In this episode I’m talking about perfectionism and it’s very cosy bedfellow procrastination.I work primarily with objectively successful professional women (I work with men too, but over 90% of my clients are women who hold senior positions in their company or run their own businesses – sometimes both) – and a trait that comes up time and time again for these women is perfectionism – their constant and relentless pursuit of perfection. It can be a loud and urgent pursuit, but it can also be a low and constant hum.So many incredible, talented and ambitious women are shackled by their perfectionism because more often than not, it’s not helping them to reach greater heights, it’s holding them back. It’s keeping them smaller and more muted than their talents, passions and skills deserve to be.So today I want to tackle it and provide some ways you can finally break free from the perfectionism/procrastination cycle. The episode is broken down as follows:The Perfectionism-Procrastination Cycle explained – what perfectionism is, what procrastination is and how the two are linked. We’ll unpack The myths, lies, harms and excuses of perfectionism We’ll get practical and explore how to move From perfectionism into action – including The Intentional Procrastination Method Self-Coaching Questions for you to interrogate your own relationship with perfectionism and procrastination Resources referenced:‘How the Modern Epidemic of Perfectionism is Impacting Our Health with Will Storr’ on The Feel Better, Live More podcast by Rangan Chaterjee: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/feel-better-live-more-with-dr-rangan-chatterjee/id1333552422?i=1000648081242‘Children with ADHD Avoid Failure and Punishment More Than Others, Study Says’ by Devon Frye on AttitudeMag: https://www.additudemag.com/children-with-adhd-avoid-failure-punishment/‘Why procrastination isn’t laziness – it’s rigid thinking that your brain can unlearn’ by Annemieke Apergis-Schoute on The Conversation: https://theconversation.com/why-procrastination-isnt-laziness-its-rigid-thinking-that-your-brain-can-unlearn-270838 'How to Befriend Your Inner Critic' by Monique Shaw on The Rewriters podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/s3-ep-4-how-to-befriend-your-inner-critic/id1538589146?i=1000743388781 Further ReadingPerfectionism is adaptive and maladaptive, but what is the combined effect?' by Joachim Stober, Daniel J Madigan, Lazaros Gonidis on Science Direct: https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/psychology/perfectionism ‘Perfectionism’ (no author) on Psychology Today: https://www.psychologytoday.com/gb/basics/perfectionism#:~:text=Perfectionists%20set%20unrealistically%20high%20expectations,life%20for%20approval%20and%20validation. Today I'm speaking with Nicki Coe - Marketing Strategist, Business Coach and Co-Founder of the marketing agency Luna & Lion.Nicki worked in corporate media for many years but always knew she wanted to work for herself someday. Although she was constantly coming up with business ideas and plans, nothing stuck – she was always stumped by not having all of the answers and all of the detail laid out before she began. It was only when she overcame the old story that success requires you to know where you want to go that she was able to embrace and trust the pull of the next step, rather than planning for the big end destination.Ultimately, it was through this letting go of control and the need to know for sure that led to her creating two successful and fulfilling businesses.During our conversation Nicki shares her thoughts on:Overcome the need to know for sure in your careerStarting a business with your best friendUsing your emotions and feelings in goal & business planningResources discussed:Risk Forward: the Rewards of Not Knowing | Victoria Labalme | TEDxSantaBarbara: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TC6NIY56S0AThe Source | Dr. Tara Swart: https://www.taraswart.com/the-source/ Forming, Storming, Norming, and Performing (Tuckman's Model): https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newLDR_86.htm Connect with Nicki CoeConnect on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nicki_coe/?hl=enExplore more: https://nickicoe.com/Find out more about Luna+LionConnect on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lunaandlionagency/?hl=enExplore more: https://lunaandlion.com/Work with Monique:· Join 'The Rewriters Community'. In this episode I speak with small business PR expert and Founder of the PR Set, Pippa Goulden. Pippa is passionate about giving small business owners the knowledge and confidence they need to get their business visible and help them to grow through PR. What sets Pippa apart is the way she widens access to PR and demystifies an otherwise expensive, intimidating and inaccessible industry. Pippa rewrote her own career story leaving PR agency life and work as a magazine editor to create a business that makes PR accessible and doable for businesses who may have felt it was out of reach for them. She loves PR and she loves helping people succeed and now she does both in a way that also works for her and the way she wants to live.During our conversation we discuss:How we get PR wrongThe importance of mindsetGetting over our fear of rejectionPippa’s guiding principles for self-promotionPippa also shares the old stories she had to let go of to create her business and the work/life she now has.Work with Pippa:Connect via Instagram https://www.instagram.com/pippa_the.pr.set/. Welcome to 'The Rewriters' podcast. In this episode I speak with Sarah Potter AKA La Dolce Vita Coach. Sarah is a Hypnotherapist and Emotional Intelligence Coach, she offers Reiki, Marketing for healers, coaches and therapists and she's also a Vegan Cake Maker! Sarah describes herself as a 'multi-potential' woman. We talk about what this means during our conversation, but essentially Sarah has lots of loves and different threads to her career. She is unapologetic about it and she loves to help other women unfurl their own multi-potential careers too.Coaching and hypnosis helped Sarah get unstuck from an outwardly successful life in international marketing that left her feeling hollow inside. Using many of the tools we discuss in this episode, she was able to build a life that embraced her love for travel, service and creativity – all supported by a portfolio (or multi-potential) career.During our conversation we also discuss the role intuition and values played in her career changes and try to dispel some of the myths about changing your mind mid-career.Work with Sarah: Connect via Instagram www.instagram.com/ladolcevitacoach and find out more about her signature programme, La Dolce Vita® Resilience Boost here: https://www.ladolcevita.co.uk/ei/. My guest is Izzy McLean, a Transformational Coach and founder of The Whole Of The Moon, who works with women to help them make the changes they want to see in their lives. One of her key programmes She Bangs the Drum is dedicated specifically to women wanting a more positive relationship with alcohol.Driven by her desire to understand and get a handle on her relationship with alcohol, Izzy spent many years studying the science and practice of behaviour change before training as a coach and resigning from her leadership role in education to start her own coaching practice. Now, she's on a mission to share what she has learnt and help other women make the changes they want to see in their lives too. During this conversation Izzy and I share the reasons why we each decided to reassess our relationship with alcohol and where we’re at in our own journeys. This episode was created for anyone who has a niggle that their relationship with alcohol might not be working for them either. For more from Izzy...Access the free resources Izzy refers to in our conversation: https://www.thewholeofthemoon.life/resourcesBook a conversation with Izzy: https://www.thewholeofthemoon.life/bookJoin one of Izzy’s coaching programmes: https://www.thewholeofthemoon.life/shebangsthedrums and https://www.thewholeofthemoon.life/howsoonisnow Connect with Izzy: https://www.linkedin.com/in/thewholeofthemoon; https://fb.me/thewholeofthemoon.life; https://www.instagram.com/thewholeofthemoon.lifeWork with Monique:· Join 'The Rewriters Community'. Welcome to Episode 7 of The Rewriters. The Rewriter we feature in this episode is Dr. Parth Shah. Parth has an extraordinary career story and an impressive history of career rewrites. He is an Optometrist by trade and a Trustee of the Board of the College of Optometrists, the UK’s professional body for optometrists. Earlier in his career he worked in academia as a lecturer and clinical supervisor, he completed his PhD, pivoted into the corporate world at a strategy consultancy, pivoted out of that into self-employment, founding his practice and along the way worked in Premier League Football and got an Executive MBA at Cambridge Judge Business School. In this often philosophical conversation, Parth explains how he makes such bold career moves without certainty or bags of confidence. We discuss imposter syndrome and also delve into the need to create space in our lives and communities to allow deeper conversation, connection and empathy – particularly with those we disagree with.Parth refers to the following books during the episode – Working Identity by Herminia Ibarra and Range by David Epstein. Welcome to Episode 4 of The Rewriters. The Rewriter we feature in this episode is Paralympic Athlete, Wellbeing Advocate and Entrepreneur, Tim Lodge. Tim spent his 20s and 30s living the high life with a successful career in Corporate Finance. Although on the outside, he had all the trappings of success, on the inside he was suffering and by his 40s he was drinking daily and struggling with anxiety and depression. This all changed when at age 41 he received a phone call that would change his life in ways he could never have imagined.Although Tim’s story of transformation is remarkable, this isn’t a story of achieving the unimaginable, it’s the story of uncovering who you are, self-acceptance and coming full circle – it’s the story of a man and his boat.Like what you heard?
