs and tweaks according to training demand, body composition goals and energy requirements. In this conversation, Rachel highlights differences between pro athletes and amateurs and how we can close the gap with simple, easy-to-action methods. Is indoor training the key to achieving your best cycling performance or is it the work of the devil? Are the best cyclists entering virtual races and watching an avatar of themselves or are they out on the roads? Expert bike-fitters Phil and Jules – co-founders of CycleFit - are this week’s guests on the 33Fuel podcast. 22 years ago, they joined forces to create the country’s premier bike fitting service and have since worked with everyone from World Tour professional teams to keen amateurs. They are deeply knowledgeable and passionate about cycling culture, history and equipment and training developments. For this episode of the podcast, we all sat down to chew over the merits (or otherwise) of indoor cycling. What’s interesting is their totally opposing views on the topic: Phil firmly believes indoor training has no place in the world of cycling while Jules believe it’s a crucial tool to maximise potential. We hope you enjoy this fascinating, humorous and informative discussion.
