Danny sits down with Professor Hristo Kyuchukov for a conversation about racism towards to the Roma people. Hristo, who specialises in Romani linguistics, is himself Roma and shares the trials and tribulations living as a Rom in Europe. He takes us on a journey from as early as the 10th Century to tell us about the persecution that the Roma endured throughout history, up until the almost-forgotten Roma Holocaust. Rather poignantly Antiziganism is still ever-present today in both Western and Eastern Europe; it is no wonder that after years of Matteo Salvini's anti-Roma rhetoric studies show that 83% of the Italian population hold unfavourable views towards them. Danny and Hristo discuss what can be done to challenge perceptions and to change the difficult reality of living as a Rom in Europe today. Valentina, who at the time of recording was operating at the Instituto Moreira Salles in Brazil, has been part of the team working on the display showcasing the life’s work of legendary photographer Claudia Andujar who has been fighting for the rights of the Yanomami people for nearly half a century. In this episode of World To The Wise, Danny is joined by ‘ethical porn’ producer Rebecca Stewart. Rebecca, who works for Erika Lust in Barcelona, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019 and has since been very open about an unspoken aspect of the illness – sex. She discusses not only her experience of sexuality during cancer treatment, but also her plans to make a film which highlights and normalises the conversation surrounding sex with other breast cancer patients.
