It’s been a wild year for the music industry. Some music legends have cancelled themselves publicly over and over again, some continue to tour the world after allegations of sexual assault, and some are just living their best lives, putting out albums after marrying the love of their life after 20 years. PKL is here to give you our Spotify wrapped stats- some of us have discovered new genres, new adventures, new languages. Some of us are listening to the same thing we have always listened to, and will always listen to. We had a good time, we know you will too.
What’s black and white and talks with a super cute British accent? Dalmatian puppies! This week we sit down to watch a childhood classic, 101 Dalmatians. We discuss the iconic villain of our time Cruella De-Vil, develop theories around Anita and her past with Cruella, and discover that the Amber alert system for missing children was really invented by British dogs in the 40’s. The most important lesson here is, he’s not your husband if he doesn’t have the same kind of dog as you.
We clear up a few things in this episode. First, Matt Smith is a cross between Frankenstein and Wallace, in a super appealing way. Second, Mike White is a genius, and putting your last name into the title of your show is a sneaky power move. Third, we all love TV and think you might as well, so listen in cause we’ve got everything you should be watching this Winter!
She’s worked on The Grid, she helped to redesign Chatelaine, she’s currently working on the redesign of Best Health, she’s the president of the RGD, and in July, she opened a new shop on Dundas called Issues, that carries hard-to-find, independent magazines from around the world. This week we sit down with the incredibly talented, generous, and wildly smart: Nicola Hamilton. We talk to her about her career starting out in Toronto, and how she lost her Eat, Pray, Love moment to the pandemic, and instead decided to open her own magazine shop. Enjoy!
It’s Spooktober again, and we’re here this week, over Zoom, to chat all things Halloween. From our costumes this year (Elliot’s costume involves a whip, and that’s all he’ll say at this point), to our stance on handing out candy, we get into the traditions of this scary season.
What’s cold, impossibly fast, loves high school, glitters in the sun, and has a small town kink? Say it. Vampire. This week on our inaugural episode of Carpooling with the Cullens, we sit down to watch the highly controversial: Twilight. Featuring a new game called Save Her or Drain Her, as well as lots of questions from the uninitiated boy in our group, we settle in to guide you through this movie. Our commentary is unflinching, provocative, and very, very exciting. Enjoy!
Have you heard the story about the carpenter who's allergic to wood? What about the one about taking a DNA test and finding a long lost family member? How about the one about walking through Naples late at night and getting egged? No? Well listen in this week, this episode's a doozy....
Well we’ve made it, the final episode, the final Harry Potter movie. We’ve got a big fight, a broken wand, good versus evil, an evil baby in a train station, and some bad kissing. We watched every single Harry Potter movie and we’re stronger for it. We’re also back with our resident HP expert, Shannon Tigert, to help guide us through this final movie. Drink every time she says, “In the book”.
This week Kate is returning from a wilderness adventure, Elise experiences the full spectrum of human emotions while watching Nathan Fielder, and Elliot sits down for the television event of our lifetime (or so he says). Catch up with us, as we go through what we've been doing, watching, and most importantly, feeling. Enjoy!
She's funny, she's smart, she's a local gal, McGill educated, Second City trained, she sings and writes and acts: the wonderful Ashley Botting. This week we sit down to talk about her start in the Toronto improv scene, her days in the writer's room at shows like CBC's Because News, her experience directing at Second City, and most importantly, her role as Delivery Debbie on the Emmie Award winning show, Odd Squad. We also get her to recommend her favourite Toronto comedy bars, cocktail bars, and icecream parlours. Enjoy!
86. PKL's 10 Essentials

86. PKL's 10 Essentials

2022-08-1901:12:16

From dry shampoo to fruit, we sit down this week to talk about our 10 non-essential essentials. Inspired by the GQ Essentials series, we tell you the brands (and general items) we can't live without. It's not food, it's not water, it's the little things that make our day-to-days better. Enjoy!
This week: Elliot gets challenged by a pool shark, Elise reunites with high school friends, Kate decides the only way to properly grieve the loss of a loved one is to sit shiva. We also take a deep dive into our PKL newsletter Freespaces and give you a behind the scenes look at how we put together the newsletter, and the journey we’ve taken from the initial concept to where the newsletter is today. Keep your eyes peeled for physical copies for sale, coming soon! Enjoy!
We're halfway through the year folks, and we thought it was a good time to sit down and check in with where we're at. Are we meeting our goals, is the second half of the year looking good, and most importantly, is Elise drinking enough water? Parking Lot is coming to you, once again, on Zoom, recovering from Covid. Turn down your volume because our excitement levels are hard to contain this week. Enjoy!
This week we come to you from isolation, on Zoom. We’ve been hit by the virus, we’ve been taken down by illness. And what better way to get through Covid than by watching Elise’s favourite childhood movie, Stuart Little. The story of one mouse boy who joins the Little family, and is quickly facing off with his enemy, Snow Bell, dressing in clothes from a doll named Ben, and driving around Central Park in a sick whip. We had a great time, we think you will too.
79. A Casual Catch Up

79. A Casual Catch Up

2022-06-2452:32

This week we're catching up and keeping it loose. Elise and Elliot went to New York and got into a random man's car at the airport and then just hoped for the best. Maggie is getting published in indy magazines. Kate went to a fancy gathering. The life of the emerging artist is extremely glamorous and we're here to deliver.
77. PKL's Greatest Fears

77. PKL's Greatest Fears

2022-06-1001:09:04

Broken glass, riptides, ghosts, poverty, death. We cover it all, big and small, the fears that keep us up at night. For many, they fear the death of a loved one. For us, we fear planning the funeral. Some people have a fear of oversleeping, not us... we're scared of getting up early. It's another classic PKL episode, listen in, you're sure to find some common ground with us.
This week we sit down with the incredible Sadie Hunter to talk about how she got her start as a documentary film director, her time learning the ropes at Humber, her multiple film projects, and her company Anomaly Films. She’s a hustler, with a natural talent for organization and communication. Did Kate start taking notes so that she could be better at her job? Perhaps. Listen in, Sadie’s got the answers.
Here’s the update: Elise went to paint a man in a towel, Elliot is training to become a pool shark, Maggie booked a trip, Kate sat on a roof. This week we also dive into our main topic, which for all you Rooney lovers, is the new adaption of the novel Conversations with Friends. Our conversation — much like the show — is fast paced, filled with drama, and is extremely high stakes.
As we say goodbye to our studio at 401 Richmond, we say hello to the wizarding world's craziest villain: Dolores Umbridge. Elise had a lot of questions after watching this movie, so if you also have trouble keeping up with a children's movie, listen in, we're sure to answer all your questions. Enjoy!

What a week: Elise organizes a New York dinner for Kids in the Hall, Kate is abandoned in Newark, Maggie dislocates her arm in the middle of the night, Elliot places 54th in the Toronto Marathon 5k. Also around the 40 minute mark, we do start our discussion of our favourite foreign films, so hang in there! We promise, we do like subtitles, sometimes we even turn them on when we’re watching movies in English.
