In this episode of the Health and Wealth podcast, hosted by Carter and Tim, they welcome Brion Crum, the VP of Wealth Development at Caliber Funds, to discuss his journey and experience in the financial services industry. Carter shares how he met Brion at an alliance campaign and attended a round table discussion with him, and they have been discussing having him on the podcast ever since. Brion talks about how growing up on a farm in Ohio and watching his father's entrepreneurship made him realize the value of business ownership and investing in real estate. This realization drove him to pursue a career in financial services, and he currently works for Caliber Funds and Caliber Companies.Brion also shares about the history of Caliber, which started in 2009 to help people access real estate deals during the last great recession. He explains that Caliber buys distressed properties, renovates them, and distributes income to investors. In 2014, they were able to take advantage of the Jobs Act, which allowed equity crowdfunding to occur. Brion explains that they had to make sure that all investors were accredited, meaning they had a net worth over a million dollars or an income exceeding $300,000 as a couple or $200,000 as an individual. They also discuss the Opportunities Zone Fund program, which is designed to encourage investment in economically disadvantaged areas in the US. Investors who have a capital gain can invest it in a qualified opportunity zone fund, which provides them with tax benefits such as deferring owing any federal capital gains tax for several years. Caliber invests in real estate, particularly in Arizona, Colorado, and Texas. The company has a vertically integrated and diversified real estate asset management system and raises most of its capital through Caliber Funds. Brion also talks about how financial advisors can work with Caliber and the benefits of doing so.Brion Crum is the VP of Wealth Development at Caliber Funds. His responsibilities include raising money for Caliber’s multiple real estate funds and helping accredited investors develop their wealth.Prior to Caliber, Brion was a financial advisor at Merrill Lynch and Synergy Investments, advising high-net-worth investors and business owners on strategies for asset protection, tax planning and portfolio construction.
