Description

Pulot-an ng kwentong sosyolohikal!

The previous Pulot-an season primarily focused on introducing and laymanizing sociology. For this season, we will be revving things up by applying concepts from sociology to an issue that affects us all: TRAFFIC! And to make things more interesting, we will be incorporating in our discussions jeepneys—a unique icon in the Philippine traffic scene. For the last episode of this year’s Pulot-an, our discussion will look back on the history of the plight of our manong draybers, as well as their most current ordeal with the pandemic. In relation, we will once again hark back to the notions of C.W. Mills on our sociological imagination, and use this as our fuel in realizing our role as their pasaheros in fighting against unfair system changes, such as jeepney modernization.

And to make things more interesting, we will be incorporating in our discussions jeepneys—a unique icon in the Philippine traffic scene. Specifically, in this episode, our knowledge on symbolic interactionism will be put to test as we dissect in our discussion how jeepneys became a relevant part of the culture in the Philippines as well as in UP. We will discuss the symbolic meaning and relevance of this icon in our lives as local byaheros.
Specifically, in this episode, we will be stretching our sociological imagination by analyzing whether traffic is a private dilemma or a public issue. We will dissect the ways with which traffic affects our everyday lives, as well as how our ‘private’ choices affect the country’s traffic situation.
In the last episode of Pulot-an, our ka-kwentuhans Dr. Augustus Añonuevo and Prof. Athenee Mercado will be examining classical and contemporary sociological theories. Rather than an in-depth and jargonized study of these theories, the similarities and highlights of these theories, as well as the context these theories were formulated in will be reviewed. The podcast will end with a discussion on how sociological theories should be treated.
Every discipline has its own foundations, sociology included. Our ka-kwentuhans, Prof. Mark Oliver Llangco and Prof. Prince Kennex Aldama will tackle the history and frameworks of sociology. The development of the sociological discipline and how it changed over the years will be addressed. This episode will also discuss the major sociological paradigm, specifically each paradigm’s main proponents, basic precepts, and influence on the discipline of sociology.
Sociology is an unfamiliar discipline to many and is often misunderstood. The pilot episode of Pulot-an will introduce sociology as a discipline to the general public. Our ka-kwentuhan Prof. Mary Diane Duran will define the discipline of sociology and explain the scope of the discipline. Misconceptions attached to the discipline will be tackled. The skills sociologists need, such as the sociological imagination, and the different fields of study under sociology will also be discussed.
