Most people wouldn't consider a permaculture mindset for a public park or an ornamental garden. But that's a missed opportunity, because it could help individuals, organisations and councils reduce their maintenance budgets while increasing plant health and positive biodiversity outcomes. The 12 principles of permaculture can be applied whether or not you're growing food. They're simply a way to get us back in tune with nature's systems so that we can work with them instead of against them. Why should we row against the stream when we can roll with it instead? This episode doesn't have a guest, it's just me getting up on my soapbox. The 12 principles of permaculture are:Observe and interactCatch and store energyObtain a yieldApply self-regulation and accept feedbackUse and value renewable resources and servicesProduce no wasteDesign from patterns to detailsIntegrate rather than segregateUse small and slow solutionsUse and value diversityUse edges and value the marginalCreatively use and respond to changeFind your next job, or post a job ad: https://hortpeople.comFOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIATwitter: @PlantsGrowHere / Facebook: @PlantsGrowHerePodcast - Join our Facebook group!VISIT OUR WEBSITEwww.PlantsGrowHere.comYou’ll find heaps of educational blog articles, including How To Prune For Natural Shape, What Relationships Do Plants Have With Other Organisms?, and What Is Healthy Soil, And How Can We Build It?.LET'S WORK TOGETHERAre you in the industry or an enthusiast with something of value to share? Did you get a chance to see Peter Donegan's phenomenal garden design A Moment In Time at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show (MIFGS) this year?We spoke about it in Ep.181 A Daydream Supported By A Series of Equations, but I wanted to touch in after the event finished to get his perspective on how everything went, and if he actually managed to pull off installing a real fighter plane into the construction. In this episode, we speak about an old-fashioned plant palette, an exquisite green roof, the smallest water feature of the Show, and the little details that made all the difference.Check the links below to see images of the garden, as well as two of his other builds that we discuss. A garden is never finished. It's going to change throughout the year, and the seasons. It should be getting better over time instead of worse. And it should also provide you with multiple yields, whether that's a food crop, supporting biodiversity, reducing soil salinity, providing shade, making the space appear larger, or simply bringing you joy. It's easy to roll your eyes when you hear terms like "sustainability" or "nature-based solutions". They've become cliches used by companies to greenwash, and individuals to virtue signal. But these ideas have real value when you look beyond the greenwashing.Erik van Zuilekom is a plant scientist, permaculturist, landscape designer, and plant selection specialist who has come on the show to help us think deeply about landscape design, construction, and maintenance from a permaculture syntropics perspective. We go beyond the typical surface-level discussion and go deep into topics like growing soil, tissue culture vs seed-propagated plants, green walls, terraforming, irrigation, and much, much more. Have you ever tendered for a property development project, only to be rejected for some unknown reason? Why is it that some people are able to win work from property developers, while others seem to struggle with this type of client? It may have something to do with your ability to meet them on their own wavelength.Sometimes, as horticulturists, ecologists, landscape architects and landscapers, we can get a bit caught up in out own world. Do you still feel the passion you had for plants when you started this game? Or are you just turning up to work each day, going through the motions? My guest Maria Failla from the Growing Joy Podcast is here to teach us how to "connect with nature," "find our joy," or practice "self care," even if those terms don't really resonate with us.Plant care is a form of therapy that's being used to treat a wide range of mental health conditions, disabilities, and people of different ages. Even if you don't have access to a horticultural therapist, you can still take advantage of the healing power of plants by slowing down, breathing steadily, and turning your attention to the plants that you care for.Maria treats her mind like a garden where she sows seeds of joy, gratitude and wellness, and celebrates her harvest each and every day. As she points out, there will always be the weeds of negative emotion but through practice, we can learn to recognise and work with them so we don't feel overwhelmed.EPISODE LINKSGrowing Joy's website: https://growingjoywithmaria.com/podcast/Maria's book, Growing Joy - The Plant Lover’s Guide to Cultivating Happiness (and Plants): https://growingjoywithmaria.com/bookApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/growing-joy-with-plants-wellness-rooted-in-nature/id1313519159Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/33ExNjMA35y9Uv7ceJZaOKYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/bloomandgrowradioInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/growingjoywithmaria/Hort People: HortPeople.comFOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIATwitter: @PlantsGrowHere / Facebook: @PlantsGrowHerePodcast - Join our Facebook group!VISIT OUR WEBSITEwww.PlantsGrowHere.comLET'S WORK TOGETHERAre you in the industry or an enthusiast with something of value to share? In ep.172 I talked about ten career pathways in amenity horticulture. It was a quick run through some of the most important jobs in our industry, and pathways you can take throughout each sector. If you can't classify and name plants, how can you successfully work as a horticulturist? You probably don't need to know the exact scientific name for every plant you work with, but a basic understanding of how plant taxonomy works is a must for any serious gardener. In this episode, you'll learn how to name plants, how plant families work, and what on earth plant taxonomy and binomial nomenclature are.John Mason is my guest this week, and he's the creator of ACS Distance Education and a founding and current board member for the Australian Garden Council. He's passionate about taxonomy because it's so often not taught at a trade level for many formal qualifications.Whether you just need a refresher, or you need an intro to this fundamental part of horticulture and botany, this episode will help you upskill as a horticulturist.EPISODE LINKSSearch courses through ACS: https://www.acs.edu.au/pickcourse.aspxFollow or connect with John on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnmason5/?originalSubdomain=auHort People: HortPeople.comFOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIATwitter: @PlantsGrowHere / Facebook: @PlantsGrowHerePodcast - Join our Facebook group!VISIT OUR WEBSITEwww.PlantsGrowHere.comLET'S WORK TOGETHERAre you in the industry or an enthusiast with something of value to share? Ms. Brezzell you are doing the work of rebuilding more than long forgotten places..you are rebuilding people with hope & confidence in themselves to provide for themselves & their families. Thank you. My cousin & I are working up to what you have happening. We started in our own small spaces & have recently reached out to a local farmer & elementary school to see if we may develop a program that involves the kids.
