Many in HR exhibit an overly optimistic "this is fine" attitude about AI. But the reality is, AI is already transforming HR workflows and reducing headcounts. In this episode, we discuss why passive optimism could doom the future of work. Just as past economic shifts brought immense social upheaval, the rise of AI promises to radically reshape the workforce. The difference is, these AI shifts are happening at breakneck speed compared to history. This urgency requires proactive governance to navigate AI's impact on jobs. We can't casually expect that things will work out fine without deliberate effort to shape a positive future. Drawing on historical lessons, we explore practical ways HR professionals can lean in to steer towards an ethical, humane AI-powered world of work. The time is now to awaken from passive optimism and guide the way forward.
Folks, I'll admit - I can sometimes get a little carried away jumping on the latest HR tech hype train. And AI has been hyped up immensely as a silver bullet to transform our field. But recently, I took a step back to dive deeper into the EU's proposed Artificial Intelligence Act and its implications. This sweeping legislation aims to pass by end of 2023 and regulate how companies can deploy AI. The EU recognizes dangers of unfettered AI in high-stakes HR areas like hiring and performance reviews. Their framework mandates transparency, testing for bias, and human oversight of AI decisions. Responsible AI governance presents challenges. But it's also a chance to embed ethics into the foundations of HR technology. Yes, AI hype still outpaces reality. As leaders, we must ensure algorithms uplift work for all - not undermine human dignity. I’m optimistic about AI’s potential, but sober about the risks. Let’s keep discussing how HR can responsibly shape an intelligent yet human future of work.

In this episode, I discuss how ChatGPT may fade as companies integrate generative AI directly into existing tools like LinkedIn Recruiter and Google Workspace. With AI capabilities built into workflows, the friction of switching to ChatGPT diminishes. Though it offers robust conversation, platforms like LinkedIn can match these skills over time with massive datasets. I remain optimistic about AI's future, but believe it will live within our everyday platforms, not as a separate app. I also share insights from my new course and upcoming conference talk on elevating HR with generative AI.
