Taking your mind off of current events with videogames has been a pastime for years so today we're talking with Elsa, a frequent Talking to Women about Videogames guest, about a few of her recently played games. We start off chatting about the Metroidvania-style game Gestalt: Steam and Cinder before switching up to chat about Tekken 8 with a bit of discussion about fighting games in general. Rounding things out we get to Daniel's thoughts on the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Courses and Elsa challenges Daniel to take on the daunting task of playing Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.0:00:00 - Welcome to the Show, Elsa!0:02:12 - Gestalt: Steam and Cinder0:07:42 - Tekken 80:35:44 - Backlog Recap: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Courses0:42:14 - Backlog Recommendation: Final Fantasy 7 Remastered0:45:51 - Wrap Up/Plugs?Find Elsa on Tumblr at https://www.tumblr.com/agwhaan Support the show here! - https://www.patreon.com/ttwav
For spooky month, Jonathan and Ryan do some live game playing on the podcast of two games, Retro Realms: Halloween, and The Rocky Horror Show Video Game. Ryan gives a few ideas of videogames involving the undead and the Godzilla universe of monsters, and Ryan informs us of the evolving world of swears. The pair also discuss the game Clock Tower Remastered and talk a little bit about "Shadows of the Darned: Hecka Remastered" and give an update on their progress of Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. And finally, Ryan's not totally sold on Among Us, but he has so many stories about the game that he runs out the remaining space on the SD card.Show Notes:0:00:00 - Sound Test Technique0:01:29 - For the Viewers0:01:58 - Retro Realms: Halloween0:06:25 - The Retro Realms Crossover Series?0:07:10 - Press This Button to Go to the Nightmare Realm0:08:36 - You Just Killed an Innocent Nurse for No Reason0:09:17 - A Cat Searching Mission0:09:39 - Ryan's Videogame Idea: Zombies vs. Skeletons0:11:32 - Michael Myers: The Pacifist Run0:12:56 - The Rocky Horror Show Videogame0:13:26 - Everybody Has Classic Looks0:14:06 - "Talking to My Boy About Videogames" is Politically Neutral0:15:03 - What's Going On in Rocky Horror?0:16:19 - Ryan is a Poor YouTuber0:17:48 - How Does Retro Realms Compare to RHSVG?0:21:06 - Why Would You Throw Boxes at Skeletons?0:22:22 - I'm Gonna Say the S-M Word...0:23:16 - Remember Jim Henson's Dinosaurs?0:24:31 - Why Do You Have So Many Games?0:25:44 - Clock Tower Rewind Review0:26:48 - What Do You Mean, "Mutilated?"0:27:44 - Jonathan, Terrible Dad™0:28:58 - Michael is the Most Responsible Kid0:30:00 - The Music is the Creepy Part0:30:25 - Clock Tower Review for Real This Time0:31:02 - The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom Update0:33:02 - Ryan's Challenge to Listeners: Make a Godzilla Game0:35:15 - Shadows of the Darned: Hecka Remastered0:35:56 - Ryan's Library of Swears0:37:02 - More Shadows of the Darned0:39:24 - Imposters Everywhere Support the show here!www.patreon.com/ttwav
Today on Yeah! the gang talks about the song "Let Mom Sleep from the Dreamcast game Jet Set Radio, all the way from THE YEAR 2000! We get into the nitty gritty of building songs from samples, what was hot in the late 90s/early 2000s, and we also dig into street and youth culture from a billion years ago. A surprising amount of the 1960s was hot in 2000! If you're tired of magazines, you might be suffering from debilitating Mix-a-Lot-ism, a newly discovered illness affecting adults aged 18-65 all across the world! And this Maximum Utcast might be the thing to cure what ails you. Zoey and Jonathan are haunted by a few ghosts on this episode as they discuss American Gladiators on the NES before getting to the bottom of swinging mechanics in video games...are they really gone for good? Later, Daniel chats with Allen Ortega from Mob Entertainment (Poppy Playtime) about his love of the Borderlands series and how it helped him realize a lot about himself and get his foot in the door of the games industry.0:00:00 - 1-900-MIX-A-LOT0:08:03 - A Real Rashomon Moment0:11:10 - Kusoge: American Gladiators0:30:39 - Can a Game Like Borderlands Shape Your Entire Life? with Allen Ortega1:22:21 - Wrap Up/Plugs/Thanks Patrons!1:26:55 - You Better Be WorkingAllen on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/kenjisalk.bsky.socialMob Entertainment on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/mobentertainment.comZoey on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/adzuken.bsky.socialJonathan on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tronknotts.bsky.socialDaniel on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/douibyorthst.bsky.socialMaximum Utcast on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/ttwav.bsky.socialMaximum Utmost on website: https://maxutmost.com/Maximum Utcast's Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/ttwavMaximum Utmost's Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/adzuken
Currently Playing returns with guest Beith talking about the classic PS2-era game The Warriors from Rockstar, a videogame retelling of the classic 1979 film and 1965 book of the same name. Beith goes deep on his research, finding it to be a missing link between Rockstar's GTA series and their next big game, Bully. There is a lot of spoiler filled discussion of the film and how it contrasts with the game, so if you'd like to see the movie be sure to track that down on the streaming platform of your choice, or play the game on modern consoles...it covers a lot of the same ground, naratively. In the backlog phases of the show, Daniel shares his thoughts on Astro Bot, which he thought was not as revolutionary as many other people did, and then Beith challenged Daniel to play King's Quest (2015) starring Christopher Lloyd as Old King Graham in this modernization of a classic Sierra point and click adventure...that maybe strays a bit from the path?0:00:00 - Welcome to the show, Beith!0:05:41 - Currently Playing the Warriors0:54:07 - Backlog Recap - Astro Bot1:08:54 - Backlog Challenge - King's Quest (2015)1:15:15 - Wrap Up/Plugs?Follow Daniel on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/douibyorthst.bsky.socialFollow the Podcast Feed on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/ttwav.bsky.socialCheck out Maximum Utmost for written posts about videogames: https://maxutmost.com/Support the show on Patreon where you can get comic books written by Zoey and drawn by Jonathan: https://www.patreon.com/ttwav
On this energetic episode, Jonathan and Ryan watched the Kirby Air Riders Direct and the trailers from Gamescom and broke things down to their respective mans: Batman, He-Man, Kirby Man, or Bubsy Man, and decided which one is best...or did they? Will we ever know for sure? Only time can tell, but Ryan's favorite is clearly Rufus the cat. On a jam-packed episode of Maximum Utcast, we're talking all about wrestling, from the passing of Hulk Hogan to his star making role in the TV show Thunder in Paradise (that coincidentally was adapted into a kusoge, Thunder in Paradise Interactive). Later, Jonathan talks to Sarah Carapace about her time spent heavily customizing the game WWE 2K19 to make it a full of ladies and extremely lesbian-centric. We're talking about all the robots that are fit for combat on this month's Currently Playing where Daniel is joined by Christine of Outside of the Box to talk about how she's playing Two Point Museum (and Two Point Campus). It's a game series that scratches the itch of hyperfixation while providing a cozy take on resource management and might even teach you a bit about financial literacy. From there we have a brief stop off to talk about Power Washing Simulator before moving on to talking about Daniel's thoughts on Cave Story Plus and then Christine challenges Daniel to play Astro Bot.0:00:00 - Welcome to the Show, Christine!0:07:02 - Currently Playing Two Point Museum0:26:02 - Backlog Recap - Cave Story Plus0:29:45 - Backlog Challenge - Astro Bot0:33:58 - Wrap Up/Plugs?Christine's YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@OutsideOfTheBoxPodcastFollow Daniel on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/douibyorthst.bsky.socialFollow the Podcast Feed on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/ttwav.bsky.socialCheck out Maximum Utmost: https://maxutmost.com/
It's the bombastic first episode of the Maximum Utcast! Starring Zoey Handley and Jonathan Holmes with a special appearance by Coco Hendershott! Getting into the hottest news of the day about 2 different kinds of censorship, one of which involves Lollipop Chainsaw, and the other involves basically every indie game on the entire internet. Which one is real? Listen and find out! Later, the gang gets into kusoge discussions about Escape from Bug Island and then Jonathan chats with Coco about Death Stranding 2 and how it really ups the ante from the first game. Jonathan and Ryan react to the latest Nintendo Direct which had a lot of Pokemon news, a lot of Amiibo news, and strangely enough, a lot of Virtual Boy news. Despite the newness of the news though, Jonathan seems to think it was mostly old stuff that's not new or exciting, but still kinda cool. Jonathan is also incapable of saying the names of the games Pokopia and Popucom, which are tricky and sound too similar to each other. There's a bit of analysis about Ryan's fear of dying in video games as opposed to his fearlessness of real life violence and we learn that an over abundance of video games might make them feel less special.0:00:00 - Motorcycles, Everyone's Gettin' Em0:03:06 - The End of YouTube0:04:55 - Amiibo News0:05:32 - Nintendo Direct Reactions0:08:14 - Should We Move On to Pokemon?0:10:52 - What's Black and Red and Tennis All Over?0:12:13 - Are You Done with Videogames?0:15:02 - Lego Star Wars the Skywalker Saga0:20:27 - Anaylsis of Ryan0:22:56 - Is the Pokemon Legends: Z-A DLC Worth It?0:25:22 - What About Dinkum? Jonathan and Ryan dig deep on Donkey Kong Bananza to uncover what's great and what's maybe not so great about it, getting into some interesting theories about characters and contrasting DK with CK (Clark Kent, AKA Superman). Has Nintendo basically been making "good" Minecraft over and over with all their games from the last few years? Do people Ryan's age care about the Switch 2 or GTA6? Jonathan is excited for Mina the Hollower and Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment, but can he pry Ryan away from his Minecraft Lego set before Ryan falls asleep? On the eleventy first and final episode of Talking to Women about Videogames (main show! the feed lives on!) Jonathan and Tanya lament the state of the videogames world while looking forward to new horizons. Jonathan interviews Zoey Handley of Maximum Utmost, a once and future collaborator where they talk about "kusoge" or "crap games" and lament about how the enthusiast press mistreated them both. But they're back, in Maximum Utmost form! And the announcement that we've been holding onto for a little while is that TTWAV and Maximum Utmost will be merging into a beautiful fusion of writing and talking about videogames. The "Maximum Utcast" will be taking over the slot of Talking to Women about Videogames after the fusion dance is completed, so look forward to that on this same feed. We're talking with one of the hosts of Talking to Women about Videogames on this episode of Currently Playing, Jonathan Holmes, writer for Nintendo Force Magazine, MTV reality star, illustrator, video producer, musician, and all-around Rennaisance man. Due to the unique nature of his personal and work life, he's currently playing a little bit of everything and a whole lot of nothing. We get impressions about Mario Kart World, mini Tetris, Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP, Shadows of the Damned Hella Remastered, SNK vs. Capcom SVC Chaos, Street Fighter 6, PuzzMiX, F-Zero GX, and more. We go through a few rounds of talking about The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask before talking about how the Zelda series has been used as a technical showcase for the latest things Nintendo has to offer...for good and for ill. Then Jonathan takes a look at Daniel's backlog and suggests tons of different things before settling on recommending Cave Story+ due to it's nature as a similar feeling game to Majora's Mask, just in a genre Jonathan prefers.0:00:00 - Welcome to the Show, Jonathan!0:08:22 - Maintaining a Certain Level of Inadequacy0:09:39 - The Latest from Mario Kart World0:16:35 - Dad Mode (Mini Tetris, Shadows of the Damned Hella Remastered, SNK vs. Capcom SVC Chaos, Street Fighter 6, PuzzMiX, F-Zero GX)0:23:07 - The Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask Preamble0:28:49 - Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP0:37:00 - Backlog Recap: The Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask0:51:57 - Backlog Challenge: Cave Story+1:06:14 - Wrap Up/PlugsFollow Jonathan on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tronknotts.bsky.socialCheck out Nintendo Force Magazine: https://www.nintendoforcemagazine.com/Check out Daniel's latest song Light World on Spotify (also available on every streaming platform): https://open.spotify.com/track/393fSKmE0MhWZYuoAiHZmL?si=b04e9b9ee7404659Follow Daniel on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/douibyorthst.bsky.socialFollow the show on Bluysky: https://bsky.app/profile/ttwav.bsky.socialSupport the show on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/ttwav
In the finale (for now?!?!) of Yeah! our Yeah-nalyists finally dance with the one who brung them in the form of digging deep on Usher's "Yeah!" We touch on the connections to Jonathan's alter ego Freaky Constantina, dissect Usher's status as a sex symbol, get into a case of Crunk Juice, and try to put a button on the ubiquity of "Yeah!" as a lyric. Currently Playing is back with an old friend in the form of Kai, a frequent main show guest who's been busy with her school work but is happy to drop by and talk her recent faves in the cozy games space. She's been playing the farming MMORPG Palia, the fantasy farming sim Fields of Mistria, and the bug catching card battler Kabuto Park. Daniel mistakenly calls these "Animal Crossing-likes" but Kai sets him straight. Later they get into a bit of their thoughts about the Switch 2 before recapping Daniel's thoughts about Sword of Vermilion.
