The Phusicene

What is our human impact on the world and what do we leave behind for future, non-human, generations? By asking experts these questions, I discover they are not very easy and sometimes almost impossible questions to answer. In this mini podcast series I discover what problems we face today and what the impact of fire on our ecosystems is. Why is biodiversity so important? How can we undermine climate skeptics? What do past human disturbances leave as legacy ? And how can we change our mindset towards caring more about plants ? Conservationists use the cutest species to change people's mindset. For plants this is so hard because nobody feels this attachment to a cute plant. I find plants cute. You probably find plants cute. But the majority of people don’t. Crystal McMichael is an assistant professor at University of Amsterdam. But is originally from the United States. She did her PhD in Florida and post docs at the university of New Hampshire. But then she took a job here. Science is always a back and forward. It is hypothesizing and testing and then you figure out ‘o maybe there is a better way to do it’ It is a progress and there is never a certain end point ‘of yes now we are finished and know everything.’ But to state scientists don’t know anything is absolutely insane. We know humans now alter the intensity of fires. So climate change enhances the drought and the probability of fire expansion with the build up of plants that died from the drought itself. Even 2500 years ago you could say people left a legacy which is absolutely still there on the soil and has changed ecology in those regions in the long term for sure. By asking experts these questions, I discover they are not very easy and sometimes almost impossible questions to answer. In this mini podcast series I discover what a possible future might look like and what problems we face today. We have sort of opened up pandora's box of what could happen and how things could go feral and speciate. We have taken a planet and basically put a mixer to it, so all sorts of things could pop out. Together with Martin Smit I talk about how we aren’t yet at the point in earth's history where we are rebuilding. We are just trying to limit the damage. 
 Diversity is essential and it drives our climate. When you lose a few species you can say yeah we don’t see the effects just yet. But ultimately you just go on and on and on and at one point in time the system breaks. And then we’ll face even bigger problems. 
The Hortus also tries to bring the message that you have to work on your own environment as well. On the southern side of the glass house is a section planted with indigenous Dutch annuals with the idea to boost diversity with pollsters which are essential. Wat is onze menselijke impact op de wereld en wat laten we achter voor toekomstige, niet-menselijke generaties? Dit zijn de soms toch nog lastige te beantwoorden vragen die ik telkens voorleg aan experts uit verschillende vakgebieden. In deze mini podcast serie praten we over wat natuur nou precies is en blikken we 15 miljoen jaar terug op hoe ze ontstaan is. Natuur is wat ARK betreft de interactie zelf. Dus niet de soorten naast elkaar maar wat het met elkaar doet. Net zoals theater je wordt gespeeld door de ander dat is de basis, de ander bepaald wat jou strategie wordt. Zo werkt die natuur ook 
het gaat er om dat je inwissel werking met die ander je gene pakte zo maximaal mogelijk verspreid. Jeroen Helmer is al 30 jaar werkzaam bij ark natuur ontwikkeling. En is afgestudeerd aan de kunstacademie en altijd zelf al de natuur ingegaan. Zo ging hij s morgens vroeg met mijn broer het veld in achter alle vogels en insecten aan. In deze mini podcast serie ontdek ik hoe het Phusicene er misschien uit zou kunnen zien.  In het oud Grieks is natuur niet wat we er vandaag de dag onder verstaan! Het is een beetje een vreemd woord. Tegenwoordig zou je phusis beter kunnen vertalen met “de opkomst van betekenis”. Samen met Norbert Peeters praat ik over deze betekenis. Het westelijke leven is door trokken in een onderscheid tussen mens en natuur. Zo zegt de filosoof Henry David Thoreau: zegt we hebben vooral oog voor de zaden die we eten en niet voor de zaden die we niet eten.  Norbert Peeters noemt zich zelf botanisch filosoof. Daarnaast is hij programma maker bij de Universiteit leiden en Is buitenpromovendus bij Filosofie waar hij zich bezig met houd met onkruid en de geschiedenis van onkruid. I am Nina van Tuikwerd a graphic designer and science enthousiast. And welcome to the Phusicene. A concept, exhibition and mini-podcast series, where I will extrapolate upon a scenario for the potential next period of Earth’s history: the Phusicene. Phusi- (φύσις) from phusis meaning nature in ancient Greek. Each story, pamphlet and episode weaves together narrative storytelling, informative interviews, and science communication. In the podcast you will be introduced to extraordinary people and stories that talk about our current problems and future relationships with the natural world. With experts from different interdisciplinary fields I will start a dialogue on the new ideas and scientific insight of their knowledge on different plants and their extraordinary capabilities. Ik ben Nina van Tuikwerd een grafisch ontwerpen en wetenschapsliefhebber. En welkom in het Phusicene. Een concept-, tentoonstelling- en mini podcast serie, waarin ik een toekomstig scenario schetst van de mogelijke volgende periode in de geschiedenis van de aarde: de Phusicene. Phusi- (φύσις) van phusis wat natuur betekent in het oud Grieks. Elk verhaal, pamflet en aflevering combineert storytelling, informatieve interviews en wetenschapscommunicatie. In de podcast maak je kennis met bijzondere mensen en verhalen die vertellen over onze huidige problemen en toekomstige relaties met de Natuur. Met experts uit verschillende interdisciplinaire vakgebieden start ik een dialoog over de nieuwe ideeën en wetenschappelijke inzichten van hun kennis over verschillende planten met hun buitengewone capaciteiten.
