Today we reimagine the future of humankind in the most exquisitely loving and joyful way.  We are honored to welcome Lani Trock, a brilliant force in thought, devotion, vision and creativity to SOUNDFOOD.  A multi-disciplinary artist based in Los Angeles, Lani works with the ephemeral to facilitate planetary evolution, from seed to spirit. We explore her vision for a future post-capitalist society that is founded on collaboration, kindness, abundance, unity consciousness, and harmony; and which utilizes  an ecological worldview, artistic freedom,  blockchain technology and decentralized protocols to reflect the truth of what we are: an interconnected, symbiotic organism, in which each of us equally essential to the collective whole.  Lani discusses the intention behind her current solo exhibition and so we blossom gently into the infinite garden which is on view at the Philosophical Research Society  through December 3rd. The installation is Lani’s latest offering of the national peace service (NPS), an ongoing project founded by the artist in 2017 which transforms radical thought experiments into tangible, temporary expressions to inspire our collective liberation.  Lani gracefully outlines the quickly evolving world of blockchain technology for us, explains why NFTs are important for artists, and how a decentralized web ecosystem (web3) can change the world. Today we step into an alternate, healing dimension: into the realm of the Fungi.  We are deeply honored to welcome Giuliana Furci, Foundress and CEO of the Fungi Foundation to SOUNDFOOD.  Giuliana is the first female field mycologist in Chile, a Harvard University Associate, Dame of the Order of the Star of Italy, Co-Chair of the IUCN Fungal Conservation Committee, lecturer, author, mother, and a true fauna for Funga. Under her leadership, Chile became the first country in the world to include the Fungi Kingdom in its environmental legislation, thus allowing Chilean funga to be included in the study and evaluation of environmental impacts throughout the country.  Giuliana’s dedication to research and cultivating awareness around mycology is grounding and activating. She shares why it is crucial to include fungi in our entire framework; beginning with our educational and legal systems; while simultaneously  recognizing the ancestral significance of how fungi (and yeast) connect us all through space, time and species. “Imagine Yourself Free and Think How Dangerous that can Be”  Today we are honored to welcome the brilliant and brave Ron Finley aka “The Gangsta Gardener” to SOUNDFOOD. This is a powerful, liberating, playfully provocative episode rich in plant magic, energetic sovereignty and positive vibrations.  Ron Finley is celebrated  as “The Gangsta Gardener” as a result of his bold move to transform the barren parkway in front of his South Central LA home into an edible, urban oasis. Frustrated by his neigborhood’s lack of access to fresh food, Finley planted his first tomato seeds in 2010; which initially earned him a police warning. However through his courage and diligence, these seeds eventually grew into a flourishing urban garden that has now blossomed into a larger movement for underserved communities worldwide.  Today, Ron serves as activist, artist, horticulturist, global motivational speaker, and a pioneer in the urban-agricultural community. Ron’s initiative, The Ron Finley Project, teaches communities how to transform food deserts into food sanctuaries and how to regenerate their own land into thriving ecosystems. Ron has empowered and inspired many young and underprivileged  people to be the designers of their own lives. He continues to cultivate his own flourishing garden in inner city LA and inspires countless others to sow seeds where they are needed most. Ron is also on the curatorial team of the Destination Crenshaw Project; a 1.3 miles of art and culture celebrating Black Los Angeles. He is one of the national artists for the public art challenge Fertile Ground Project out of Jackson, Mississippi. He truly embodies interdisciplinary cretaivity and expression. This episode is pure nourishment for the soul and soil! We are delighted to welcome Juliana Ciano -  neurodivergent educator, mother and co-founder of the beloved local organization Reunity Resources to SOUNDFOOD. Juliana’s commitment to a holistic system of pedagogy can be seen and felt in all of her endeavours. Her refreshing, grass-roots perspective is deeply inspiring.  Since co-founding Reunity Resources in 2011, Juliana has worked to build a next level compost programming that now diverts 1.5 million pounds of food waste from the Santa Fe landfill annually! According to the New Mexico Recyling Coalition, in the USA alone, 40% of food  (at an annual cost of $100 billion) is wasted each year and goes directly into the landfill. Meanwhile, 50 million people go hungry every year. Food represents 14.5% of the waste stream in America (EPA). Organic materials, of which food waste is a significant component which are disposed of in landfills generate methane, a greenhouse gas that is 21x more potent than carbon monoxide. Additionally, 13% of greenhouse gases in the US are associated with growing, manufacturing, transporting, and disposing of food. Bottomline: we are wasting tons of precious energy on our WASTE itself. And yet, there is a simple and tangible solution: compost!  Juliana’s commitment and scrappy, down- to-earth mindset offers a beautiful and powerful example of how the shift can begin in our own communities and kitchens.  Reunity Resources has expanded from gathering unwanted cooking oil from local Santa Fe restaurants, to composting en masse, cultivating its own farm and being of service to the community through education, programming and, of course, growing and sharing (human and soil) food! In this episode, Juliana reveals her passion for giving back to the endlessly generous Earth. She shares her wisdom regarding all things composting, mulching and how we can observe from plants, the importance of intersectional connectivity. Today we look to the ancient technologies of indigenous ecosystems to provide guidance for the future (and survival) of humanity in the face of climate change.  We are thrilled to welcome designer, activist, academic, and author, Julia Watson to SOUNDFOOD. Julia is a leading expert in the field of Lo—TEK nature-based technologies for the built environment and climate-resilient design. Her bestselling book with Taschen, Lo-TEK: Design by Radical Indigenism has been featured in The New York Times, The Guardian, Monocle, Architectural Digest, and more. Regularly teaching at Harvard and Columbia University, Julia’s studio work involves landscape and urban design, along with public speaking and consulting with brands on sustainability. In her studio, she collaborates with a horticulturist as Watson Salembier, with a focus on rewilding, and has just completed the summer gardens for Rockefeller Center using a native plant palette inspired by the American meadow.  Julia has written for Topos, Landscape Architecture Frontier, ioARCH, Kerb, Water Urbanisms East and co- authored A Spiritual Guide to Bali’s UNESCO World Heritage. She’s a 2020 TED speaker, and a fellow of Summit  REALITY, Pop!tech, & The Christensen Fund. Born in Australia, she regularly treks across the globe.  Above all, Julia is a master observer. In today’s conversation, she reflects on the greater understanding that has been revealed to her through her explorations of Earth’s  sacred spaces- what makes them sacred, who makes them sacred, and whether those experiences can be recreated in design. Her combination of extensive research and awareness of natural processes has resulted in the most visually stunning, nutrient dense, empowering,  design forward book we could dream of.  Julia possesses an exquisitely comprehensive view of the world, with attention to both the micro and macro,  she has dedicated herself to applying critical thinking  and understanding of indigenous ingenuity to the design of  modern, climate resilient technologies.
