Visual Poem CLICK here https://youtube.com/channel/UCeID7sKpBGDakoHGlxBBXewAlthough I do have a great relationship with my biological father now, the poem, "Black Girl" is a 100% true story of my experience growing up. The poem takes you on a journey of a young girl who is trying to fill a void by fitting in. Unaware of where her pain is rooted, she bounces from crowd to crowd just to feel validated, accepted and loved. Only to find that no matter where she goes, she experiences rejection. As a woman, now realizing the beauty in her uniqueness, she's determined not to pass on a cycle of low self-esteem to her daughter. The ultimate cycle however is rooted in the absence of her father. My mother was a single mom most of my childhood. She had me at age 19, her mom had her at age 20 and I had my daughter a month before I turned 19. None of us graduated from college and eventually became single mothers. I'm hopeful that my daughter will raise the bar and not settle for less than what she's worth. Understanding that she's worth more than precious diamonds, she will love herself instead of thirsting for love and settling for whatever comes. I hope this poem inspires not only black girls but for black families to break unhealthy cycles.
