Deb shares her journey through challenges when life gets dirty and how plants and trees have provided a place for reflection and healing. A visit to a retail plant nursery inspired her to seek horticulture as a career. By the age of twenty-two, she had founded an interior plant business that she managed for the next four decades. These forty years of service to her community provided ample opportunities to cultivate connections with people and plants. Deb’s passion for teaching sprouted when her young son Kris asked her to visit his class and make their botany lesson come to life. Her persona as Miss Daisy was born, and she continues to share her fascination with nature with children in outdoor classrooms. Her favorite place to teach is under the canopies of trees. Deb has created and instructed several horticulture classes on a college level and became a seasoned trainer in the plant industry. In addition, as a Master Gardener, she has presented educational presentations to the general public on various plant topics. Over the years, Deb found the methods she used as a gardener to help plants thrive could be metaphors for growth in our inner gardens. Dr. Lynn shares her life struggles with money believing she could always make more of it. One day that all changed. She can out of the ashes and now teaches others how they can too. About my Guest My guest today is Lynn Carrillo, who has earned many titles over her life. Lynn is a Passionate Agent w/ New York Life helping individuals and business owners maximize their benefits and prepare for retirement. She is a mom, a sister, a daughter, a wife, and a business owner, but it was when she became a widow that her life took a downturn she never saw coming. Lynn thought there was always time—time to save, time to prepare. It was the sudden death of her husband at the age of forty-one that not only destroyed her mentally and physically but also financially. Without warning, Lynn had to shift from the comforts of being in a dual-income family to the hard hustle of being a single mom with a grieving teenage son, all without a financial parachute. Lynn couldn’t find decent work and was forced to survive on the scraps thrown to her by the welfare system. Selling everything they owned just to keep a roof over their heads, with only two weeks left before they faced eviction and just steps away from living in their car, hope finally arrived. Lynn was offered a position with a promising company, but there was a catch. This life raft was out of state away from everything and everyone she knew. This choice would force her to be completely on her own. Her story is about what happens when you are not prepared and the traumas you face if you choose to live life paycheck to paycheck.
