Did you think shining bright was just about drawing attention to yourself? Let's change that channel right now. You have a purpose and when you live it unapologetically, the light you shine in service to others also lights up the career paths of other creatives who want to make a difference. Normalize success, knowing that anything you leave behind is in exchange or something so much greater. Fear of failure put a ceiling on your potential, keeping your light dim. When will the discomfort of being where you are today outweigh the comfort of the familiar? Oh yay- you accomplished something big! How fast can you stick a pin in that bubble to burst it? Collectively, we are so focused on what we haven't done (yet) that we forget to celebrate our wins and those of others. Here's why that's super bad to do. Every accomplishment deserves to be celebrated. By recognizing what's special and savoring it, you uplevel your point of view and can see even more ways to change the world while living your best life. Instead of worrying about whether you are worthy of a recognition, see it as a starting point not a destination. You now have agency to make an even greater impact. Don't fall prey to future tripping where you minimize what you did today. People who always hinge their happiness on the condition of a what they haven't done instead of what they have are on a hella future trip where success is never achievable. Make sure to clap up others for their wins. Help them see what's now possible instead of minimizing what they've done. You're not the same person after a win- you're a better and stronger one. Never let anyone shame you into thinking that you have a big ego because you upleveled. World changers don't have time to stay in their comfort zone. Steffi Reyes-Thomas shares how she embarked on a path of climate advocacy and holistic design that has pushed her past what she thought she would ever be able to do. Ask and educate- be willing to take a stand and call out the issues others may either not be aware of or not know that have the power to change. Find a community - the support as well as ways to collaborate, innovate and practice will 10x anything you will ever do on your own. Be willing to make yourself uncomfortable or you will never be motivated to take the big risks you need to to make the difference you feel called to make. Put yourself in a space to move past what you believe you can do. Space creates a precedent for living and we create space. Host a climate cafe and gain empathy for how others feel on the issue. look to unite not fight and foster empowerment and collaboration. Help people see that climate change isn't about big entities and government agencies, but about the actions they take every day. Stress is your body's danger response. Too bad your body doesn't know the difference between physical danger and being emotionally triggered by experiences that dredge up past traumas. Good thing there is a technique out there that let's you remodel the stress triggers in your body and mind. My guest Kelly Howe discusses why we experience stress and how to release it using Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) aka tapping. We don't always recognize the low level stressors that keep us in a chronic state of stress. Stress not only leads to physical and mental disease, but it shuts down rational thinking and creativity. EFT or tapping stimulates acupressure points while voicing psychological prompts to release past traumas. It creates a sense of safety for the body which then can turn off the stress response. It clears stress when you encounter a triggering event, and also clears the root cause trauma issues associated with the trigger. Traumas keep stress activated and leak our energy. EFT unplugs those energy vampires so you feel good more often. Architecture school taught you how to design buildings not how to not how to survive, grow, or lead in your career. In this episode of Architecting, AEC Industry recruiter Bryce Batts calls out the rules that quietly keep you small and compliant. This isn’t about chasing the next job. It’s about designing your career on purpose — with clarity, self‑advocacy, and connections that actually move the needle. Architects without personal career clarity get overlooked — even when they’re highly skilled Every architect who advances has a sponsor, not just a mentor. Sponsors can see your potential within the firm and advocate for you to get opportunities. Your career requires constant recallibration in order to be aligned with what you want to achieve at any given point in your life. Keep the receipts of accomplishments and positive reviews- they give you confidence about your strengths, proof of what you have accomplished and reveal patterns around what you truly value. Feeling like no one is giving you your 10's?  In this episode, I explore how to escape the protect/defend/prove trap so many of us can fall into when we feel unseen or unfairly criticized. Rather than worrying about adversaries, use these steps to own your own path and find those who authentically resonate with you. Worrying about what others think of you is a waste of time and energy that keeps you vulnerable and stuck with the impossible task of pleasing everyone. You are not for everyone. Full stop. Give yourself permission to follow the career path that resonates with you. Say yes to aligned opportunities, and adopt a "no matter what" stance in pursuing them. Other people are not your responsibility. Act in integrity and give others the grace to follow their own paths.   💡Give Architecting a Google review- be sure to name the episode! https://g.page/r/CVYGVmEtsUjdEAI/review Stay Inspired, Angela Join the architecting community: YouTube, Instagram,  LinkedIn, Clubhouse, Facebook Interested in sponsoring a show or having me as a guest on your podcast or community? In this economy, you should just work hard and serve the hell out of your customers, right? If you want to get burned out and taken advantage of sure.  But there is a better way. My guest Daniel McCaulley shares his thoughts on building a company around a growth mindset. Professional development is any way you are improving, whether that is technical competency or soft skills. Know who you are, who your company is and who you are trying to serve (not just who is your client). Client relationships can be a lot like dating, you can't settle when it's not a good match. It's important to know your clients and colleagues outside of projects. Challenge yourself to do something outside of your comfort zone every day. You have the potential for greatness...too bad you're too distracted to act on it. My guest Steven Puri decided that it was time more people tapped into their creativity in a high performing low stress way. He should know, his background in engineering, entrpreneurship and Hollywood films has led him to see firsthand what stokes creative fires vs. what is a painful grind. Listen in to learn more. We all have something great inside of us. The question is whether you are going to get it out or not. The one thing even a billionaire can't get more of is time- stop squandering yours with tasks or processes that are out of integrity. Hustle culture pulls us out of flow state. Having more than one project going on at a time increases the likelihood you will explore the adjacent possible. Designate a place for creativity and tune your mind to be in flow state there. IRL > URL every time. Living in a digital world  designed to reward our "engagement" has led to a reduction in attention span, memory and concentration. If you're feeling  anxious, disinterested, restless and mentally exhausted, it's a symptom of popcorn brain. Time to stop doom scrolling and make the changes I discuss in this episode. In our "always on" digitally forward world, devices endlessly interrupt us with notifications triggering the reward systems in our brain and conditioning us to feel an urgent need to respond. Despite having access to an infinite amount of data, algorithms have narrowed our awareness and placed us in echo chambers that only affirm what we already know or worry about. Technology didn't give us more free time, it led to us taking on more work. Attention fatigue sets in when our mental resources are drained by constant interruptions. This makes us less available for tasks that require focused attention and more prone to rote activities that keep us engaged but not challenged - I'm looking at you doom scroller! Stop the pop by taking a digital detox, turning of notifications and prioritizing physical tasks. Doing IRL activities mindfully and engaging all five senses will help restore attention and focus. The hardest things to talk about are often the ones that most need our commitment. In this episode, we dive into one of architecture’s toughest (and most overdue) topics: how to make the profession more transparent, inclusive, and accessible. My guest, Roderic Walton, is on a mission to demystify what architects actually do—and to build a community where open discussion replaces gatekeeping. Through his YouTube channel, he’s redefining how we talk about architecture, who gets to be part of it, and how to create a career that truly makes an impact. If you’ve ever questioned your place in the profession—or wanted to change it for the better—this conversation is for you.  It takes time to forge a career path but what makes your career is the changes you can make for others through your work. Hearing and giving voice to a broader community makes your work more relevant and impactful. Overcoming negativity and setbacks comes from clarity around why your work is important. Part of why our profession isn't getting more diverse is that we don;t have diverse design processes. Watch the R.K.W. It’s easy to forget who we’re really designing for—especially in behavioral health, where the stakes are high and the people we serve are too often left out of the process. In this episode, Parker LaCombe and Sydney Harris of Mind Care Connect reveal how co-design that engages those with lived experience is rewriting the rules of behavioral health architecture. Co-design isn’t just a process—it’s a mindset shift. When architects design with people, not for them, we build dignity, community, and true healing into the spaces that need it most. Design can either amplify power dynamics or become an equalizer. Including people with lived experience prevents assumptions and creates more balanced, empathetic spaces. Co-design is a feedback loop, not a one-time input. Maintaining communication ensures participants know how their voices shaped the outcome—even when every request can’t be met. Designing for recovery is important in behavioral health spaces. This means providing connection and community where someone feels safe to be vulnerable. It isn't about designing for compliance.  Work with Mind Care Connect: https://www.mindcareconnect.org Contact Parker: https://www.linkedin.com/in/parker-lacombe/ Contact Sydney: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sydney-h-6a3a3a61/ 💡Give Architecting a Google review- be sure to name the episode! https://g.page/r/CVYGVmEtsUjdEAI/review Stay Inspired, Angela Join the architecting community: YouTube, Instagram,  LinkedIn, Clubhouse, Facebook Interested in sponsoring a show or having me as a guest on your podcast or community? What if the setback you’re cursing right now is the exact detour you needed? In this episode of Architecting, I flip the script on failure. When the universe pulls the rug out, it’s not rejection—it’s redirection. Learn how to take the opportunity to rebrand, define success on your own terms, and stop tolerating what never served you. This is your permission slip to rethink what you’ve been settling for and reclaim your career as something that actually fits. What you thought you wanted might not be aligned with your actually purpose, which may be what's blocking you from making the moves that would bring it in.  Look for the "something better." Sometimes we need the experience of what we don't like or want to better understand what we do. Look for hidden takeaways from setbacks such as soft skills gained, or experience in areas that might seem like they are tangential to your main job.  Look retrospectively for how these things differentiate you in a way that showcases your authentic self. Your next opportunity shouldn’t be a “bounce back” but a bold pivot forward 💡Give Architecting a Google review- be sure to name the episode! https://g.page/r/CVYGVmEtsUjdEAI/review Stay Inspired, Angela Join the architecting community: YouTube, Instagram,  LinkedIn, Clubhouse, Facebook Interested in sponsoring a show or having me as a guest on your podcast or community? If you don’t ask, the answer’s always no. If you don’t knock, the door never opens. Opportunity doesn’t wait around—it rewards bold action. In part two of a special "double feature" podcast episode, you'll hear from Caitlin Brady, creator of the Architectette podcast (where part one lives) about chasing the chances that can change everything. We talk about what it really means to pursue opportunity—not as luck or timing, but as a habit. The magic isn’t in the wins alone; it’s in the courage to keep showing up, asking, and learning from every move you make. Build real relationships instead of transactional ones. Don't just work with people, take the time to get to know them and learn from them. Always ask, but don't get attached to the outcome. What's meant for you will find you if you keep taking action. Then, picking up where part one left off (at 19:50), we get real about leadership as the antidote to systemic codependency in the AEC industry: Respect boundaries—yours and your team’s. Set expectations that empower, not deplete. Refuse to normalize burnout or abuse. Give agency, celebrate wins, and build momentum through trust. ICYMI, the world, and every system in it, is in a state of upheaval. That can feel scary...or like an opportunity. The people who make real impact don’t wait for permission, they trust their gut, take the risks others are afraid of, and pivot fast when things change. In this episode, you'll hear from one of them. Doug King shares his template for identifying as the expert you want to be. Bet on your intuition to take the right risks. Double down by adapting and changing with circumstances as they unfold. Cross-pollinate your passions—even the ones that don’t “belong” in your profession—and use them to disrupt the status quo. . What pretzel are you twisting yourself into just to look successful? And what’s that “success” really costing you? For so many of us, the chase isn’t about achievement — it’s about negotiating for acceptance. Let’s be real: if you’re chasing someone else’s version of success, you’re not building a life — you’re auditioning for one. Forever the Pick Me. ✨ In this episode, I unpack: Why chasing the “That Girl” version of success sabotages your confidence and makes you feel like an imposter when you do score a win. How authenticity and self-worth create real opportunities and flow Why nurturing your unique strengths is the fastest path to growth The freedom and fulfillment of embracing who you actually are The get-rich-quick strategy isn’t hustling harder — it’s owning your strengths, finding your people, and working in alignment. Instead of failing at being “That Girl” (and resenting those who are), this is your permission slip to thrive as This Girl. The one nobody can copy, water down, or ignore. 🎙️ Tune in and learn how to stop people-pleasing, overcome imposter syndrome, and finally define success on your own terms.   💡 Download The Perfectionist Trap Guide: architectingpodcast.com/perfectionismtrap 💡Give Architecting a Google review- be sure to name the episode! https://g.page/r/CVYGVmEtsUjdEAI/review Stay Inspired, Angela Join the architecting community: YouTube, Instagram,  LinkedIn, Clubhouse, Facebook Interested in sponsoring a show or having me as a guest on your podcast or community? As an architect, nothing feels better than knowing a space you designed brought someone joy, or peace. But it's not easy to tap into that zone when you aren't making space for any of that in your own life.  In this episode, you'll hear from architect Peter Sandiford how he stopped going against the grain and started working with his instincts, energy levels and the environment to uplevel his practice. People sense when a building flows, with the rhythms of the environment by being sustainable and resilient, with the culture by respecting the vernacular, and with their own energy using feng shui principles. Happy architects make happy buildings. Work life integration requires that you respect your time and energy first.  Find the work style that works for you and you'll stop struggling to be successful. It's all about energy, and if you're an introvert, you aren't getting it by peopling. Not that you're misanthropic.  You just need to be very discerning about what and who gets your precious energy and build in recovery time. Deep dive with me into this topic Introverts are not incompetent extroverts, you have a whole different style of interfacing with the world that gets corrupted when you are expected to wear the mask of an extrovert. Introverts are empathetic and passionate people. You care about the people and causes they resonate with and commit to them unflinchingly. Because introverts expend energy from interacting with others, you selectively invest it in alignment with your passions. Introverts can see the patterns, connect the dots, and convene the right resources because you take the time to process - trust your instincts It's essential to rest and restore in order to be able to function best when interacting with others. Self care helps you exhibit your strengths not your weaknesses. 💡 Download The Perfectionist Trap Guide: architectingpodcast.com/perfectionismtrap   Stay Inspired, Angela Join the architecting community: YouTube, Instagram,  LinkedIn, Clubhouse, Facebook Interested in sponsoring a show or having me as a guest on your podcast or community?
