Episode 91: Chernobyl

2024-03-3001:06:41

In 1986, the world was shocked by the explosion of a reactor core at Chernobyl; a nuclear power plant. But the world was mostly in the dark as Russian government attempted to cover up the Ukrainian disaster. The denial would lead to disastrous consequences for the citizens and one of the most famous criminal cases of negligence.
In 2013, a man who went boating goes missing. As the search goes on, the boat is found but not a body. The question becomes where is Pat Mullins and what happened to him?
The abduction of Jan Broberg warns everyone that you may never truly know what someone is capable of; even a best friend. A close friend of the Broberg family, Robert Berchtold is a seemingly normal guy with a loving wife and five daughters of his own. But he soon becomes obsessed with the Broberg's oldest daughter, Jan. Jan is only twelve years old when she is kidnapped but her story gets stranger as she is taken not once, but twice.
As the years go by, a new suspect and new thread of murders begin to be revealed. But is it the same killer from the 70s murders? The police start to finally make connections between the murders and a survivor's story helps make a break.
In 1984 a body is found on Calder Road in Galveston, Texas. Originally thought to be one murder becomes multiple as more bodies in the same area continue to be found. The open, non residential land is known as 'The Killing Fields'. The murders trace all the way back to 1971 as the hunt for a new serial killer begins.
Darya Nikolayevna Saltykova was a noblewoman of Russia who lived in the 1700s. She had everything she could want, money, land and power. But Darya liked to abuse her power over her serfs so much so that she would later be called 'The Tormentor'. Her brutal treatment of her serfs gained attention from the Empress herself, Catherine The Great. This case became a turning stone of the new 'Enlightened Russia' for nobles under Catherine The Great's rule.
We are back for a new season!  This week Emily and guest cohost Cathrine talk about the fall of NFL star Aaron Hernandez. The Patriots player was accused of murder in 2013 which led to discovering a mysterious double murder in 2012.

Episode 84: Rostov Ripper

Episode 84: Rostov Ripper

2023-07-3001:04:44

The case of the Rostov Ripper was a groundbreaking and historic case that happened in the 70s and 80s. The Rostov Ripper is to this day Russia/ Ukraine's most prolific serial killer. So why is his name not widely known elsewhere? The politics, beliefs and lack of media/investigation training in the Soviet Union play a large part in this case and why it is so important to criminal history along with the brutal nature of the murders.
We conclude our Jack the Ripper case by going through some of the top suspects. Of the 80 arrests and many, many theories, some had merit and some ridiculous. There is a possible connection between American serial killer H.H. Holmes and an outrageous idea the author of 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' was involved among the suspects.
In part 3 of Jack the Ripper, we talk about the traumatic and devastating death of Mary Kelly, the final victim. However, the Whitechapel Murders does not end with her and there were other strange deaths that were suspected Ripper kills.
In part two of 'Jack the Ripper' we talk more about the mysterious letters that were sent to the police and reporters of the time. The letters were signed Jack the Ripper but there is debate if they were truly from the murderer. The number of murders grows leading to a strange and unlikely double homicide.
One of the most famous serial killers of all time is also one of the most elusive and mysterious: Jack the Ripper. In 1888, a series of murders and horrible mutilations of women were committed by a killer who liked the spotlight yet was never found. In part one of case, we detail the early attacks and murders from the case files on 'The Whitechapel Murders'.
In part 2 of 'The Yorkshire Ripper', the police finally make their first arrest in the five years the case has been going on. The public fights back and the entire basis and criminal profile of the killer is flipped on its head before the case comes to a close.
This week we travel back to the 70s to talk about one of England's most notorious and frightening killers: The Yorkshire Ripper. Over the next few weeks, we are going to cover the cases of killers who have been deemed 'rippers' and what exactly that means. We start not with the original ripper, Jack the Ripper, but with the killer who fashioned himself after Jack in the modern day.
In the final episode of our macabre animals series, Kasey tells us what the ten most deadly animals are and what makes them deadly to humans. Emily then gives facts about one of the most deadly animal attacks in history and some unlikely deadly animals.
This week Kasey tells the strange story of two lions called 'Ghost in the Darkness'. In 1898, while the British were trying to build a bridge for a new railroad in Tsavo, two man eating lions terrorized the workers. Lt. Colonel John Henry Patterson leads the search for the  lions and scientists over a hundred years later are still trying to find clues to their unnatural behavior.
Our first episode in the new series 'Killer/Strange Animals' focuses on the weird story of the 'Cocaine Bear'. The case of this drug run gone wrong that happened in the 80s inspired the events of the new horror/comedy film 'Cocaine Bear' that just came out. We talk about what happened on this drug run, how a bear became involved and how the true story compares to the wild film.  *Episodes will now be released on Fridays!*
In 2013, a hitchhiker named Kai became an unlikely hero to a woman under attack. Kai's interview after the incident made him an overnight sensation; going viral and becoming a lovable carefree spirit. But as the world became more obsessed with Kai, those closest began to think he was not what he seems and was dangerous. And then Kai gets involved in a murder case but not as a hero, as a suspect.
In 2018, a sleeping bag with human remains in it was found on the side of an interstate. David Carter was murdered and left behind by his girlfriend Tamera Williams. Despite the evidence against her, Tamera had a way of dodging police.

FYI, a life sentence is 40 years, so most criminals are subject to get out during their lifetime, and sometimes even early for good behavior. Hence some very bad characters getting multiple life sentences or "without parole" tacked on, so that they never see the light of day!!

Just a random comment about "life" in prison. In most states, "life" is 40 years, so unless you get "life without the possibility of parole," at the 40-year mark, you are free to go. So if you commit a crime at age 20, you're out at age 60. That's why often when a particularly horrific crime occurs or when someone is a habitual or a serial offender, a judge will often sentence them to larger number of years such as 108 years or something irrational where they can't possibly live that long to reach a parole opportunity.

I found this on the web page for the National Conference of State Legislatures; "the primary method of execution is lethal injection but if the accused chooses" and often puts in writing, there are some states that will let them choose a secondary method. Here are the secondary methods they can choose from. "Secondary methods of execution include electrocution, lethal gas, hanging, nitrogen hypoxia, and firing squad."

This is what I found on Bill Carns, the 29 year old who was shot, "The attack on the night of Aug. 25, 1985, permanently paralyzed Carns on his left side and marked his forehead and neck with gunshot scars. His left arm is in a sling, his left leg in a brace. He can no longer run. A bullet remains lodged in his skull. He and his girlfriend eventually broke up, both unable to handle the aftermath of the ordeal. It took years of treatment for Carns to retrain his once-sharp brain and muscular body."
